Tasted January 8, 2007 at home as part of the Wino Depot Tasting With Friends event. Opened and splash decanted about 30 minutes before serving in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, slightly opaque looking. Slightly muted nose of blueberries, blackberries, plums and a little bacon fat hiding in there. Juicy blackberries early on but tightened up almost immediately barely giving way to some Bing cherry and black licorice notes. Medium acidity and tannins with medium to full body. I think I’d recommend holding this another 6 months to see if it improves a bit. Based on my local retail price of $17.84 I’d say the value here is cautiously recommended. | Lincourt Producer website2004 Lincourt Syrah Santa Barbara County2006 Los Angeles County Fair Wines of the World 2005 competition. Gold Medal. Winemaker's Notes: Hand harvested in September and October, the 2004 vintage of Santa Barbara County Syrah is blend of two premium vineyards. Sourced primarily from the Star Lane Vineyard (68%), a warm-climate hillside property found in the eastern Santa Ynez Valley, the balance comes from Rancho Santa Rosa in the cool, maritime-influenced Santa Rita Hills AVA. Classic vinification coupled with the finest French cooperage further enhanced the Syrah. At the winery, fruit was destemmed, crushed and racked to open-top fermentation tanks for a two week extraction period. Following extraction the wine was pressed and transferred to small 60-gallon French oak barrels for aging. The Lincourt 2004 Syrah has an intense core of jammy fruit with subtle spicy nuances in the recesses. In the bouquet aromas of late-summer plum, boysenberry and blackberry jam mingle with chocolate, creme de cassis, white pepper and hints of lavender. Full-bodied, the wine is fleshy, round and textured in the mouth.Syrah Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)
Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Central Coasthttp://www.ccwinegrowers.org/links.html
