Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Zweder on 10/22/2023 & rated 96 points: USA 2013 tasting by Sander (By SS @ De Ertepeller in Papendrecht): Beautiful and lush bouquet with ripe fruits. On the palate the same, juicy and full bodied, beautiful acidity and elegant. Some lovely sweet impressions. A beautiful and complete wine. (992 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 7/5/2023 & rated 95 points: This wine always floats my boat and today with our new wine friends R & N was no different. Pnp'd right into a decanter before we started in on our munchies mid afternoon. The color is deep garnet and the nose is absolutely exquisite. The 52% Cab Franc component is shining! Rich, perfumed florals along with the red fruit. The Merlot component also adds some spiciness to it. The palate reflects much of the same and this bottle was enjoyed over 5-7 hours by all of us. Just a tremendous wine for my palate. Balanced, nuanced, integrating quite well. Best after 1 hour in the decanter and held together over many hours til finished, never falling apart. (1537 views)
Tasted by corka on 5/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Outstanding bottle hitting all cylinders yet remains rather youthful as well. This wine clearly has many years ahead. In some ways I wish I would have held off a bit longer since it's my only bottle, but it was a special night, so no regrets! (647 views)
Tasted by Bob23 on 5/6/2023 & rated 93 points: Still deep dark fruit, with years of evolution left. Really tasty and nicely structured now. A great California BDX blend. (647 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 5/8/2022 & rated 94 points: Just one of many bottles aboard the 8 hour train ride through the Alps, this day. Notes as before, perhaps just a tad more strength and dominance on the cab franc end today, than with previous bottles. Opened an hour before consuming and enjoyed over 3-4 more. (2566 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 3/14/2022 & rated 94 points: Decanted briefly. Beautifully made Cab Franc-Merlot blend with polished, slightly fermented red fruit, integrated herbs and earth, silky texture. (1348 views)
Tasted by Bob23 on 2/19/2022 & rated 93 points: Starting to get nice savory tones - ample and delicious. Even better on night two. (869 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 7/18/2020 & rated 93 points: Close to WOTN, in my mind. This could certainly use more years to integrate but why? It's a great cab franc blend right now! This is so smooth and integrated..... (3581 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 8/16/2018: Earthy and powerful on the nose. And big and gutsy on the palate too. (3106 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 7/13/2016 & rated 90 points: Napa Visit 2016; 7/10/2016-7/13/2016: 2013 H Block - earthy mineral nose, seemed locked down. Not as expressive as the Merlot. Drying tannins. 90+ pts. Seems like this has room to grow. (4776 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 5/19/2016: Arietta Dinner w/Fritz Hatton (NY Vintners (21 Warren Street)): At the end of the night, this is the wine that we choose to bring home. It's 54% CF/ 46% Merlot. The baby of the group. Most of what I liked was more based on potential than really being ready for business now. Very herbal, touch of green, then truffle, it just kept changing and shifting in the glass. Very tasty. (3657 views)
Tasted by mactheknife on 3/5/2016 & rated 94 points: Opened and decanted for 30 minutes; drank over an hour with steak dinner; a bit of a smoky nose that was very attractive. Beautifully balanced, a bit fruit forward with a tar/graphite undertone. Tannins released nicely. Great wine. (3327 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.

Carneros

Straddles the southern ends of Napa & Sonoma Counties.
