Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 108 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by matters.of.wine on 1/21/2023 & rated 92 points: Donnhoff is one of my favorite producers. This was shared at a Riesling tasting, and was by far the least expensive bottle on the table, but stood up to some big hitters from a wide array of vintages. My take home from that tasting reinforced the notion that Riesling is an eternal elixir that only improves with age.

This bottle was a baby, but showed great concentration of peachy fruits and honey. It paired very well with samosas and cured pork sausage. Terrific value! (948 views)
Tasted by portman63 on 12/13/2022 & rated 91 points: Definitely showing mature, but the good aspects of that in the richness of the pitted fruit (apricot, nectarines) it was showing and the generally bright acidity starting to fade. Still honeyed and a very good pairing with tandoori chicken and butternut squash / lentils. (866 views)
Tasted by cvst on 11/10/2022 & rated 93 points: Honey in the nose with ripe pears and some burnt caramel. On the palate more honey, ripe peach, melon, slight petrol notes, some minerality, good weight, beautifully balanced with present acidity. Highly delicious with a variety of cheese and by itself within the following few days (968 views)
Tasted by acyso on 10/19/2022 & rated 90 points: WineBerserkers dinner (Chicago, IL): #06-06, 8.5% abv. This was showing a little more advanced than I would have expected, and lacking some of the cut that I like in my riesling. The nose first shows a bit of sponti, and there's a good amount of slatey minerality as well. The palate is a mix of yellow and white -- quite fruity and rounded. A good, chewy texture on the finish. (2061 views)
Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 9/9/2022 & rated 93 points: Golden yellow. Nose is floral, pear, apple. Taste was rich, moderately sweet, long aftertaste. Delish! (1127 views)
Tasted by gjv115 on 3/24/2022 & rated 95 points: Pnp. The glass actually made a lot of difference in how it went down. Syrah glass brought out the nose but cab glass made the palate richer. Canned apricots, pineapple, citrus, bright acid and absolutely beautiful with a 5 minute finish. It had a little petrol upon opening but blew off quickly. It's drinking great and has years ahead of it. (843 views)
Tasted by MartyL on 10/12/2021 & rated 93 points: Great bottle. Beautifully balanced sweetness and acidity. Otherworldly with Szechuan food. (1155 views)
Tasted by fisk15 on 6/6/2021 & rated 92 points: Drinking really well, balanced and refreshing. (1204 views)
Tasted by thalver on 12/24/2020: After a couple poor showings a few years ago, this bottle was spot on. Some petrol, some fruit, full and rich with the sweetness in the background, very unlike plump past bottles (1214 views)
Tasted by kenv on 7/15/2020 & rated 91 points: Pop and pour. A little less acidity than I would prefer, but still a delicious wine. Complex and appealing. (1629 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 2/18/2020 & rated 91 points: Very nice, tropical fruit, blackcurrant leaf and citrus. Rounded and correct level of sweetness for a Soatlese. Good because 05 was a ripe year with a tendency to sweetness. Probably a point now. (1367 views)
Tasted by kenv on 10/8/2019 & rated 93 points: Gorgeous, complex honey with hints of marmalade. Fully ready at this point. Went beautifully with chicken thighs with crushed green Castelvetrano olives, parsley, and white wine vinegar. (1642 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 1/13/2019: Yum. A little coconut on the nose. Fruit cocktail, slightly tropical, slight petrol. Very nice. (1471 views)
Tasted by jwolf99 on 7/4/2018 & rated 93 points: Slate and honeysuckle aromas immediately jumped out upon opening the bottle and were front and center in the glass; Lemon drops and honey crisp apples dominate on the palette; finish of candied orange peel and honey prevalent on long, creamy finish. (1864 views)
Tasted by acyso on 5/30/2018 flawed bottle: Dinner at Sun Wah (Chicago, IL): #06-06. Corked. (2798 views)
Tasted by DollarMenunaire on 12/24/2017: Cork totally crumbled but the wine was fine after decanting w/filter. Drinks more like an auslese and I’m sure it is. But after an hour in the decanter the slate mineral really came out. Shows a lot of richness and what you could still consider to be baby fat. But harmonious and enjoyable. Distinct Ranier cherry and satsuma orange fruit still in evidence. I wish it was slightly more energetic but perhaps that’s not in the cards on ‘05. It certainly still has upside though (1877 views)
Tasted by jrh82 on 12/2/2017 & rated 91 points: I was a bit nervous about this wine as I had bought it at an online auction and quite frankly had very bad experiences with that - something like 7 out of 12 bottles of various wines have been either barely alive or just completely dead. From Piemonte to Bordeaux to CnP. This wine though was very much alive and kicking. From the start you could sense the age of the wine - no hard edges, just totally mellow and harmonious sweetness and acidity. Apricote and honey on the nose. Creamy mouthfeel, some stony character. Not the most complex of wine, but highly enjoyable. Ate with spicy curry which worked! (1838 views)
Tasted by acyso on 9/14/2017 & rated 93 points: HDH auction tasting at Tru; 9/14/2017-9/16/2017 (Chicago, IL): #06-06, 8.5% abv. A fairly classic Donnhoff nose, with some fresh green herbs, light white fruits, and a touch of honeyed sweetness. The palate is quite ripe, with a touch of creaminess, though there is plenty of good acidity to cut it. Some kaffir lime, red apples, and stone fruit; this is fresh and racy but without too much bracing acidity. (3086 views)
Tasted by J o e on 9/8/2017 & rated 90 points: Light gold. Cherries, lychees and minerals abound here, along with a waxy texture, good density and a long finish that builds incrementally in the mouth. This rather large-scaled Spatlese carries a lot of residual sweetness and could use some more acidity. Still, a solid wine that is more suitable with the dessert course than with dinner. 90. (1659 views)
Tasted by thalver on 6/9/2017 flawed bottle: This bottle seemed advanced, perhaps somewhat oxidized. Golden yellow, this looked like a Sauternes of like age. acidity and some sweetness on the palate, but little else. This was properly stored (temp controlled cellar) since purchased from a retailer's shelf about 8 months after release. Possibly heat damaged. Though there was little flavor on the nose or palate, there were no indications of TCA (1772 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 2/8/2017 & rated 92 points: continues to please as it shows some development. still a lot of orchard fruit pleasant, along with slate and apple juice. bright acids balance out the sugar. Some honeycomb showing on med finish. (2429 views)
Tasted by Ebrim on 1/29/2017 & rated 91 points: No proper notes - extremly well balanced and solid complexity, but lacks the intensity and lenght to be oustanding quality, 91p (2103 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/14/2016: Acker Holiday Auction (A Voce Madison): Ask you shall receive. This is getting towards the end of a particularly wonderful but long night of red wine drinking and there was a bit of a desire for a touch of sweet and maybe a bit of something to change things up. Lo and behold someone is offering us a taste of their Donnhoff. One of my favorite producers. Hints of sweet and rock candy and a stone wall. Lovely. (2535 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 12/3/2016: Oh, this is so easy to drink: Mature, beautiful, complete, with the Dönnhoff melon-citrus twist. Ginger and garlic challenged it, however. (1852 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 9/19/2016: Medium yellow. Peach and apple. Too rich and round for me with low acidity. (2015 views)

