Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by cweiss on 7/30/2023: 75th Birthday party. Purchased at the Marché d'Ampuis on release. More ready to drink than a 1999 Juge, and a delight, but still young. I'll try to save the other bottle for 5 years. (330 views)
Tasted by viniferatu on 7/28/2023: Didn't take a note, but this had a notably beautiful creme de cassis note, plus nice subtle roasted and spicy tones, meat and olives too. This needs another 5 to 10 years I think, though it is certainly complex, intense and enjoyable now. (466 views)
Tasted by kuumies on 10/3/2021: En magnum. Very much open on the nose with obvious yet well integrated wood, generous ripeish blackberry fruit, a hint of VA and beef jerky. Classic and very respectable, of not the most detailed or bright. On the palate powerful and forward with abundant ripe fruit and quite a bit of spicy oak. Tons of structure, the tannins are big, plentiful and grippy. Very dry and savory, craves for food. Has not reach maturity yet but still I'm left wondering how much it will improve from here. Doesn't showcase the softest of winemaker's touch. (942 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 10/2/2021 & rated 92 points: From a magnum. Some sources say this wine comes solely from Voge's lieu-dit La Fontaine (planted in the 1920's), others say this is a cuvée of La Fontaine fruit and fruit sourced from Les Côtes. At least the current iteration of the wine is solely sourced from La Fontaine and made only in exceptional vintages. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, macerated for three weeks in stainless steel. Aged for a minimum of 24 months in 228-liter pièces (25-30% new, 70-75% once or twice used). Bottled filtered. 13% alcohol.

Very dark and somewhat translucent blackish-red color with a slightly evolved russet hue. Attractively evolved, moderately sweet-toned and slightly meaty nose here with aromas of ripe blackberries and mulberries, some juicy blackcurrant tones, a little bit of pruney tertiary fruit, light toasty woody notes suggesting some new oak, a hint of raisin, a touch of leather and a whiff of sweet fruit liqueur. The wine feels ripe and moderately sweet-toned yet relatively fresh and lively on the palate with a medium-to-moderately full body and quite evolved flavors of pruney dark fruits, dry old leather, some raisiny tones, a little bit of juicy blackberries, light mocha notes of toasty new oak, a lifted hint of sweet VA lending a slightly liqueur-ish edge to the fruit, supported by a touch of savory wood spice. There's lots of structure here, although the high acidity feels to be much more to the fore, while the ample but ripe and relatively smooth tannins contribute more to the structure, only slowly piling up on the gums. The finish is nevertheless moderately grippy and also less sweet-toned than the midpalate with a long aftertaste of fresh, brambly blackberries, some mocha oak tones, a little bit of evolved pruney fruit, light ferrous notes of blood, an umami hint of raw meat and a peppery touch of savory spices.

A very ripe and still somewhat oaky but also a very sophisticated Cornas with a lot of stuffing. Although the oak still shines a bit through, the overall wood influence has integrated pretty nicely with all the fruit - basically the wine appears oaky just because it was drank along with a big handful of Northern Rhône Syrah wines that didn't show any obvious oak influence. All in all, the wine feels like it is quite close to its peak, but not yet sitting firmly on its plateau of maturity. However, I doubt there's going to be much noticeable evolution from here; this wine will keep for a long time, but any development is going to be quite limited. Great balance between the ripe fruit and hefty structure. As the ample tannins feel quite resolved at this point, the wine doesn't call any more aging to soften it up, just to integrate that remaining toasty oak character better with the fruit. (1412 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 8/21/2020: Aerated to decanter 45 minutes; certainly helped. Still remarkably fresh, with profound notes of grape and place. I don't drink so much from this region any more, but does this ever bring me back to when I did. Really long, layered finish. On point just now, don't wait. Brilliant. highly recommended (1813 views)
Tasted by pilot360 on 4/21/2020 & rated 88 points: Was ID by a friend as Northern Rhône. Deep fruit, b fat, massive black olive, Smokey BBQ.
The nose seemed subtly, and faded a bit after an hour in decanter. Full bodied with hidden tannins, noticed on the sides of your teeth. (1184 views)
Tasted by pilot360 on 1/28/2019 & rated 93 points: Fruit dominate - strawberry and cranberry, drops off to a mineral backbone , with a floral bouquet. Black olive. The tannins were integrated but elevated the structure.
Fresh , bright and alive on the palate, uplifted red fruit - raspberry, strawberry, tart. Had fall spices and slight herbal undertones.
Overall , ready to drink, and gives and gives.
A beautiful wine.
Good to drink now or in 5 Was loved. Served at Delfino’s . (1572 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 12/6/2017: very evocative nose, liquorice, southern herbs, garrqiue
Tannins are so silkly and fruit still so fresh and ripe
This is on top form, class of the vintage shining through. So open and delicious but also fresh and youthful. Very long
Superb! (2018 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 1/5/2017 & rated 91 points: This was our last btl of the night and was overshadowed by the more fully realized 01 Giacosa Asili and the 98 Clos Des Pape at the same table. That said, I usually don't gravitate towards Voge's version of Cornas but this was starting to integrate and drink pretty well. Still some tannins to meld here too or perhaps a decant would have helped. Pretty sure this opened upon arrival. Stand alone I might even be raving. And sadly as the very last btl of the night after 2 champages, two still whites and several other glorious reds, it never got the attention it truly deserves. I'd love to try this again in 3-5 years. 91+ (2234 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/5/2017 & rated 91 points: A Potpourri of Great Wines at Alma (Restaurant Alma, Mpls): very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Cassis and dark fruits, ripe, gravel, tar and some meat notes, still a bit of oak and tannin that will fold in more. This was getting progressively better in glass. Ideally a couple more years or a bit more of a decant and this should deliver even more. 91+(+)pts. (2575 views)
Tasted by Dave Dalluge on 6/4/2016 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured. Enticing and expressive nose of dark fruit and dried herbs. Equally great on the palate. Still pretty primary, but starting to open up. Good flavor intensity and good balance. Drying finish. I'm very pleased with how this has developed, but would recommend holding off on opening these a bit longer as they will undoubtable continue to develop. (2308 views)

