Tasted by tekaldas on 3/23/2024 & rated 88 points: I tried this last November while visiting Bordeaux. The producer had a representative offering the wine for tasting and they were running a discount, unsurprising in light of the reputation of the 2013 vintage (worst in the past decade). It was my first time trying Sociando Mallet and I was impressed how well they did under the challenging circumstances. This is not a profound wine, but it was pleasant and had decent concentration. Their performance with the 2013 got me curious about how well they could do in a good year. I tried the 2015 a month later at a wine bar in Rabat and it was delicious. If you see this for under 30 euros/dollars as I saw it, it's worth picking up for a midweek claret with decent maturity and weight. (496 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 11/23/2023 & rated 87 points: Part of a 2020-1995 Verticale. Expectedly edgy and lacking substance. Considering the awful conditions of the vintage don't expect much improvement with time. (707 views)
Tasted by michael@tastingsbymichael.com on 7/15/2023 & rated 89 points: We tasted the 2013 Sociando Mallet from a Magnum bottle. Ruby color. Red cherry, some smoky note, Cigar box. On the palate, it is dry, medium acidity, with firm but silky tannins. Medium long finish. Nice Bordeaux, unlikely to develop more, but will still be at a good level for a while. (1144 views)
Tasted by michigan66 on 5/8/2023 & rated 94 points: fruity and dense smell.
dark ruby color in the glass.
long and full taste with notes from blueberry, vanilla and some wood.
a great QPR (1344 views)
Tasted by egoya on 4/1/2023 & rated 89 points: Yes, 2013 is not a good vintage and yes, almost all other vintages of Sociando are better. Nonetheless, although being quite lean this wine showed some elegance and was surprisingly enjoyable (1417 views)
Tasted by daghaug on 1/2/2023: Plommer og kirsebær på duft, litt på den varme sida. Samme i munnen, og med en litt kantete syrepg noe grønn stilk. Ikke en super opplevelse dette, men lar seg drIkke. (1366 views)
Tasted by aero on 8/21/2022: Medium bodied, traditional styling. Have tasted most Sociando vintages since early 2000s, this is the weakest by landslide.

Night 1: Correct nose, but palate tastes over the hill like 25+ years instead of the youth it is. Poor concentration. Limp red fruit, charred cedar, old paperbacks, brick dust, hints of green vegetative tones. After a few hours it turns completely to beautiful smelling reduction (animal skins, lanolin, iron), and the wine changes after that gaining more body and length but still not too satisfying. 86-87

Night 2: Used compressor vacuum overnight, and today the wine is open. It's just pretty similar to a random mid-90s cheap bottle of Bordeaux: red fruit, a little wood, but thin and green. Visibly it looks watered down, not light bodied like a Pinot - the edges are clear like water.

At $25 USD in 2022 this is a poor value. Wish it wasn't so, the 2014 is drinking so well right now. (1742 views)
Tasted by OW_SOSPEL on 7/21/2022 & rated 87 points: Vin limpide, brillant. 87. (1431 views)
Tasted by Brentw1 on 3/12/2022 & rated 82 points: It’s not terrible but drink it up folks. I got a mail shot from The Wine Society (UK) this week and it had one of their handy vintage guides. They rated 2013 as a four out of ten. I’d forgotten what a crappy vintage it was.

Nondescript probably sums it up and the other four bottles will not be around for long. Might even give a couple away. (1625 views)
Tasted by El_Toro on 1/21/2022 & rated 91 points: This wine is starting to become an enjoyable wine. It is still very reductive and takes time until it opens (the next day it was much more expressive). It will take another 5 years or more to evolve. I know why I love Bordeaux. (1583 views)
Tasted by willmark on 10/25/2021 & rated 80 points: 22 oct 2021 - seems past its peak…will need to consume the rest of the case sooner rather than later.. (1632 views)
Tasted by drboehm on 2/12/2021 & rated 86 points: Decanted for 1,5h . Dark red colour . Nose is a little defensive at the moment , but uniform . Taste is ok , but also nice and uniform ( BDX , left bank , Sociando ?? ) . Smooth , cassis , low tannics ...
Sorry thats not my style ! All guys how like a "Susi-wine" could buy and drink it .
I prefer the old style from Sociando , which is more earthy , typical northern left bank , tannic and animalic tones ect.
Drink now or when you ever like , or buy a 10€ wine from everywhere , it will be the same .
86 Points / 15,5 Points . (1999 views)
Tasted by Monsieur le Comte on 12/11/2020 & rated 91 points: rusty nail, raw meat, pencil shavings, minerality...
oaky perfume, vanilla, piment, plum, red berries, barnyard, cigar box...

