| Community Tasting Notes (average 86.5 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 6 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Wedge on 3/3/2019 & rated 89 points: Tasting through Corvin. Lots of Earth for a merlot. Licorice and orange peel, the latter of which I didn't find attractive. Tightness likely via Corvin and no breathing. (547 views) | | Tasted by Decanthor on 12/24/2018 & rated 90 points: Agree with Merryberry notes below. This Merlot is complex and delicious. An easy re-buy. (537 views) | | Tasted by eastern1 on 5/24/2017 & rated 87 points: No real aroma I could detect. Good color and average taste with a blueberry note. Dry aftertaste. Good wine overall. The wine looks crimson colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It tastes like blueberry. (845 views) | | Tasted by merryberry on 10/6/2016 & rated 88 points: Very dark magenta. Blueberries, fresh earth and spice nose. Medium bodied, blackberries, black cherries, soft tannins, nutmeg, dark chocolate, and a nicely fruited medium length finish. Very good and a good value. (878 views) | | Tasted by propapapa on 8/10/2016 & rated 75 points: Nose: nose is a bit weird. It's a super light nose. A bit dusty. But red fruit. Maybe a light ammonia? Palate: very sharp and metallic. Pretty thin. Not a fan. (913 views) |
| Kunde Estate Producer websiteMerlotMerlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountySonoma ValleySonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.
Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries. |
