Tasted by krvw on 8/8/2010 & rated 89 points: Easily one of my favorite qpr wines. Love the cherry and acidity balance. Definitely superb during barbecue season. (1678 views)
Tasted by chd850 on 4/12/2010: A: Coffee and black cherry, with hint of earth and tobacco
M: High tannin and acidity, not impressive the first night.

To be fair, it mellowed down the next day and became much approachable. (1707 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 11/8/2009 & rated 89 points: nice well balanced dark fruit aromas and flavors. (1749 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 4/29/2009 & rated 89 points: Nice dark, bright cherry, earth, cedar flavors. Well balanced, medium bodied. Drinking nicely. (1816 views)

87-88 pts (1928 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 5/7/2008: After months of guzzling Zinfandel Greenblanket begins his reentry with this well made wine. What a pleasure to drink with its poised black fruit, mineral structure, and lovely softly spiced earthiness. Not big or hedonistic or opulent just delicious and nicely balanced. (1160 views)
Tasted by dea on 3/26/2008: Dark in color with deep dark fruit that is well balanced. (1526 views)
Tasted by kris.h on 12/11/2007 & rated 88 points: Dark red / purplish. The nose is a bit simple and grapeish. Some spice. Cherries. The palate shows good balance with firm tannins and good acidity. More grape on the finish. Overall, a good wine. (1393 views)
Tasted by Michael Davis on 1/18/2007: Glass Used: Reidel Vinum Syrah - For the first hour or so after decanting the wine was fairly simple, with black fruit and dusty earth on the nose. On the palate it offered not much more than overly extracted blackberry and oak. A little too "new world" for my taste.
That all changes after two hours in the decanter. The wine took on a some nice notes of wet rock and lead pencil on the nose. During a dinner featuring grocery store purchased rotisserie chicken leg quarters, the wine really took off. It was a wonderful pairing. By this time, over two hours open, the acidity and tannins were in perfect balance with the fruit and new minerality. I think this will be even better after the big fruit calms down with some time in the cellar. However, it's quite delicious now. Just make sure you give it a few hours of air to let it really come into it's own. You won't be disappointed. (1682 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 11/17/2006 & rated 89 points: This wine is characterized by it's purity and drive from the brilliant purple color in the glass to the clean fruit and mineral palate though the smoothly tannic finish. While there are nice flavors and aromas present, (red and black fruit, violet, tar, mineral) this is all about purity and structure. Excellent. (1707 views)
Tasted by Wicker Parker on 11/14/2006: A nicely balanced wine that marries bright blue and black berries with the racy minerality of stone, subtle dried herbs, and shades of graphite, vanilla, and spice. Full in the mouth but zipped along by mouth-watering acids. For some reason this makes me watch to watch "The French Connection" again. I do like Gene Hackman! 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 15% Cinsault, 10% Carignan and 5% Counoise. (1135 views)
Tasted by Big Dog on 10/26/2006 & rated 88 points: Nice bottle of wine. Showed great up front red fruits and with nice tannin. I left about a glass in the bottle overnight on the counter uncorked and I expected it to be totally oxidized the next night but was pleasantly surprised that the wine opened up a little more. The last glass had some heavy sediment which seems unusual for a wine so young. (2107 views)
Tasted by karpems on 9/25/2006 & rated 89 points: A really nice fruit forward wine. It is not complex, but it does not try to be. No noticable flaws detected. Will improve(I think) over the next 3-5 years. (1977 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 7/25/2006 & rated 89 points: La Strada Ken and gang--amazing vibrant violet/ruby color--almost luminescent! Classic young CdR with tons of oozing brambly fruit. Not complex and deep, but doesn't try to be. (1919 views)
Tasted by kris.h on 7/2/2006 & rated 89 points: Dark red/purple. The nose is like cherries in the summer on a clear day. Also present are strawberries, blackberries, and some cool leather. Medium bodied mouth feel that is slightly tannic with good acidity. Medium length finish. 50 + 4 + 11 + 16 + 8 (2042 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 7/2/2006: This was shared with the No Spits as part of a picnic in Discovery Park that featured fried chicken and some traditional sides. It was a vibrant purple red in the glass with a nose dominated by grenachey red fruit and some floral notes from the syrah. The palate was also dominated by young, young grenache elements with some earth trying to peek through. We didn't get much of the black fruit described by previous posters. The finish was pretty strongly tannic. This wine seemed polished and balanced despite the fact that it hasn't been in the bottle very long. Very nice and we'll see how things develop this fall and winter. (2018 views)
Tasted by TheOtherPoster on 7/2/2006: We found this wine to be quite primary in those qualities we could coax from it, but it is surprisingly tannic and not yet ready to give what it haves. We will see what happens in a year or so. (2320 views)
Tasted by Ben Andersen on 6/2/2006: $11.99 full retail. Dark color. Nice concentration. Fairly deep, dark fruit, earth and ash. Well-structured. Recently shipped and, presumably bottled shortly before it left France... Needs a couple months to settle into the bottle. (2098 views)
Tasted by Erik R. on 5/22/2006 & rated 87 points: So young and primary. Medium bodied, almost new world cocoa powder, oolong tea, black cherry, black currants, and brutal tannin, but there is a nice lightness behind the obtrusive tannins. This is supposed to be an early drinker, but can't see this softening enough in the next couple of years, but what do I know. If it does, points will rise. (2479 views)

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Started in 1986 by the Delorme brothers, Domaine de la Mordoree (woodcock) has become one of the top estates in the Rhone, with arguably the most consistent quality. Christophe Delorme's objective as a winemaker is to be unintrusive and maintain total respect for his terroir and the fruit it produces, striving to achieve a perfect balance between concentration and terroir. The domaine consists of 55 Hectares, on 38 different parcels, providing a rich, wide range of soils and climates. They practice "culture raisonnée", with minimum intervention in the vineyards, and as close as possible organic viticulture.

The Story:

"The end never justifies the means" is the motto at Christophe Delorme's revered Domaine de la Mordorée. He believes that the means of achieving greatness is as important as the result itself. For Christophe, the "means" consists of total respect for Mother Nature, a philosophy that has guided him for the last 15 years. In 1986, Christophe Delorme decided to dedicate himself to his passion for wine. He started his estate with the objective to produce the best wines in each appellation while maintaining preservation of the environment. The majority of Christophe's vineyard sites are organic and biodynamic and they have established their own ecosystems within each site.

The improvements at the domaine have been incredible: new pneumatic presses, new stainless steel vats, new destemmers, new vinification techniques and ageing in the best quality oak barrels for their top wines. Only natural products are used to fertilize the soil in order to propigate biological activity with weeds grown between rows of vines to inhibit soil erosion and harmful insects. The yield is reduced in the vineyard by ébourgeonnage (de budding in spring) and "vendanges vertes" in summer (green harvesting). Machine Harvesting is forbidden and against the domaine's natural focus. The complex integrated pest control system which utilizes natural ecosystems is used instead of manmade intervention. No expense is spared at the Estate of this dynamic and advanced Rhône Producer.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
