Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ProfBainbridge on 4/28/2017 & rated 91 points: This is a huge, jammy, fruit forward wine. Deep purple. Nose full of black cherry, blackcurrant, cassis, and chocolate. Ditto the palate. Big tannins suggest continued aging potential. (2244 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 10/6/2016 & rated 92 points: JAMMY FRUIT, LICORICE, AND MINT IN THE NOSE WITH CHERRIES, PLUMS, BLACK CURRANTS, AND A TOUCH OF SPICE IN THE FLAVOR. MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH. (2130 views)
Tasted by korkd on 7/15/2016 & rated 93 points: Very nice wine, fine tannins, dark fruit, no significant signs of age but has seem to come together well. (2251 views)
Tasted by vinophobic on 2/13/2016 & rated 92 points: Rocking after quick splash decant. Tannins aren't fully resolved yet so no rush to open. (2685 views)
Tasted by johnwine on 11/21/2015 & rated 91 points: This wine displayed a dark brick color. The nose was wafting cherries and cherry jam. On the palate the wine was balanced with flavors of kirsch, chocolate covered cherries and cherry pie. A very jammy wine with a hint of spice. (2627 views)
Tasted by jsevans on 11/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Super cherry bomb. Almost like a cherry jolly rancher. Liked the wine, but not the most awesome with the meal (filet mignon). (1780 views)
Tasted by CamraMaan on 3/23/2014 & rated 94 points: I've been on a binge of drinking various fine 2003 Napa cabs, as they've all seemingly reached their maturity (finally), and this one did not disappoint! Full bodied, full of flavor, full of dark berry awesomeness, well rounded and fit to please! Hard to find a fault! It wasn't perfection, how but how often do we really find that?? At the bargain price of $45 (before shipping), I thought it was a steal! I'll happily buy more if I can find them! (1831 views)
Tasted by iawcc on 12/30/2013 & rated 93 points: Absolutely beautiful. Perfect balance with harmonious fruit and age. (1661 views)
Tasted by Mscruggs on 10/28/2013: Tobacco and mocha on nose cassis and fine tannins with a silky smooth finish (1674 views)
Tasted by Mscruggs on 7/27/2013 & rated 92 points: One of my favorite producers and this wine is still aging great. Cassis and dark fruit on the nose and palate the wine continued to open up over the hour or so it took us to finish the bottle. (1687 views)
Tasted by NEwino on 2/17/2013 & rated 93 points: This was an easy 93 point bottle that had a ton of great qualities. The nose was full of dark fruit that were well integrated. This took about 30 minutes to open up in the glass but after that it was smooth and well put together with a hint of tar on the finish. This is one of those wines that is excellet but will never have the stuff to get to that 95 point level. Drink now they are as good as they will get. (1690 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 4/11/2011 & rated 90 points: Sampled 4/10/11. Dark purple color. Nose of blackberries, cassis, tar, hard leather and herbs. On the palate much of the same. Not particularly well layered and the tannins still have a little roughness to them. An interesting wine that is still holding together quite well but doubt it will ever develop into a layered and smooth wine before it starts to fall apart. Nontheless, you've got probably another 5 years on this wine to see if I'm wrong. (1783 views)
Tasted by leadpencil on 10/23/2008 & rated 95 points: Dark black, full-bodied. Dense, concentrated blackberry, with huge menthol and eucalyptus characteristics. Cedar, scorched earth, and black olive. Seems somewhat unresolved at this time, but fantastic nonetheless. Tasted blind, felt this was the most interesting wine of the day. Actually thought this to be the Harlan. (1817 views)
Tasted by moutondoc on 1/12/2007 & rated 94 points: Great wine, cassis and blackberry with well rounded finish. I thoroughly enjoyed with my duck cassoulet. (2033 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
