Pretty closed at first, but opened up over a few hours. Fresh acidity, juicy fruit, with a bit of chalky minerality. Not a lot of tannin, but flavours built over time. Very pleasant, elegant Syrah. (91 Very good wine) (425 views) | | Tasted by Wineloon on 1/18/2020 & rated 93 points: It has that Syrah spice on the nose, there’s flowers too. Fresh flowers at that. Violets too. There’s a prickle of energy on the tongue and the fruit is berries and cherries with spice. There’s lovely acidity on the finish which is pretty long. Very satisfying. Difficult to put down the glass actually... chin chin (735 views) | | Tasted by chatters on 7/31/2015: Canberra, Beechworth & Rutherglen wine tour day one (Canberra): Spicy aromas, slight stalks, black, brooding fruit, smoked bacon fat…smells like ripe vintage Cornas. In the mouth it's spicy, with black berry, chalky tannins, but an underlying freshness and balance. Very good. (2375 views) |
| Eden Road Producer website
There are big changes afoot at this Murrumbateman-based producer. A new ownership structure with a commitment to do whatever it takes to progress, a new highly trained winemaker, and the plans to plant additional vineyards in an outstanding site (right next door to Clonakilla) are some of the things on the cards right now. Add this to the existing strengths of this producer - including a mature Syrah vineyard (on the same site as the upcoming plantings) and access to an array of quality Canberra and NSW high country vineyards - and the future certainly looks bright for Eden Road.
The new winemaker is Celine Rousseau. Rousseau was the founding winemaker and manager at Chalkers Crossing, where over a period of 17 years she developed a strong understanding and passion for the high country of NSW and its unique, cool climate vineyards and wines. She had already made a number of wines from the very vineyards from which Eden Road source, which has allowed her to hit the ground running. Before leaving France, Rousseau cut her winemaking teeth in Bordeaux and Champagne, working with the likes of Château Suduiraut and Château Pichon Baron. Rousseau still works two vintages a year, one in France and one in the Canberra district. Indeed, before joining Eden Road, Rousseau was being courted by several wine companies in Europe. In the end, Rousseau’s love of Australia won the day. At Eden Road she heads up a young team that includes viticulturist, Thomas Lefevre, whose CV includes M. Chapoutier Australia, Canobolas-Smith and La Colline, and assistant winemaker Brigitte Rodda, ex-Craggy Range, Mumm Napa (California) and most recently Willow Bridge Estate.
One of the first steps forward has been the simplification of Eden Road’s formerly too-complex range. The Eden Road offering now sits within two tiers: the Long Road and Eden Road ranges, and the array of single vineyard wines has been discontinued. All Syrah and Riesling wines come from Canberra (the Syrah is exclusively estate fruit as is much of the Riesling).
The one thing that hasn’t changed is the great value on offer, something that has always been a strong factor in Eden Road’s success.Shiraz Varietal article (Wikipedia) | Varietal character (Appellation America)Australia Wine Australia (Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation) | Australian Wines (Wikipedia)New South Walesd we’reSouthern New South WalesI |
