Tasted by bcahlbrandt on 1/31/2022 & rated 90 points: I like this wine, but can see where it wouldn't be for everyone. It is definitely not for Cali cab drinkers. It takes a long time to open up, the fruit notes are fairly mild. There is balance between fruit, tannins, and acidity. Oaky and root notes mid-palate and vegetal/herby notes on the finish. (771 views)
Tasted by MatsRahm on 1/31/2022: Drinking really well now! (801 views)
Tasted by Berge65 on 3/25/2020 & rated 90 points: This wine was quite good. I was concerned based on earlier ratings. Maybe just needed some time in the bottle. (1662 views)
Tasted by linkswinelover6549 on 2/26/2020 & rated 89 points: Full bodied, Nice tannins was delicious (1630 views)
Tasted by HarryDola on 11/22/2019 & rated 91 points: Very expressive, well balanced and integrated. Definitely a food wine, smooth and not overpowering so will complement a wide range of foods. (1707 views)
Tasted by Alejandro Niels on 10/19/2018 & rated 90 points: Nice tanins. Full body, more than other duoro wines. Nicely paired with Portuguese porco pretto (1778 views)
Tasted by Cellarseller on 5/28/2018 & rated 87 points: Not one of Xito’s better wines. Balanced, smooth, soft, not memorable. Ok wine but not at $20. (2103 views)
Tasted by ziavino on 5/5/2018 & rated 86 points: PnP, with generic blue fruit and some heat on the nose. Lacks expression on the palate, with a touch of plum and blueberry. Should be $8, not $20. (1512 views)
Tasted by imrblackburn on 4/18/2018: Very smooth, excellent taste ... buy more ! (1504 views)
Tasted by Jwmumm on 3/1/2018 & rated 90 points: Fruity, licorice and plum flavors. Very nice wine. Went well with grilled rosemary pork. Definitely will purchase again! (1448 views)
Tasted by Felipe Condado on 2/17/2018 & rated 88 points: Muito potente em boca, com taninos e acidez bem definidos, ressaltando frutas vermelhas em compota e madeira. Pronuncia seca. Necessário abrir por 1-2 horas antes de beber. (1141 views)
Tasted by macaujames on 2/10/2018 & rated 89 points: 88/89. This is a fresher more compact version of this wine. It has aromas of chalk, blueberries, plums, raspberries and spice. Its medium bodied four square, and solid blue fruits palate has got good acidity. Ends mediumish and a bit unknit. 14%. Has 2 hours aeration. Youthful. (1244 views)
Tasted by Barolo Raymond on 2/2/2018 & rated 89 points: Deep ruby, black core @14% abv. Medium aromas of cherry, wood, sous bois, cedar. Dry, medium-medium(+) acidity, medium ripe integrated tannin, medium(+) alcohol and body. Balanced palate of cherry, licorice, laurel, pepper. Structured and sturdy. Rich and slightly glycerinic texture. Excellent length with lasting finish.
Very good. (987 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 1/8/2018 & rated 89 points: Initially had kind of a Zin like nose, became more grapey, chalky minerality, tea, cinnamon, dark cherry, terrific balance, this is overall very good as have a lot of dry Portugal wines been lately. Decent value overall. (978 views)
Tasted by Vicc3 on 1/2/2018 & rated 86 points: Trevligt vin med en bra balans både i näsan och munnen. Ung frukt, en del fat med en lång fin eftersmak. Presterar otroligt bra för sitt pris. (812 views)
Tasted by whudock on 11/23/2017 & rated 88 points: decent fruit and well balanced, but the wine lacked structure, depth and complexity. Pleasant, but not memorable. Not a great QPR (1118 views)
Tasted by sean7711 on 7/31/2017 & rated 88 points: Overall, good bottle of wine, but probably would not seek out again for the price (~$25). (1979 views)
Tasted by Krassens on 7/27/2017 & rated 87 points: Plums, blueberries, leather, quite expressive. Still young, but enjoyable in its current state nonetheless (though not great). I guess this could be held for some years more and then be enjoyed in a more mature style. (1503 views)
Tasted by LFCHALA on 6/17/2017 & rated 88 points: Very young. Good structure (1693 views)
Tasted by tendring on 4/24/2017 & rated 85 points: Wine Education Service - The Duoro (LSE): Opaque, youthful.
Fruity, flowery nose.
Fruity but disappointing, hesitant, very obvious tannins, very dry, short. (1697 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 3/17/2017 & rated 86 points: Extracted black fruits with obtrusive burned chocolate and coffee. Viscous, but not plush, it's incredibly concentrated to a fault. Perhaps enjoyable with BBQ, but not a lot of pleasure here. (1456 views)

Quinta do Vale Meão

Producer website
In 1877, Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, owner of the largest winemaking estate in the Douro, purchased 300 hectares of virgin land at auction from the Vila Nova de Foz Côa municipality. Her dream was to create a model vineyard from nothing, using for this the vast experience she had acquired throughout a lifetime as a Douro landowner. This ambitious project took eight years to complete, from 1887 to 1895. Sadly, this grand lady’s pleasure in her last and most significant enterprise was of short duration as she died in 1896.

Since then, the estate always remained in the hands of her descendants. In the 1970s, her great-great-great-grandson, Francisco Javier de Olazabal became responsible for its management and he began the long and laborious process of acquiring the shares that belonged to his kin and to other co-owners of the property. In 1994, he and his children became the sole owners of the Quinta. Until then, the grapes from the estate were sold to A.A. Ferreira S.A., the company established by Dona Antónia’s descendants, where they formed the basis of some its finest wines. This connection continued until 1998 when Francisco Javier de Olazabal resigned as Managing Director of A.A. Ferreira S.A. to dedicate himself, together with his oenologist son Francisco de Olazabal y Nicolau de Almeida, to producing, ageing and marketing the wines from the Quinta through a new company, F. Olazabal & Filhos Lda

The Quinta vineyards were subject to a major reconversion and replanting beginning in the 1980s, partly because of the need to replace the vines that were flooded as a result of the building of the Valeira dam. The new vineyards were planted with blocks of single-variety vines, most especially Touriga Nacional, a varietal that until then had practically been abandoned in the Douro because of the low yield and difficulty in cultivating the vine. This varietal has proven to be particularly well suited to the edapho-climateric characteristics of the Upper Douro and it contributes greatly to the quality and originality of the Quinta wines. Their complexity is guaranteed by the careful use of the different types of soil that exist in the Quinta - schistose, granitic and alluvial.
Our aim is to uphold the originality and complexity of our wines by exploring, to the utmost, the combination of the different traditional Douro varietals grown in separate blocks in the vineyards and the different styles that result from the geological variations of our soil.

We also give preference to combining traditional winemaking methods in lagares with modern technologies. This is why we restored and totally re-equipped the centuries-old Adega dos Novos winery, taking care to preserve its fine architectural features and recover the imposing stone treading tanks.

The Adega da Barca Velha wine lodge, reserved exclusively as a warehouse for Port, was reconstructed in 2007.