Tasted by phil the agony on 3/14/2016 & rated 93 points: Mon deuxième vin de la soirée.
93 pts (1914 views)
Tasted by Wfjohn on 8/8/2014 & rated 94 points: Terrific wine. Dark ruby colour. Dark, stewed fruit on the nose. Palate was cherries, meat, olives. Very savory wine. Great with food. Tannins were present and felt like they developed. I found them enjoyable but this wine could easily last another 10 years I'd say. Long finish. Wish I had more. (2113 views)
Tasted by KenK on 11/13/2013 & rated 91 points: Dark ripe aromatic wine showing classic animal so typical of great Northern Rhone wines with grilled brioche, black plums, and dark rich fruits. Comes across still very primary, yet with wonderful raw materials. Flavors are tense, lean, dry with acidic edge while fruits is clearly ripe, relatively hard and a seemingly a bit muted. Finish is impressively long with lots of floral character and sour cherries. This seems to hold a lot of promise, but not giving its all from a pop and pour. Still quite nice for purity and being true, just closed down a bit in the middle. Far from a fleshy wine, yet wonderful mouth filling silky texture. My advice would be to check on this in another 3-5 years and hope it opens more. 91+ for now, but upside seems likely if fruit blooms rather than dies. (2458 views)
Tasted by thomaskeil on 10/22/2013 & rated 93 points: At Pierre Orsi. Opened and left at table for 45 min - I would decant as airing in glass opened it some. Agree with AlanR; this wine gives pleasure at many levels. On nose there is blue, black and red fruits, vanilla, iron, spice and earth. Great fruit presence on entry that continues to build towards thickness, but then meets silky tannins and fine mineral acidity. Good length, complexity and finesse. Firm tannins noted by others may have been masked by my venison in a red wine reduction but this Voge really contributed to a wonderful dining experience. (2255 views)
Tasted by ed-d on 3/2/2013 & rated 89 points: This is hard as nails now. Lots of good fruit & iron minerality but the tannins are just dominating this wine at the moment. Stay away from this one for at least a few years. (2295 views)
Tasted by alanr on 12/31/2011 & rated 94 points: Dark, nearly opaque garnet, nose is enticing, like walking into an old wooden winery; this is a northern Rhone for Burgundy drinkers, with fascinating and complex flavors of dark fruit, dried herbs, black pepper, a combination of depth and elegance. Gorgeous wine. (3262 views)
Tasted by Dave Dalluge on 3/6/2011: I hadn't tasted this since visiting the Domaine with Steve and Ben in 2006. This is still extremely primary and has barely budged in 4.5 years. The nose reminded me more of a ripe Napa Cab than Northern Rhone. Equally big and plush on the palate with plenty of ripe, dark fruit and perfect balance. My remaining bottles will be tucked away for a long sleep as this is likely in need of 15-20 years in the cellar. (2542 views)
Tasted by Ben Andersen on 6/19/2006: Barrel sample tasted at the domaine. Looks to be very good. Dark raspberry fruit. High tannin + acid levels give it big structure. Quite concentrated. Slightly darker fruit profile than the 2004 (see TN). (2746 views)
Tasted by Siggy on 6/19/2006: France Trip Part 2 - Northern Rhône; 6/18/2006-6/20/2006: Barrel sample tasted at the domaine. Just finished fermentation. A little reduced. Dense and primal, with good acidity and palate heft. Concentrated. Seems promising but tough to evaluate. (4137 views)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
