Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 1/29/2024 & rated 91 points: Retail $40. 100%(?) Syrah. I know I got these from Last Bottle Wines in early 2019, but I am not sure how much they sold for (I got them with credits). Apparently, I received six bottles, but I only have three left. Yeah. Mysteries abound. Good red fruit on both the nose and the palate with touches of earth and spice. I was ready to not like this wine, but this is a solid wine from start to finish and quite a pleasant quaff.

Tasted by guribh on 6/15/2023 & rated 81 points: Annual TN: manged to finish the case I (unfortunately) bought. See previous notes. No improvement. Still got a few of the 2015s. Downgrading expectations to "strong sell" . I doubt I will have takers, so stay tuned for TNs on those as well. (369 views)
Tasted by dude1999 on 1/9/2023 & rated 80 points: Nothing but black pepper. (634 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 11/21/2022 & rated 86 points: weird and vinyl-y (655 views)
Tasted by guribh on 7/6/2022 & rated 85 points: Annual TN... : still not enjoyable. Likely never will be. A Syrah behaving like a Cab Franc in a less-than-positive way. (991 views)
Tasted by tward on 12/2/2021 & rated 89 points: Really nice bottle, this last one, and best on the second night. It might be a bit lean for some tastes, but on the second night it was a ringer for N. Rhone / quality St. Joseph with green olive, black olive, floral notes, deep earth character. 12.6% abv (1233 views)
Tasted by bajayngo on 10/23/2021: Green awkward and in a bad place on both bottles. Still have one left to go (1165 views)
Tasted by guribh on 9/21/2021 & rated 85 points: Somewhat of an annual TN: quite disappointed. Not fleshing any, rather "green" still. While I appreciate the integrity of this style, this showing did not resonate with me. (1272 views)
Tasted by DugyDog on 6/6/2021 & rated 92 points: By far the best of the 4 bottles i have consumed. Tannins finally integrated, dark fruit with some tar, bacon and molasses…much improved and think it has several years in front of it (1424 views)
Tasted by lelandinmichigan on 4/8/2021 & rated 92 points: Medium garnet. Dark at the core but no purple in sight. Aromas are cool, clean , fresh and fairly restrained. Some licorice and euchalyptus and deep rich fruit. Tastes like it smells. Polished. Balanced. Very nice wine. Drinking well on day two. (1365 views)
Tasted by prasm on 2/19/2021 & rated 90 points: Pop and pour, consumed over 2 hours. Appearance: Clear, pale purple. Nose: Clean, medium+ intensity, developing aromas of bramble, black pepper, raspberry, strawberry, and hints of shoe leather. Palate: Dry, high acid, medium alcohol, medium+ tannins, pronounced intensity, medium body, with flavors of tart dark red fruit, black pepper, and spice with a medium+ finish. Excellent effort drinking well currently but with many, 5+, years of life ahead. A Garagiste steal at $14, 2 left in the cellar. (1320 views)
Tasted by Wine in the Woods with Beth on 12/8/2020: Nice easy drinking wine (1424 views)
Tasted by tward on 9/21/2020 & rated 87 points: I enjoyed this with a casual meal with a nearly disjointed mix of food - think "what's in the fridge and freezer" throw-together. A prior private tasting note from about a year ago indicated it was in a mixed non-wine-focused casual group, but that I thought it was confectionary and noticed oak. I did not find that this time. I found a wine that straddled old and new, that didn't necessarily have any great character, but that showed the variety well, good sense of ripeness with a lean body, clean, and easy with food. At 12.6% abv, a good choice when having wine on a weekday! Glad to have a couple more at the $14 close-out price. (1813 views)
Tasted by Rico100 on 9/21/2020 & rated 87 points: very acidic (1490 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 9/19/2020 & rated 87 points: Marginally better than the bottle enjoyed back in February 2019, but still underwhelming. Notes of black pepper, underripe black fruits, and considerable greenness. Pass in the future. (1436 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 9/19/2020 flawed bottle: Brett (1235 views)
Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 9/11/2020 & rated 88 points: Nothing to do with "real" Syrah (French Rhone) or even spoofalated Aussie Shiraz, this attempt at something lean (12.6%) wasn't half bad to drink. Light, balanced, fruity, an easy quaffer. Of course that's because I was looking at it from a $14+ lens and not the original release price of a whole lot more than that!!

So that's the thing isn't it. At $35 or $45 I would have been disappointed but at $14+ I was delighted. Divorce, winery sales, new starts, all make me feel sad, but move on we must.

Not a wine for ageing at all. Drink as soon as you can to enjoy the freshness. (1219 views)
Tasted by thalver on 8/28/2020: Meh....some bottles of this have shown better than others. This one was shrill, hard and green. I understand the pursuit of more acidic, Continental flavors in syrah, but where is its California terroir? this tasted like something from the shady north side of the hill on a rainy, cold year. (1153 views)
Tasted by guribh on 8/17/2020 & rated 89 points: See my TN of 6/28/2019. A somewhat experimental wine (in terms of style). If you're expecting a Shiraz-like beast, you will be disappointed. If a Northern Rhone is your model, it is closer, but more of the St. Joseph variety rather than Hermitage. I can see pegging this as having some Grenache or even being a cru BoJo. Good in it's unique way (whole cluster fermentation) but for me - only at the close-out pricing of around $20. (1312 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 6/19/2020 & rated 87 points: Dark red murky color. Dark fruit aromas. Muddy cherry with some tartness and acid on the finish. (1480 views)
Tasted by CPSchoeff on 6/4/2020 & rated 90 points: A: Pepper, iron, game F: red fruits, spice, nice middle weight style and tannins that are now mostly resolved.

Moving this firmly into the drink column.

You really need to stand this up well before opening. Lots of fine sediments that will get stirred up and make the wine taste hollow and sour...noticeable in the final bits of the bottle. (1609 views)
Tasted by redz on 5/23/2020 & rated 90 points: My first bottle a year ago was undrinkable, but this was nice. Lighter Syrah, I would have guessed some Grenache involved. Reminded me of a lighter CDR. Should continue to improve. (1578 views)
Tasted by markjanes on 3/27/2020 & rated 82 points: last couple bottles have been less impressive and more in the "good" range... bit more hollow and less palate weight (1964 views)
Tasted by Coupe 60 on 3/26/2020 & rated 87 points: Over the course of the past year this bottle has really evolved for the better. Has filled out a bit more, and dark fruits really shine thru. Pretty good (1738 views)
Tasted by Epic Tale on 3/2/2020 & rated 87 points: (opened yesterday) - color: bright ruby red; nose: touch of chocolate sweetness; taste: medium-bodied mouthfeel, dark fruit taste with tart acidity, medium-length finish with herbal notes and light tannins; overall: presents a lean, austere, and almost Old World profile, tons better on Day 2...benefits from a long decant. Watch out for sediment! (1847 views)

2014 Wind Gap Wines Syrah Sonoma Coast

The addition of the Solas Vineyard (Previously called Walker Vine Hill) and The Timbervine Ranch have given this wine more fruit and charm while retaining that spicy and savory Wind Gap cool climate kick that we all love so much.
Supple aromas of fresh blackberries, earth, black olives, blueberries and a toasty baked bread quality highlight the inviting aromas of this Syrah. With lots of fruit on the palate, the wine is framed with chewy tannins fresh acidity and bucket loads of spicy earth aromas. The addition of the Solas Vineyard has created a Sonoma Coast Syrah that is more ready to drink on release than any of our previous versions.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
