Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 140 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by EvoPeteMTL on 4/7/2024 & rated 92 points: Lots of reduction to begin with, but after 20 minutes the nose really came clean with lots of violets. Mouth has that typical olive brine, not much pepper and grip left. The nose is much nicer than it tastes I guess it’s explained in part by the weaker and colder vintage. Still a nice wine. (1821 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 3/31/2024: Tasted and it felt a bit tight, so double decanted about 90 minutes before serving. Then it was just gorgeous on the nose, with a floral component that permeated everything, from the red and dark fruit to the savory mineral tones, to the meaty and olive-y scents. A complex and very pretty nose. Palate is balanced, shows good density of flavor without excess of any sort, and is long and impactful. Without the detail there compared to the nose, but this is a lovely wine with many, many good years ahead of it. (1984 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 3/28/2024 & rated 92 points: Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Easter Edition 2024 (Asperg): Tasted blind blind. Not decanted at first. Gained more balance after a quick decant. Clear, deep ruby color. Deep, floral herbaceous and spicy nose with some weird pine notes.
On the palate despite a creamy texture fine, spicy, high acidity, only 12,5% abv. Nice grip, mellow tannin. Some warm, cooked fruit, some barn notes. Good length. Needs probably way more time. 92+ (1950 views)
Tasted by acyso on 3/17/2024 & rated 93 points: Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL): I liked this a hair more than the 2013 (which was all red fruit). This is a bit darker, so you get more richness and density on the palate. It's a wine that will last a few years more than the lighter 2013, but the plusher fruit hides the structure so this actually feels more accessible right now. (2586 views)
Tasted by Julien D on 3/9/2024 & rated 92 points: The nose is extremely beautiful and keeps unfurling. Notes of olive tapenade, blueberry, dark plum, potpourri and tobacco leaf. It’s such a nice perfume. Mouth is lean. Not flat or diluted, just lean. Still some bright acidity, tannins started to melt. Flavors of bell pepper, tomato leaf, red plum. Medium- finish (2038 views)
Tasted by MJReb on 1/18/2024 & rated 92 points: Needs some minutes in the glass to breathe: red fruit, mainly cherries, some red and black currant, a nice salinity, spices (white pepper) and some meaty notes. Pretty well together, open for business, but not afraid of the years to come. (2268 views)
Tasted by pclin on 11/23/2023 & rated 94 points: PnP. ABV 12.5%. One of rare occasions I drink alcohol these days. Beautiful bouquet soaring from glass on get-go. Fragrant and sweet with a touch of Vosne spices ( did I just say that?), could smell this for hours, damn I miss wines like this. Still think Gonon has the best nose of all Northern Rhone wines. Tannins partially resolved, fine and sweet tannins. Not showing lot of complexity though. A cooler vintage style of Gonon with excellent balance. Delicious now with years to go. (2482 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 11/17/2023 & rated 92 points: Loads of black pepper & florals, plenty of animale, and nice black & red fruits. Not overtly heavy, but enough power in the acid & rustic profile. Drinking well (2243 views)
Tasted by jviz on 10/23/2023 & rated 93 points: Houston Northern Rhone Blowout: The 14 overperforms again. It was the weakest in a flight of 09<13<10, but on its own, remains a fantastic bottle of syrah. Lighter in body than the others and more red fruited, it is somewhat classic and I wonder if it will make great old bones like many 98s and 01s have done? (3004 views)
Tasted by EricU on 10/17/2023 & rated 92 points: Mineral, olive, spice. We’ll balanced. Much less aromatic than the 2019 I recently had.

