Acid still quite sharp, more years and/more time in decanter required. Grippy tannins. Not the best Riddoch I've had, maybe still a bit young, a bit underdecanted, and I also remain sceptical about the 2013 vintage, but it's still a very high quality wine. (536 views) | | Tasted by nwebstar on 8/18/2022 & rated 94 points: Classic and beautiful. Dark and very structured. Quite powerful. Blackcurrant, blueberries and graphite, leather and a little char. (2023 views) | | Tasted by Indran Rajendra on 2/5/2022 & rated 94 points: Still young without significant aged characteristics. Character like St Julien with elegance femininity and introspection. Super rich, concentrated and balanced. Very long aftertaste. Delicious and worth every penny. (3502 views) | | Tasted by lightning on 5/18/2019 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby. Despite reports of only 20-30% new French oak, the oak component dominates aromatically with strong vanilla notes, along with blackberries and a smidge of menthol. Medium to full bodied, full jolt of dense fruit on the midpalate, blackberries, cedar, vanilla; tannins fine textured yet firm, faint acidity underneath it all. Prepubescent at the moment and needs much time to fill out. Maybe try in 10 years? (Note: tasted considerably cooler than previous tasting back in April 2018). (3777 views) | | Tasted by nwebstar on 9/6/2018 & rated 95 points: Langtons Classification Tasting Sydney 2018. What a complete wine. Perfectly balanced between power and elegance. Classic youthful Cabernet with years of evolution ahead. Firm grippy tannins bounding dark black/blue fruitedness with a delightful little tarry olive and tobacco edge. Complete, stylish and simply wonderful. (3687 views) | | Tasted by chatters on 8/8/2018: GT Wine Limestone Coast Reds (8 Danks street, Sydney): A little muted initially, with agitation meaty blackcurrant cassis, sweet spice and plenty of new oak. On the palate it's broad, big boned, if you will, with brooding fruit and tannic. Not rewarding today but the fruit/tannin balance (and my experience of previous vintages) points to great longevity. Okay. (3495 views) | | Tasted by lightning on 4/30/2018: Tasted double blind. Aromatically seemed more like a Shiraz than Cabernet, ripe and rich with dark fruits. On the palate, polished and elegant tannins, dense fruit core, good sweeping texture. Ripe fruits. Bury this in the cellar, or give it a lot of air. Tasted only a few minutes after opening, and perhaps a touch warm. Based on this tasting, did not seem to have much Coonawarra typicity (or maybe my tasting skills need improving!) (2830 views) | | Tasted by Dom K on 7/19/2017 & rated 95 points: A side-by-side comparison of 2 of Australia’s top Cabernets (outside of Margaret River). Wynn’s John Riddock from Coonawarra vs Penfolds 407 multi-region blend. Both from the 2013 vintages. The Coonawarra has a Langton’s Classification of ‘Exceptional’ (Aus 1st Growth equivalent) and is roughly $125 vs the ‘Excellent’ Classification of the Bin 407 which retails around $80. Day 1: on the eye and nose, these were near identical and I would struggle to tell them apart in a blind tasting. Palate-wise the Coonawarra was the clear winner- with more regional distinction (given the single location) and textural pleasure. The 407 seemed somewhat one directional and missing a mid palate- nothing really interesting going on. Day2 however seemed to put the two on a level playing field. The 407 had opened up more to reveal beautiful dark berry fruit, cassis, bay leaf and mint chocolate. Overall, there is no clear winner for me – both are very elegant wines from Day 2 onwards. 95 points for both. (3475 views) | | Tasted by CamWheeler on 11/21/2016 & rated 94 points: TWE 2016 Expo: Blackberry, smoke, earth, blackcurrant, tobacco and cedar. Straddles the line between power and delicacy, with the fruit retaining its detail very nicely. Plenty of structure behind this to give it the foundations for extended aging. Excellent wine. (3570 views) | | Tasted by chatters on 8/12/2016: Coonawarra Roadshow (Ivy, George Street, Sydney): blackcurrant tending to cassis ,dusty cedar but spice and cream and all quite polished. In the mouth it's juicy and rich with cassis fruit that is strong but hidden beneath plentiful skin and oak tannins. Long as well. (2661 views) |

John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
First made in 1982, the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon was conceived as a flagship wine for Wynns. John Riddoch himself was a true visionary. Amongst his many acheivements are the building of the Wynns Gabled winery and the establishment of established the Coonawarra Fruit Colony John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon is made in small quantities from the best available fruit grown on the estate's extensive Cabernet Sauvignon plantings in the heart of the terra rossa soil It has become a definitive Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, made only in years when grapes of extraordinarily high quality are available, using less than one percent of the top quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
Grape Variety Cabernet Sauvignon Maturation 16 months in French oak (21% new).
TASTING NOTES Colour Dense and bright, with a purple hue.
Nose Dark, concentrated aromatics of black olive, mulberry and baked meats are elegantly fused with bay leaf and fennel seed, creating anopulent and complex wine.
Palate Supple and polished, this wine first displays concentrated black olive and mulberry, which lead to elegant tobacco, cassis and hints of rosemary. Powerful and restrained, the melding of concentrated dark fruit, subtle savoury notes and definitive, firm, bright chalky tannins, create a timeless wine with phenomenal purity and savory spice finish.
Technical Analysis Harvest Date March 2013 pH 3.55 Acidity 6.5g/L Alcohol 13.5% Residual Sugar 0.5g/L Peak Drinking This wine will reward careful cellaring for ten to 20 years.Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonAustralia Wine Australia (Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation) | Australian Wines (Wikipedia)South Australia South Australian Wine Industry Association | South Australian Wines (Wikipedia)Limestone Coast Limestone CoastCoonawarra Coonawarra |
