Community Tasting Notes (average 92.7 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 195 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by pmik on 7/19/2023 & rated 92 points: 92- Vinnørd. Very concentrated and warm weathered fruit bomb. While fairly well balanced and great length, still too sweet mouthfeel for me (580 views)
Tasted by cuculan on 1/16/2023 & rated 94 points: Decanted two hours. Still full of fruit. Alcohol muted. Singing. (898 views)
Tasted by Ex-Ray on 10/7/2022 & rated 93 points: Still dark garnet, minimal translucency, a hint of amber edge. Pronounced but complex aroma of dark fruits and subtle charred wood, but some prune notes. On the palate, still very full-bodied with some heat. Lots of fruit and flavor, big but smooth, but the prune notes are creeping in. The finish is extremely long and quite hot. While still very enjoyable (great with grilled flank steak), it's now starting on the down side and should be consumed in the next year.

Tasted by Bob Grossman on 1/28/2022 & rated 92 points: I am not glad I waited so long to drink this wine, but am not displeased either. The color is subdued burgundy, with no brown edges. The nose has menthol, licorice, plum and vanilla at the end, The wine I would say is slightly past peak, but the flavors noted were of mature dried fruit, plummy and curranty. It went fabulously with lamb and a mint sauce that emphasized the mildly gaminess of the lamb. Don't you love a left hander.
Brother Amarone. (1744 views)
Tasted by Ex-Ray on 7/18/2021 & rated 95 points: Typical Marquis style, blend of cabernet and shiraz. At its peak, nicely blended and balanced. Still dense and rich cassis and earthy shiraz aromas and flavors. Mouth-coating, somewhat hot. Very long aftertaste. No rush to finish these. They'll go on for at least three more years.

Tasted by Hamersly on 2/26/2019 & rated 93 points: Rich, seamless and dense, with big flavors of plums and blackberries. Very fine tannins, hides its 16% alcohol well. Drink over the next 3 years. (2228 views)
Tasted by JS1056 on 12/24/2018 & rated 94 points: This was pretty outstanding.
Dark berry fruit is still pronounced after all these years. But this is not some over extracted wine. There are lots of background flavors including spice and pepper. Very smooth and balanced through a very long finish. The tannins are present give the wine a strong backbone but completely integrated into the whole picture.
I think it is peaking right now but still has a long window. (2313 views)
Tasted by Ex-Ray on 12/20/2018 & rated 96 points: Typical Marquis style, blend of cabernet and shiraz. At its peak, nicely blended and balanced. Still dense and rich cassis and earthy shiraz aromas and flavors. Mouth-coating, somewhat hot. Very long aftertaste. No rush to finish these. They'll go on for at least five more years.

Tasted by Ex-Ray on 7/26/2018 & rated 96 points: Still a very big wine, with powerful aromas and flavors, but it has definitely smoothed out since it was released. Slight brown at the edges. The cabernet component really adds some softness and complexity to the massive shiraz. Fully mature, but I think will easily stay there another few years.

Tasted by JonnyG on 4/21/2018 & rated 75 points: Stewed berries and oak, not the slightest nuance to be found (3065 views)
Tasted by Primordialsoup on 2/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Extracted and plush with blueberry compote and vanilla. Want to pour it on some Haagen Dazs. Velvety texture. 15% alcohol is not hidden but draped in fruit and tannins are fully resolved. A cocktail wine but a tasty one. Reminds me of the likes of a Clio but without the citric edge. (2377 views)
Tasted by nij on 12/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Has improved and mellowed since I last drank in 2009. Beautiful nose of blueberries with a pleasant silky mouth feel, with ripe fruits. Not sure it will get much better.

Paired with Xmas Turkey & Trimmings. (2350 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 6/25/2017 & rated 94 points: The last of my bottles and we went out with a bang. The Cab definitely is an interesting addition, tamping down some of the Syrah exuberance, whilst still allowing some complexity. The wine is still drinking well, with a big mouthfeel, a lot of fruit and with the alcohol under control. Highly enjoyable drink. (3118 views)
Tasted by Ex-Ray on 4/28/2017 & rated 96 points: Still a very big wine, with powerful aromas and flavors, but it has definitely smoothed out since it was released, more so than Carnival of Love. The cabernet component really adds some softness and complexity to the massive shiraz. Fully mature, but I think will easily stay there another five years.

Tasted by Sunny10 on 4/15/2017 & rated 94 points: from magnum, I let it breathed in bottle for 8 hours before consuming. It was an amarone like wine, smells of raisin, eucalyptus, brandy, chocolate cake and cherry, very condensed, juicy with silky tannin. amazing. (2711 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 1/29/2017 & rated 93 points: Intense wine, even at 12 years old, still deep color and deep spicy fruit. Lots of black fruits in the nose and flavor, black currants, blackberries, and black cherries. Long finish. Really good but didn't provide as much overall enjoyment as previous 2014 tasting (2961 views)
Tasted by yiuwing_hk on 5/15/2016 & rated 94 points: Everyone love this during the tasting class. Complex, full body, raisin, jammy, leather, hint of eucalyptus, pepper, oak, long length with balanced finish. (4185 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 3/25/2016 & rated 91 points: Wines 10 years and older (including a 59 Lafleur) (MP's): This is still young with everyone to love/hate about it. Blind, Michael guessed Amarone which was not a bad guess. Inky purple in color. The nose is rasiny with kirsch. Nice, full bodied texture. Lots of rasiny black raspberry fruit. That said, there is a certainly deliciousness to this that is quite enjoyable. Obviously some will hate it, but I really enjoyed it. Very ripe but ageing just fine. (4379 views)
Tasted by knlowery on 2/29/2016 & rated 93 points: As is typical for Mollydooker, this wine is full bodied, rich, with great depth. 11 years old and drinking beautifully. (3455 views)
Tasted by ksmith on 12/19/2015 & rated 89 points: Still a big big wine, even after ten years. Lots of blueberry fruit, blackberries and still some alcohol. A good example of why I stopped buying Aussie wines. (3765 views)

Cabernet-Shiraz Blend

A very popular blend in Australia-particularly from South Australia, where the two varietals work well together. The most famous of these would be the Penfolds Bin 389, considered Australia's most cellared wine. In years gone by this was referred to as "Baby Grange" as some of the wine used barrels from the vintage of Grange.

The 2018 Paternus states only McLaren Vale Shiraz (no Cab Sav).
