Community Tasting Notes (average 92.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 77 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by tbrader on 12/29/2023 & rated 91 points: Consistent with previous notes. Still plenty to offer; elements in balance. (447 views)
Tasted by jroszkowski on 6/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Inky purple color. Black currant, graphite, and blackberry on the nose. Blackcurrant, maraschino, cherry, vanilla, and licorice flavors. An iron core and will integrated tannins before a long finish. The fruit is still fresh, still has another 8 to 10 years in bottle. (660 views)
Tasted by Bin707LoversDetroit on 2/17/2023 & rated 92 points: Wow, that a vin so big & bold, with such a glass-fillling nose, unbreakable and full, is also so supple, refined, tangential- in that it seems to work as the focus or the background equally well. Hmmm.. Beguiling. We only coravin'd a (very full - oh why do we bother?) glass.

When we fork the cork to decant, it may open in a whole new way. If it does, we'll write then too...

Bought it 3/2018 from Wine Social, Oxford, for $49. Cellared since. Well worth that. And the five year wait in the racks...

Rare, only 325 cases in total!

Nearly up there w the best Penfolds Bin 389s...

Yum.

NOTE: Emptied the previous-day-coravin'd bottle, and it was more cohesive, more delicious, smoother, and we bumped it to a 92...

Enjoy!!! (949 views)
Tasted by Quiller on 1/25/2023 & rated 89 points: Opened, poured and let sit about 1/2 hr. A bit of dark fruit nose. Taste is more like my 11/27/22 Day 2 note: "meatiness" aspect is minimal; more reddish fruit; reasonable balance; tannins not an issue. Unfortunately, taste is somewhat muted and, as with prior bottle on Day 2, not much syrah profile. Taken as a group (there were a couple before these 2 postings), something of a disappointment; nothing approaching the higher scores posted. (868 views)
Tasted by Quiller on 11/27/2022 & rated 90 points: Opened, poured and let sit 1/2 hr. Nose of dark fruit. First sip is sweet fruit, with earthiness/meatiness towards the finish. Over the next 45 min the sweet fruit remains, but no so prominent; the meatiness aspect begins to dominate. Pretty reasonable balance, except by the end of the glass astringency takes hold on the finish, along with the meatiness. Maybe a little too meaty for my taste, but fits the Cali syrah profile reasonably well. This probably can go longer, but not sure if the fruit component will survive.
Tried this again on Day 2 and liked it better. The "meatiness" aspect was very faint and sweet red fruit more in evidence. Tannins not a particular issue and reasonable balance. This version might be hard to recognize as syrah, but more pleasurable than Day 1. (1060 views)
Tasted by tbrader on 7/18/2022 & rated 91 points: Dark purple hue. Pretty floral nose. Sweet Syrah fruit hits the tongue upfront. Blackberries and black currant, Rich inky fruit w/o seeming too hot or excessive. Yes, nicely balanced overall. Fruitiness lingers with a fairly clean, slightly mineral finish. (1212 views)
Tasted by Mr.Overhill on 5/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Still quite youthful, a wonderfully full flavored wine with upfront blackberry flavor and nice underlying acidity. While it starts big in the front the mid palate brings out a more refined earthiness and aspiring meat flavors. Really wonderfully balanced wine with softening tannins and a long blue fruited finish. Easily has another five plus years of refinement potential. (1284 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 3/15/2022 & rated 92 points: Really enjoyed this. In a good drinking window. Inky teeth staining wine that has rich but not overpowering fruit. (1244 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 1/18/2022 & rated 92 points: The '19 offer arrived so I had to try this. I'm buying the '19s. (1300 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 1/2/2022 & rated 92 points: Stands out, even for a Carlisle. Could go 93. Big, ripe, complex, has several more years left. (1138 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 12/27/2021 & rated 93 points: very tasty, delicious, rich blackberry fruit with slight white pepper flavors, excellent structure, ample finish (1100 views)
Tasted by qcwino on 9/20/2021: Dark. Monolithic. Not my thing. (1225 views)
