Tasted by Daniel / Michael on 7/25/2020 & rated 99 points: Amazing (760 views)
Tasted by rockguit on 3/11/2011 & rated 94 points: Beautiful nose (almost Bordeaux-like), as secondary characteristics of minerals and spice box have melded with the big fruit. Definite new-world palate of berries and plums, with a touch of vanilla and anise, yet very elegant and thoroughly integrated. Great balance and mouthfeel; I think this is smack dab in its drinking window. An amazing Napa cab, especially at this price point. (4817 views)
Tasted by phlegls on 1/9/2011 & rated 91 points: Drink Up (4772 views)
Tasted by NytOwl666 on 6/30/2010 & rated 93 points: Decanted and it really didn't need it. Wonderful fruit, mouth feel and finish. Only wish I'd bought more. (5096 views)
Tasted by djdaqm on 12/21/2009 & rated 93 points: High concentration and great round mouthfeel. Flavors of dark berries, and fruit forward with still life ahead of itself. Nice length. Good structure and balance. Nice QPR. Surprisingly impressed by the wine. I started to drink it with high expectations and it delivered. (5125 views)
Tasted by Hollowleg on 8/22/2009 & rated 94 points: Brought to a restaurant. Pop & pour, opened up quickly.
A lot more oak than I recall, but the fruit is strong enough to balance it out.
I'll try this again in six months. I'm thinking this is going to get even better. (4869 views)
Tasted by b2emarkets on 1/28/2009 & rated 92 points: Drinking well right now. Well integrated tannins with about 20-30 second finish. More elegant than most Napa cabs and more subtle. Truchard family is focused on high quality wines and this is a winner from a tough vintage. Hard pressed to find a cab this good at this price point. (2762 views)
Tasted by djdaqm on 1/13/2009 & rated 93 points: Decanted for about an hour before drinking. Strong and elegant nose with predominant notes of perfumed vanilla, clove, and leather. Beautiful balance on the nose. At this moment, it is clearly not a young wine, and it is starting to develop secondary nuances. Well concentrated wine, with tastes that include plum and licorice. This was a very well balance wine and had great complexity given the price. The tannins were not too strong, and I'd estimate this wine could continue towards it's peak in another 2 years, but it's drinking great now. Length was about 30 seconds. Overall a great wine, especially given the price. I think this was one of the best wines I've had in that price range. (2693 views)
Tasted by pkbackman on 7/25/2008 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured. Not great at first, but this wine got better over time. By the 2-hour mark this was smooth dark fruit and cedar box. It was an excellent wine, but there was no depth or excitement for me to make it outstanding. (2715 views)
Tasted by Hollowleg on 3/29/2008 & rated 93 points: One hour decant, big, in your face nose. Heavy in the mouth with a long finish. Not cognizant enough to describe in detail, but a block buster to say the least. YEAH! (3097 views)
Tasted by Paul Lin on 3/26/2008 & rated 92 points: Dinner at Foxtail. This was my first time with this producer and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised! Sweet aromas of raspberry puree, creme de cassis, red licorice, vanilla, and a hint of mint. On the palate, this very showy wine starts off a little candied with raspberry and strawberry jam, red currants, and dark cherries. After being open for about 2 hours, however, the sweetness calms down a bit and the wine picks up nice mineral and red clay notes. It does seem to lack a bit of weight and depth on the midpalate and toward the finish, but overall this is a sexy wine that actually went very well with my pappardelle in lamb ragout. (3073 views)
Tasted by gellie on 1/6/2008 & rated 95 points: this is a complete package, just perfect! (3566 views)
Tasted by Eck on 1/3/2008 & rated 93 points: Big, bold thick and delicious, this is what a Napa Cab should be (3497 views)
Tasted by beachnic on 3/22/2007 & rated 93 points: Again 93+pts..The nose is really comming out on this. Sexy Oak, excellent glycerine, Excellent concentration and finish. Like the Staglin it's an infant and will get much better. Best cab at this price point ($50) I can remember having in a long, long time. (3767 views)
Tasted by beachnic on 3/6/2007 & rated 93 points: 93+ pts..This is really starting to evolve beautifully. Earlier it was extremely smooth and balanced and concentrated but somewhat monoithic. Now the nose is starting to open up much more.. I'm getting menthol/mint like a Heitz cabernet and some vanilla and really nice berry notes. Getting much more structure as well, more chewey than before. Still great depth of fruit but much more flavor. Really nice Oak integrated into this and chocolate. Just alot more character(by an order of magnitude). This is turning into a really great cabernet. Like I said before patience with this will be rewarded. Wish I had more. Getting some WOW's on this tonight. Will hold the last bottle for another year and probably try the 2004 vintage as well. Give this a minimum of an hour to open up.