good aftertaste but lacks body, medium bodied but chewy leather.
I really am a big fan of SM! Shitty year but a good classical St. Estephe witn nice minerality and a raw grace! (1932 views)
(1880 views)
Tasted by Brentw1 on 7/17/2020 & rated 82 points: I am a massive SM fan with bottles in the cellar from 2008 unbroken up to 2016 (and cases of the 2017 and 2018 purchased EP but not yet delivered).

2013 was a difficult year in Bordeaux and it shows in this offering from Jean G. It’s not terrible (and drink up if you have any as no upside for me) but it’s not the great wine that I associate with this cracking estate. I suppose the fact that I would consider cooking with it says It all about a wine that I paid over £20 a bottle for (scary, wide-eyes and shocked face emoji!) (1910 views)
Tasted by kim@meko.ru on 5/21/2020 & rated 85 points: Quite simple and not deserving any attention. Vanilla oak and alcohol attack prevails, plain both pnp and after 30’ in decanter. Simply buy something else)) (1773 views)
Tasted by ajeeja on 10/20/2018 & rated 91 points: Here I found a beautiful bottle with all the traits of a Médoc Bordeaux. Maybe not particularly complex, but a clear crowd pleaser. Great QPR. (2463 views)
(3553 views)
Tasted by GiorgosD on 10/19/2016 & rated 91 points: Sec, corsé et fruité (3340 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 4/23/2014 & rated 87 points: Spice, leaf, herb and red fruit in character, this is a light, user-friendly style of Sociando Mallet that will drink well early. 86-88 Pts (9190 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Haut-Médoc

Read more about Haut Medoc and its wines Long-standing fame The legally created division into Médoc and Haut-Médoc dates from 1935. But as long ago as 1815 a Chartrons broker, whose word carried weight, spoke of great red wines in the Haut-Médoc, so recognizing the high quality successfully achieved by this region's growers in the eighteenth century. The same Bordeaux broker revealed that the business world of the Chartrons and the great Bordeaux proprietors had established a sort of league-table of the parishes in which the vine-growing communes of today's Haut-Médoc appellation showed up well.

The Haut-Médoc appellation stretches over some thirty seven miles from north to south, from Saint-Seurin de Cadourne to Blanquefort. Within this area, certain zones produce wines exclusively with the Haut-Médoc appellation. It has terroirs of remarkable quality. And although we may note a certain predominance of layers of gravel (essentially Garonne gravel) from the Quaternary, all these sites are characterized by their wide diversity. Today in the southernmost communes of the appellation, the suburbs of Bordeaux, numerous vineyards which existed at the beginning of the twentieth century have disappeared, victims of urban expansion. But the vines live on... because man has retained his devotion to them.

The astonishing variety of different terroirs, the result of the very extent of the area, explains the diversity of Haut-Médoc wines, a fact which is rare within one and the same appellation.
But, over and above the differences, linked to this mosaic of climatic and geological influence, all these wines have the same family traits of character.
Alert and lively, full-bodied without being too powerful, and harmoniously balanced, they acquire a rare bouquet over the years.

In order to have the right to the Haut-Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Blanquefort, Le Taillan, Parempuyre, Le Pian, Ludon, Macau, Arsac, Labarde, Cantenac, Margaux, Avensan, Castelnau, Soussans, Arcins, Moulis, Listrac, Lamarque, Cussac, Saint-Laurent de Médoc, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac, Saint-Estèphe, Vertheuil, Saint-Seurin de Cadourne "excluding all the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (48 hectolitres per hectare).