Paired well with bacon frisée and beef Bourgogne. (2351 views)
Tasted by sleepyhaus on 7/17/2023: Basically agree with Jvis's note below. Drinking well now. Probably not the vintage to go super long distance but should hold up well for another 5 years without issue and could surprise and go much longer. (2851 views)
Tasted by jviz on 2/26/2023 & rated 93 points: This wine shows how successful Gonon was in the context of the 2014 vintage. This wine was vibrant and exotic, with wild red and blue fruits. I was reminded of the comparative leanness of a 2014 Jamet tasted recently. This wine was far better. Polished and lithe. It’s really, really good now, but should remain in balance for further aging. (3572 views)
Tasted by billyloveswine on 2/14/2023 & rated 93 points: PnP’ed and consumed over 4 hours. Deep ruby, pronounced aromas of violet, lavender, herbs, black cherry, olive, warm spices, black pepper, forest floor, and cedar. Medium+ acidity, medium body that shows the cool vintage, medium+ smooth, fine-grained tannins, and a long, complex finish. This was ready-to-go from the initial pour, unlike the ‘15 opened on the same day which was still tight by the end of the night. (3365 views)
Tasted by cfk49 on 8/28/2022 & rated 95 points: Similar to my previous note. Just a stupendous bottle. Cellared since original release. (4161 views)
(4349 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/29/2022: A Small Celebration of a 98+ Year Life (Los Gatos, California): Opened 2 hours earlier. Ruby with outer rim fading. Forward aromas of black flowers, stems, and black fruit. Medium weight with leaner, earthy flavors and feel. Cranberry, green herbs, and a strong dollop of beefsteak tomato. This bottle had the typical intoxicating Gonon nose but a cooler presence on the palate that lacked the generosity and texture that I usually find in this producer's wines. Overall, very good and there could be further amelioration over the next few years. (4260 views)
Tasted by Mrbuzz on 7/25/2022 & rated 95 points: I really dig these "lighter" vintage wines like this one, and the likes of the 11 Allemand Reynard...they are more subtle and finessed, yet still posses their classic flavors and exotics. My 6th bottle from release, and the wine is really starting to blossom...WONDERFUL exotics of smoked cherry wood, olive tapenade, blood iron to go along with the silky smooth fresh crushed berry fruits...yes medium bodied...but full extraction of goodness! Dusty dry, with plushness, tannins...a nice streak of sour plum skin acidity freshness...crushed rocks minerality...PRETTY as all get out florals of lavender and violets, with some iron and pepper N Rhone funk...all seamless with great length and happiness! Drinks even better on day two! Love this bottle! (3724 views)
Tasted by cfk49 on 7/4/2022 & rated 94 points: Drinking magnificently tonight -- lots of soy and tapenade, minerality in a full body, balanced, great depth. Enough tannin for many years of aging, but can be drunk now. Cellared since original release. (3328 views)
Tasted by alanr on 7/3/2022 & rated 94 points: Has the body of a heavier burgundy, dark not quite opaque garnet. Virtually unchanged from release, showing subtle olive on the nose, with a touch of brine, palate has darker boysenberry / dark raspberry fruit, unusually high acidity that lends a beautiful tartness, more briny olive, green peppercorn, moderate tannins but well structured for years of development. The love child of Rhone and grand cru Burgundy, with a splash of Loire Cab Franc. A unique and special wine that could only be made in this difficult vintage. A wine to enjoy now and treasure in 30 years. (2995 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 5/7/2022 & rated 94 points: Dark, near opaque; fragrant, tapenade & a melange of black/red fruits; lovely clarity, vivacious freshness, harmonious, deft weight; panache on a classy finish. Will age gracefully for 5+ years. (3170 views)
Tasted by whits on 3/15/2022 & rated 94 points: Decanted 90 minutes, opens with an aroma of smoked meat, black pepper and beets, bright, lifted and elegant, high toned acidity holds all the elements in place, flavors of red plum, dried strawberry, olive juice and white pepper on the palate, umami, well crafted, drinking well now and has the acidity and energy to hold up in a cellar for quite a long time (3521 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/7/2022 & rated 92 points: This has class, sheer class. While certainly reflecting the vintage as a lighter style Gonon, this has plenty of stuffing for a longer life than most. Tell tale notes of olives, dark berries, garrigue, bacon - and a very fine acidity, not agressive in any wa.

Tasted by Nanda on 1/31/2022 & rated 91 points: 12/13/14/15 vertical. Just starting to enter a peak drinking window. Good freshness and richness to the fruit, though this will never be the most concentrated vintage. Northern Rhone nuance has emerged but will give even more complexity with a few years in the cellar. (3879 views)
Tasted by acyso on 1/31/2022 & rated 90 points: January Rhônes (Chicago, IL): I've not been a huge fan of this edition the few times I had it in the past; this bottle was pretty much in line with that. It's of a very light disposition, with an almost thinning palate. Much more briney and olivey, but lacking the weight that the best versions of Gonon have. Resolved and drinkable now; not a vintage I'd be keen on holding for too long. (4685 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 11/16/2021: opened at 4, decanted at 6 and back into the bottle, drank at maybe 8:30. The nose here is not the typical Gonon black olive, it's a floral nose, dark and also red fruit, some mineral tones, very elegant and fine. Balanced, focused, complex, and long on the palate - this is just a very good wine, and in this "off" vintage, shows a bit differently from your other Gonons of this 20-teen era. (4618 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