I had the 2003 Staglin the other night and this reminds me of it. I think the Staglin will be a great wine and better than this in several years but is only giving a glimpse of it's potential right now. Like the Staglin the John Anthony was very concentrated and smooth and closed down at first but showed signs of being very good with time. The Anthony has evolved quicker than I thought it would and has gone from good to great within a matter of months. I personally enjoyed this more than the 2002 Ch. Montelena Estate Cabernet. Great Value. (3726 views)
Tasted by WineForRob on 2/14/2007 & rated 91 points: Typical cab aromas of strong dark fruits. Very well balanced wine with very ripe fruit. Very fruity smooth finish with noticeable tannins. Very drinkable right now. (4212 views)
Tasted by beachnic on 12/12/2006 & rated 92 points: I'm tempted to bump this up to a 93 right now. This wine is so balanced that it could easily be overlooked as a quaffer but the chewiness and acidity kicks in after some airtime and balances the tremendous fruit out. Nice smokey oak at the end finally peaks through. This will get better with bottle age and probably could merit a a little higher score. The structure is there and hiding behind the fruit. It's very elegant and concentrated at the same time and the best is yet to come. Patience will be rewarded with this one. (3887 views)
Tasted by TechnoJohnny on 12/5/2006 & rated 90 points: The first time I tried this I thought it was great. This second time I didn't like it, it tasted like a cheap wine and had a bitter finish. It got a little better after 2 hours of air time but I still didn't like it. Maybe some bottle variation, I will try it again soon. The wife DID like it however... (4622 views)
Tasted by beachnic on 11/14/2006 & rated 92 points: 92+Pts..Elegant, Swellegant, Mellogant..did I say Elegant?.Initially Bordering on simple if not for a nice Kirsch note in the nose and above average sweetness and depth of fruit. With airtime this gets better showing some structure and Cabernet chewiness. Again smooth as smoke through a keyhole. This would go up a point with some extra nuances that may show up with a little bottle age. Sure to swoon the subtle/elegant crowd. Good match for Food.

Let this one breathe for at least an hour (No two) to bring out some character. Definately gets better with airtime..This is a Very pretty Cabernet. (3980 views)
Tasted by GolferChris on 10/19/2006 & rated 96 points: Wine Spectator Grand Tasting (Marriott Hotel, San Francisco, CA): My WOTN - 96 pts. $55. Tremendous value. Beautiful nose with red/black fruit, flowers, tobacco and sweet oak. Layered fruit and fine grained supple tannins. Great balance. Long, enticing finish. Grab a bottle you won't be disappointed. (11079 views)
Tasted by Yogi8938 on 7/19/2006 & rated 92 points: This wine shows great balance. Very enjoyable now, but will reward patience. My new favorite cab for under $50. (5291 views)

2003 John Anthony Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

2003 John Anthony Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon - John Anthony Truchard was raised in the family tradition of farming and worked hand in hand with his father Tony Truchard learning the wine business. It was during this time whre he learned to enjoy the hard work, dedication, and focus required to produce world class grapes that yield exceptional wines. In 1997 John began leasing and managing vineyard property wih the idea of one day producing a small quantity of high end wines. John's wife Michele shared his passion and together in 2003 they crushed what would become their first vintage of Cabernet and Syrah. The fruit that goes into the wines are sourced only from vineyards leased or managed by John. This level of viticultural control is the foundation for the wines produced. Alison Doran, also from a winemaking family, was selected as the winemaker for a number of reasons including her experience and tutelage under Andre Telescheff. Andre was Alison's mentor for 20 years helping her understand both the art and the science of making wine. She was the enologist at Lewis Cellars for several years before she began working with John Anthony in 2003.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
