| Community Tasting Notes (average 93 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by jshufelt on 3/8/2024 & rated 94 points: Consistent with previous tasting note - this is in a very good place right now. (138 views) | | Tasted by jshufelt on 11/15/2022 & rated 93 points: Pop and pour into a decanter. In the glass, clear dark red. On the nose, cherries, plums, and a burst of fresh ground pepper. On the palate, dark fruit with a rustic, rough texture, with secondary notes of peach and pepper. At the risk of offending someone at Sanguis, this comes across as the low rent version of a good-vintage Bossman, i.e., a Cali Cote Rotie (Bossman!) with choppy tannins (not Bossman). With that said, I'm always a sucker for that peach note in Syrah, and now that we seem to be past the dumb phase, this is my kind of wine. Nose: blueberry, orange peel, violets
Palate: raspberry, pomegranate, long finish with an amazing mouthfeel.
Drinking really well right now, and I think it’s at its peak. (469 views) | | Tasted by IAmVintage on 8/11/2022 & rated 91 points: Indeed gentile earthy black fruit goodness with a wee bit of tapenade, soft tannins and pepper. Yes it fades more quickly than would have preferred, which means we rushed the next sip and killed the bottle more quickly than normal, but oooh well, still quite enjoyable... :-p (460 views) | | Tasted by RPerro on 3/2/2022 & rated 92 points: P&P through an aerator. Delicious and elegant wine with hints of tannin. Red and black fruit, woodsmoke, cedar, black olive and tobacco flavors. Surprised how quickly the finish falls off. Loved everything about this one right up until the end of every sip...drink now - 2023. (538 views) | | Tasted by JWM03 on 8/5/2021: Almost really lovely Syrah blend from SB. Deep red fruit smell, with a nice lightly smoky, woody undertone. Big and bold in mouthfeel, coats the mouth, very light tannins. Simple, but pleasant. unfortunately sharply falls apart on the backend, which made this probably not a rebuy. (588 views) | | Tasted by SyrahForth310 on 11/13/2020 & rated 90 points: Deep color. Strawberry, blackberry on the nose. Black cherry, strawberry on the palate. Gentle, sweet finish; light tannins. (471 views) | | Tasted by Quiet Lion on 4/11/2020 & rated 93 points: Pop and pour. This is singing with firm, structured tannins, smoky dark fruit mouth-filling palate, medium finish that fades seamlessly. I love the name Pilgrim for this, the Sanguis with the strongest backbone and most clearly Syrah. (881 views) | | Tasted by Quiet Lion on 5/30/2019 & rated 92 points: Pop and pour. Square-shouldered Sanguis with dark fruit, grilled toast, black pepper, nutty finish. Simple and deep. (1034 views) | | Tasted by jonahfactor on 5/5/2019: A Cali-Rhône blend that knocks it out of the ballpark. Decanted for 60 minutes, this offering is open for business. Aromatic with Asian spices and black fruits that caress the palate with blackberries, espresso, creosote and hillside herbs. A lusty, rewarding finish. This is a beautiful wine (and, unfortunately, our last bottle). Drink now (with decant) through 2027. Outstanding. (846 views) | | Tasted by MattMauldin on 3/3/2019: Tasting at Sanguis: Peppery aromatics, black cherry, minerals, dried florals. Boysenberry fruit on the palate with dried herbs, savory spices, florals and melted stone - seamlessly layered. Huge profile, but well-balanced and silky, round tannins and a big finish. (807 views) | | Tasted by jshufelt on 3/3/2019 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 45 minutes before service. In the glass, clear medium-dark red. On the nose, cherries, plums, and a hint of pepper. On the palate, dark fruit leading the way with secondary notes of pepper, peach, earth, and a salty note somewhere between beef blood and seawater. Somewhat muted finish, but the complexity here makes me think we caught it during a dumb period. I have a feeling another 2-3 years will get this one to a pretty nice spot... (805 views) | | Tasted by Rscholtz on 3/14/2018 & rated 94 points: On the nose, loads of black fruit, warm curry spice, dried mushroom. Palate is coffee, cocoa powder without the bitterness, and red fruit finish. The finish is long with a very light acid hit. Truly exquisite. (1048 views) | | Tasted by bonedocnine on 11/11/2017 & rated 95 points: The best Pilgrim to date. Absolutely delicious. Stylistically classic Sanguis. If you have had wines from Matthias you will love this!!! (960 views) | | Tasted by RockinCabs on 3/29/2017 & rated 95 points: Nose: Great earthy funk, cracked pepper, garden vegetables and a massive dose of spicy dark fruit. Palate: Enters with huge Cherry, Plum and quince fruit and then gives charcoal, game and leather notes. Spice is nice all over this, and it is balanced with velvety fruit Finish: Long and detailed with great mineral and earth supporting the fruit.
paired beautifully with a Buffalo sirloin. (1460 views) | | Tasted by jonahfactor on 11/6/2016: (Tasted at the Winery) Most forward of the wines we tasted. Roasted meats, Asian spices, white and black pepper and gobs of blackberries. Erupts from the glass. Many years ahead. ( = Outstanding) (1284 views) | | Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 5/14/2016 & rated 94 points: BT - Favorite non-cab of the evening! (1399 views) |

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. Pilgrim On weinlagen-infoUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Central Coasthttp://www.ccwinegrowers.org/links.html
