Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 10/17/2017: Neophtye Jura producer I am being told. The winery will be named LuLU. 85% CHardonnay and 15% Savuginin. Not hugely under the veil. ANd then I was just told nto under the veil at all. Peachy and apples and then fino sherry. Wow that is great. (858 views)
Tasted by acidqueen on 5/29/2017 & rated 88 points: Nice wine and a bargain at the price. Light gold color. Smells and tastes of apple and apple peel and almond. Some dry Manzanilla sherry flavors as well, although this certainly is not oxidized. Better than the 2011 vintage. Soft mouthfeel but with a bite at the end. You can taste the Chardonnay in the blend, but it isn't Chardonnay for sure. Savagnin as well although I don't know the percentage of each. Good with food. (569 views)

Les Chais du Vieux Bourg

Producer website
In 2014 Les Chais du Vieux Bourg was renamed Lulu Vigneron to mark its conversion to 100% organic viticulture. Ludwig Bindernagel is known to his friends and colleagues as Lulu, so this affectionate nickname was the natural choice for the winery.

Ludwig Bindernagel, from Bavaria, and Nathalie Eigenschenck, from Paris, are relative newcomers to the wine world. Neither of them had any experience or formal education as winemakers prior to opening their own winery, nor did they come from vigneron families.

Ludwig studied viticulture remotely while working as an architect in Paris, and ultimately decided to leave to pursue his passion for viticulture and wine production. Ludwig had fallen in love with Burgundy, and initially hoped to purchase land there. However, due to financial constraints, the family found that the Jura proved significantly better suited for them. This led to the purchase of Les Chais du Vieux Bourg (now Lulu Vigneron) in 2000. Their first vintage came shortly after in 2002.

The original vineyard is about 2.5 hectares in Arlay, in the center of the Jura. It has expanded to include vineyards at Poligny and Etoile and the legendary Château-Chalon. The vineyards are organic and they do not use any insecticides, chemical fertilizers or machinery; they are also in the process of gaining Biodynamic certification. The soil is unique, with two marly layers and a calcareous stratus, which is rich in fossilized oysters. The vines are among some very old stocks and are not genetically modified.

Wine making is dedicated to non-interventionism and an affinity for a traditional style. Fermentations are done at very low temperatures, lengthening the process for up to two years. Production never exceeds 12,800 bottles total per vintage.

2021: "From a general standpoint, whether for white, rosé or red wines, 2021 is a year marked by quality in the Rhône Valley Vineyards. Structured, elegant, fresh and fruity will be the main keywords for this new vintage."

Jura

A petite and relatively obscure wine region in eastern France, between Burgundy and the Swiss border. Its geographical isolation has helped it to remain a rare bastion of traditional winemaking techniques, and today it produces some of the most distinctive wines in the world. Reds from the Jura are often light-bodied, earthy, berried, and reminiscent of the village wines of Burgundy (though here they are made of local grapes like Poulsard and Trousseau). While Chardonnay features widely, the true specialty of the region is the Vin Jaune (“yellow wine”) made from the white Savagnin grape. Cloudy, difficult Vin Jaune is made only in the best vintages, and must be aged for at least six years before being released. As it ages under a layer of yeast, known locally as “voile,” the wine slowly oxidizes, leading to complex aromas and flavors that range from walnut skin to sultana to spices and truffles. Famously long lived it is always sold in dumpy 62 cl bottle - the wine lost in production having been taken by les anges.
