Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 8 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 5/18/2021: Intense and linear with some brioche notes and power. (794 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 5/15/2021: A little electric green on the nose, and quick on the palate. With brilliant acidity. A bit of a candied character in there, really giving it flair. (676 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 3/23/2019: Salt and pickling spice on the nose. And pure and vibrant on the palate. Smoking acidity. Very long. (1014 views)
Tasted by fred o. on 1/26/2019 & rated 91 points: dark golden color. Nose intensely nutty, almost peppery; floral. Palate light/delicate, lemony with a lightly creamy richness. Surprising wine, could be polarizing especially with the nose but the palate was lovely, delicate and finessed (1033 views)
Tasted by ashikoh on 11/17/2018 & rated 86 points: Wine Group Jura Tasting (Easy Bistro): medium golden hue, slightly cloudy; dried apricot, asian pear, a bit of volatile acidity, a bit of Brett; medium body, brownish/oxidized apple fruit, medium+ acid, 12.5% ABV; a Rosenthal wine, release price $48 (947 views)
Tasted by Beerzebub on 6/7/2018: P&p (but saving half the bottle to try tomorrow); drinking well right away. Big, pungent aroma - honeyed sour orange, orchard fruit, lightly floral, spice/tobacco/leather/brandy oak barrel notes (somewhat surprising but it works), stony earth, and briny, slightly funky sea breeze/shells/sweat... tons of interest. Clearly oxidative, but not very overtly (not much full-on sherry/brown apple/nuts/etc.). Similar on the palate, citrus-driven but with lots else going on, with good tart acidity holding everything together, and nice salinity and stoniness. Tasty, highly characterful, complex, long, good stuff. Seems built to age, but fun to drink now too.

Day 2 (stored refrigerated in a half-bottle overnight and brought back up to roughly cellar temp): Less fruit, more roasty/smoky; still drinking well, with plenty of intensity and interest, tasty, but not quite as lively; I probably preferred it on day 1. (922 views)
Tasted by BarryPaulPrice on 4/17/2017 & rated 93 points: Absolutely fascinating, polarizing style that drew me in with some wood and oxidized fruit notes. This is a wine that takes some time to unfold and understand, but it's worth it. Those who strongly prefer fruit forward Chard, or only want their Chards as super crisp Chablis at the other end of the spectrum won't much like this, imo. This inhabits it's own ground and as such is fun and fascinating for an adventurous wine lover. (1276 views)

Michel Gahier

The Gahier family has been around since only 1525 and with 6.5 hectares in the village of Montigny-les-Arsures they are one of the more reputable names in the Jura.

Gahier harvests and vinifies his wines parcel by parcel. Each wine ultimately is derived exclusively from a single vineyard site. The whites are classic versions; a testament to the old traditions of the Jura where the whites are left in barrel without “topping up”. The viticulture is organic (although not “certified”). There is a period of cold maceration followed by a cuvaison of approximately one month with some pigeage done in the initial parts of the process. The wines, both white and red, are aged in old foudres and barrel and bottled without filtration.

Jura

A petite and relatively obscure wine region in eastern France, between Burgundy and the Swiss border. Its geographical isolation has helped it to remain a rare bastion of traditional winemaking techniques, and today it produces some of the most distinctive wines in the world. Reds from the Jura are often light-bodied, earthy, berried, and reminiscent of the village wines of Burgundy (though here they are made of local grapes like Poulsard and Trousseau). While Chardonnay features widely, the true specialty of the region is the Vin Jaune (“yellow wine”) made from the white Savagnin grape. Cloudy, difficult Vin Jaune is made only in the best vintages, and must be aged for at least six years before being released. As it ages under a layer of yeast, known locally as “voile,” the wine slowly oxidizes, leading to complex aromas and flavors that range from walnut skin to sultana to spices and truffles. Famously long lived it is always sold in dumpy 62 cl bottle - the wine lost in production having been taken by les anges.
