Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 35 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Gonzo’s grape juice on 8/5/2023 & rated 95 points: Very vibrant. Great clarity with lively black fruit and sweet tannins. Wish I had another. It will be great for another ten years. (437 views)
Tasted by JCGuthrie on 6/18/2023: Bit hot on the nose. Dark berry compote on the palate, a bit tannic. Perhaps with more time this will fall closer into my wheelhouse. (424 views)
Tasted by Tym4wine on 1/29/2023: Bottle is off. No fruit. No tannins. Tart. Disappointing. Opened one two days ago Anna same experience. Very disappointing. Will withhold rating until next bottle. (604 views)
Tasted by rbfoote on 1/29/2023 & rated 91 points: Deep purple colour. Smell is vegetal and blue fruits, slightly earthy. Flavours of licorice, chocolate, green pepper are prominent. Tannins are moderate. Flavours hit fairly quickly and body is not extremely long but flavours do round out in the mouth. Will let it breathe and see if flavours change. (571 views)
Tasted by Tym4wine on 11/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Lovely floral bouquet. Fresh and lively. Burgundy red in the glass. Fresh acidity, wet and juicy. Dark black fruit flavors, blackberry, cassis and graphite on the medium+ finish. Tannins are firm yet rounded. Very nice wine. (716 views)
Tasted by Mh33 on 10/30/2022 & rated 93 points: Deep, plumb tastes with long finish. (494 views)
Tasted by wconnolly on 8/12/2022 & rated 90 points: Medium bodied with evident tannins. Raspberry, cherry, with a bit pepper on the palate. (744 views)
Tasted by bryon m on 3/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Drinking really well. Good color and body - seems like it could stay good for a few more years. Very enjoyable! (789 views)
Tasted by KillerJones on 3/26/2022 & rated 94 points: If this turns out to be my final post of 2022, all I can say is we went out with a bomb. Wowzah - this is some hugely satisfying red.

Powerhouse – yes, but no one, two punch. It’s all containment, structure, refinement - like the S.R. Crown Hall in Chicago.

I am hard pressed to find any fault with its command, how it encompasses Cab - without trying to impress.

Plain & simply awesome - many years to go here. (1159 views)
Tasted by Tahlequahdave1972 on 12/6/2021 & rated 92 points: One of the first "premium" wines that I experienced many years ago, and I must say it remains true today to that memory long ago. Decanted for two plus hours. Aromas of blueberry and floral notes along with a faint whiff of menthol. Blue fruits, vanilla, cola, coffee and mint flavors. Medium bodied and supple initially, with a polished, silky tannic structure to remind that this wine will continue to age gracefully. Nice, smooth finish. Delightful! (1074 views)
Tasted by bryon m on 11/8/2020 & rated 93 points: Pre dinner we had the Cinq Cepages 2013 followed up with the magnum of Beringer reserve 1994 with dinner (NY Strip and baked Potato), after dinner the 689 2017. HE Cing Cepage is drinking at it prime - full body, lots of Fruit and wood components and will continue to drink well for many years. The Beringer was excellent - In storage for more than 20 years. Full body, good fruit, finish was a little dry but very nice. The 689 was a nice wine to finish as it provides a little sweetness for a cab. (1503 views)
Tasted by bryon m on 5/16/2020 & rated 91 points: Color, body and clarity is excellent. Soft upfront with some tannins middle to end. Good Cranberry, cherry and a little wood. Over time the tannins in the end will soften but at this time was nice. (1168 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 11/22/2019 & rated 93 points: Decanted for an hour. Blackberry, chocolate pudding, cherries jubilee, hot stone and a little red licorice. A medium finish and body, with relaxed, yet starchy tannins, this will go the distance. Drinking well today, and not as full as many ‘13s...this is more feminine. Drink 2020 - 2036. (2848 views)
Tasted by Tahlequahdave1972 on 6/11/2019 & rated 92 points: Consistent year-to-year, the 2013 version of this Bordeaux style blend continues the tradition. Slow-ox for two hours. Dark and brooding with a nose of sweet fruit, spice and violets. Flavors included raspberry, anise, dark chocolate, tobacco, vanilla and graphite. Multi-layered and complex. Big, rich and yet so balanced and elegant. Tannins were not fully resolved, pointing to the aging potential of this beauty for many years to come. Finish was smooth with just the slightest touch of heat. Memorable! (2352 views)
Tasted by JGinMO on 3/28/2019 & rated 92 points: Terrific if young, with loads of blue fruit, but well balanced. (2217 views)
Tasted by novie1234 on 12/24/2017 & rated 91 points: Deep brooding berry with a significant amount of nice tannin at this age. Very well structured however well extracted. Deep garnet opaque with significant legs. With air, more layers come to play - mostly darker fruits and a nice smoky tobacco that contributes to the long finish. Overall, a great showing for Sonoma. (3299 views)
Tasted by Mh33 on 9/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Deep, full bodied with Bordeaux feel. (3587 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 7/30/2017 & rated 93 points: This was dark inky purple colored, medium full bodied, complex, rich and concentrated black berry fruits with layers of anise and graphite with tones of oak and spices on a smooth lingering tannin finish. (2491 views)
Tasted by Mh33 on 4/23/2017 & rated 92 points: Deep, smooth and accessible. (2935 views)

Chateau St. Jean

Producer website

Founded in 1973, Chateau St Jean has long been recognized as a leader in Sonoma County Vineyard Designated wines. Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren uses her more than 35 years of vineyard and winemaking expertise with Chateau St Jean to highlight the best of each vineyard in every wine.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