Dönnhoff

Producer website

U.S. Importer (add'l info)

As a help to those who purchase and cellar these wines, let it be noted that the 'Goldkapsule' does not ofen designate a higher quality bottling from the producer Dönnhoff. Herr Dönnhoff uses gold capsules on about 99 percent of the l bottlings of certain richer wines from the vineyards Oberhauser Brücke and Niederhauser Hermannshöhle and perhaps some others. Therefore it is usually unneccessary and misleading to use the term 'Goldkapsule' with Dönnhoff wines, currently. Although, just to be confusing, David Bueker mentions that there may be one or two exceptions, especially in 2001 and 2003 vintages, where Donnhoff produced "white capsule" auslesen from the Leistenberg and Dellchen vineyards (later Dellchen auslesen have gone to the gold capsules - e.g. 2006). To have to list my notes on a Cellartracker page that has a non-necessary and meaningless 'gold capsule' designation is highly irritating for me, as I feel that if I list it correctly it won't even be picked up by a search.

Another example of the confusion above is with the frequent multiple bottlings of Eisweine from the Brücke vineyard. There were at least three bottlings in 1998 and three in 2002. They occur when prolonged cold snaps allow harvesting on successive days. Usually one of these is designated the 'regular' Eiswein and the best one is sent to the Auction. Each typically has a different style. They are informally referred to by the day of the week on which they were harvested. Thus in 1998 there was a 'Samstag' Eiswein, and one for 'Sonntag' and also 'Montag'. The last named is extremely powerful, and extremely expensive; it is the Auction lot.

It is STRONGLY URGED then that when referring to Dönnhoff wines one refers to the AP number If this terminology is not used, identity can be impossible to determine. JHT

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Nahe