Tasted by SineQuaNon on 5/21/2021 & rated 92 points: This is one of my favourite Carlisle wines. It’s just always on and displaying great Syrah character. It is close to 93 but this bottle had the misfortune of being consumed next to a 2018 SQN syrah. That was utterly spectacular goosebump inducing greatness. I had the first sip of this before the SQN and my instinct was 93 but I wanted to evaluate later. That was probably not a good idea so I have to stick to 92. Anyway; wonderful wine! (1375 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 5/20/2021 & rated 87 points: Damn! This is HUGE. I love the Carlisle Zins, but this high octane Syrah misses the mark. Tannic, 14.9% alcohol and really really ripe it's a difficult pairing with a juicy ribeye! Dial it back a little please. 2 glasses and time for bed. Would have guessed Australia Shiraz from back in the day. (1133 views)
Tasted by Sonoma-W on 5/13/2021 & rated 93 points: Excellent! Thick purple color. Lots of structure -- almost Cote Rotie like (1098 views)
Tasted by jvphoto on 4/9/2021 & rated 92 points: Dark color, lighter body than expecting as well as some red/berry fruit along with plum, blackberry, iron, 5 spice. Some thought Syrah-Grenache, some thought Syrah-Cab in a mini-blind. (1187 views)
Tasted by BunnyLV on 1/30/2021 & rated 94 points: Terrific wine! Great QPR! Opaque purple, no rim, with highly aromatic nose of black plums, blackberries, violets and black pepper with hint of bacon. Changed throughout the night over 2 hours. Will see how it lasts on Day 2, but for now, well-balanced, medium+ body, medium finish. Highly recommended! (1279 views)
Tasted by pgm on 12/27/2020 & rated 93 points: Bright looking. Nose of blackberries, cigar box, orange peel and oyster shell minerality. Good intense black fruit with a persistent and complex finish featuring black currant and baking spices. Still drinking great, and should for five years at least. (1285 views)
Tasted by michigan dogs on 11/21/2020 & rated 93 points: I really enjoy the Syrah's from Carlisle, this has evolved over the years and no longer has that barnyard effects. This was well balanced with some rustic, bacon fat flavors. would guess it to be a Syrah blind. (1214 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 11/15/2020 & rated 90 points: Last bottle of this and while it is balanced for me it's "meh" compared to other Carlisles and other vintages of this vineyard (much like last notes on 7/12/20). Still 90+ and glad to move on. (1341 views)
Tasted by Brhouts on 10/8/2020 & rated 94 points: Great syrah inky color (1226 views)
Tasted by Mtnmd1 on 7/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Silky soft tannins. Good mouthfeel. Dark reddish purple in the glass. Dark fruit. (1185 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 7/12/2020 & rated 90 points: 2 1/2 hour slow ox. Nose: Earthy w/ dark fruits. Palate: Very dark fruited with some scortched earth, soft tannins, decent acid levels and a medium length elegant finish (by Carlisle standards). Not sure what to make of the 2014's as this is nice but reminds me of the Rosellas in that this is more finesse and missing some of the "X factor" that Carlisle is known for. Nonetheless a solid 90+ points. Last bottle will be drunk up sometime over the next year. Would recommend a pop and pour or very minimal slow ox as this is good to go and will not improve w/ further cellaring IMO. (1356 views)
Tasted by WineCPA on 3/29/2020 & rated 92 points: Quite good. Inky purple. Moderate tannins. Smooths out nicely with a decant of a few hours. Then it becomes like velvet. Plums, blackberries all over the palate. Drink now. (1507 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 1/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Lighter than I remember, medium red fruits, bacon, baking spices, black tea, tree bark. Amazing silky texture and purity of fruit. Very good! This was a PnP and ready immediately, but did improve with a couple hours in bottle as a slow ox. (1947 views)

2014 Carlisle Syrah Sierra Mar Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands

Release Letter:
Picked the same day as Rosella’s Syrah, September 30th, our approach with this wine was somewhat similar. Twenty-five percent whole cluster. Nineteen days on the skins. Where our approach differed, however, was in our decision to inoculate. Also, since this wine was a touch riper than Rosella’s, we opted for less oak (14% new French oak to be exact) to let the fruit shine. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Note: This vineyard lives down the road, just south of its older sibling, Rosella’s, but exhibits the feral and rustic qualities imparted by elevation, thin soil, and a warmer microclimate. The wine introduces itself with hard candy, violets, ruby red grapefruit and lavender on the nose. The pluot and cassis characters on the palate yield to a bacon fat quality that is strongly reminiscent of the “Honey-Lavender Bacon” from our local butcher (good stuff!). Fine-grained tannins on the finish, but this is a wine of depth and intensity that could find its true “happy spot” with some proper cellaring.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
