Plummy. Like baked plums. Just not enjoyable. (2373 views) | | Tasted by neighborbill on 1/28/2009 & rated 87 points: A bit tight with moderate cherry fruit but shows signs of improving with a few years of cellaring. (2016 views) | | Tasted by AllRed on 6/16/2007 & rated 89 points: Majority Merlot, with 3% Cabernet Franc blended in. Deep ruby to garnet color, with notes of herbs, cinnamon, peppermint and blackberry. Plush fruit on the palate, with slightly firm tannins. Flavors of plum, blackberry and cherry, with a long finish. Rounds out a bit with some air, and the cherry flavor brightens up a bit. 89-90 pts. (2065 views) | | Tasted by rloomis on 4/6/2007 & rated 82 points: slightly jammy and very fruity: underwear pulled over the head atomic wedgie fruit bomb. got some varietal crabapple and leather aromas and flavors. sweet hot alcohol. Like the 05 ca sauv from the same tasting session: Leaning more to being a fruity alcoholic grape juce drink than wine, maybe serve from a punch bowl or in hurricane glass over ice with cocktail garnish and straw? (2146 views) | | Tasted by GTFreek on 2/18/2007: University Club tasting. A merlot that I enjoy, a rarity. Nice flavor and complexity. Looks expensive though. Too bad merlot has to be pricey to be any good. (2284 views) |
| B.R. Cohn Producer websiteMerlotMerlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountySonoma ValleySonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.
Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries. |
