Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com on 6/10/2023 & rated 90 points: Well developped now, at age 8 and a half. Fruit driven nose, still a bit one-dimensional. The taste has evolved a bit, barbera-fruit but some complexity as well. A last few tannins hang on. Almost fully developped, wil stay around longer without any problem (but not in my cellar this is my last one). (426 views)
Tasted by PaulusLoZebra on 7/4/2022 & rated 92 points: Another lovely bottle, this (L3616) is in a great place right now. This is a big, extracted style, with 15% ABV, but the wine has a lot of acidity to support it. Dark fruit and sweet fruit aromas and flavors. Not much aromatic complexity but deep, satisfying flavors. Very nice for cocktails or for dinner, very good QPR. (1002 views)
Tasted by Krassens on 8/3/2021 & rated 91 points: In a fine state right now, with still intense acidity and dense fruit. Tannins somewhat silky. Takes an hour or so to open up and profits from being served slightly chilled. (1314 views)
Tasted by Filler on 7/24/2021 & rated 91 points: In a great window! Loved it (1272 views)
Tasted by PaulusLoZebra on 6/10/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted 90 minutes before dinner. Very dark; aromas of sweet dark fruits; sweet, extracted mid-palate, but no obvious oak; very strong acidity; sappy; lip-smacking finale. This is a straightforward wine, not very complex, but it really opened up with air and was slightly better on night two, with the dark fruits more nuanced and with hints of citrus and mint. I liked it a lot, but it was even more popular with my dinner guests! (2190 views)
Tasted by Eriklainen on 3/15/2020: Better day two. Tobacco and sweet cherries emerge. Can probably do some more time. Acid enough. (2016 views)
Tasted by vinotintoahora on 3/1/2020 & rated 90 points: Excellent, belle profondeur, sur des notes de fruits noirs, belle finale. Dégusté avec jambon à l’érable (1833 views)
Tasted by twither on 11/23/2019 & rated 92 points: Refreshing and moderately complex. Very good. (1743 views)
Tasted by mat600 on 11/10/2019 & rated 91 points: Un très beau vin d'une maison de qualité. Des notes de fruits noirs avec une bonne longueur. C'est épicé et le vin possède de la profondeur. 91 sur 100. (1624 views)
Tasted by bags on 5/5/2019: this is really singing and absurdly better than its price. Not deep, but beautifully balanced and fragment. (1539 views)
Tasted by ChateauDutremble on 5/1/2019 & rated 90 points: Nez d'épices, réglisse rouge, vernis à ongle, fruit suret...
Tannins encore présents lui donnant une texture agréable...
Finale moyenne. Un vin bien structuré et harmonieux. (1294 views)
Tasted by adamcaldwell on 3/17/2019: Balanced Barbera. (1455 views)
Tasted by True Viking on 10/19/2018: The bottle spontaneously exploded....never got to taste it (1750 views)
Tasted by Patrik Sjödin on 5/5/2018 & rated 89 points: Balanserad och följsam. För mig som inte kan druvan oväntat djup i smaken och helt i min smak när man vill ha ngt trevligt och lite mindre bombigt vin (2278 views)
Tasted by Wulffila on 3/3/2018 & rated 88 points: Very nice, but I’ll probably wait a few years until I pop the next bottle... (2052 views)
Tasted by bags on 11/19/2017: definitely serious juice, but I should have decanted it. (2315 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 11/13/2017: Until 1998 this was a single cru, then the laws changed, then they changed back and then in 2008 they started blending two vineyards. There is a 1949 planting in here and then a little bit of something else. The idea here is a Barbera treated like a Barolo. Although they use new oak on this and not on the Barolos.

Very serious Barbera here. The lushiousness that coats the mouth but still great acidity. The soul of the wine is Bricco de Viole - hence the violets on the label. Tasty and fresh. Quite fine. (2482 views)
Tasted by matt182 on 10/15/2017 & rated 92 points: Wow, was not expecting a profile like that. Deep ruby-purple with blueberry, black cherry and balsam notes. Precise and vibrant, this has nice freshness and nice spices persisting notes. (2078 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 7/15/2017 & rated 91 points: Lovely concentrated cherry nose tilting towards liqeur, cinnamon and a touch of alcohol fumes. Fine depth and concentration paired with very good acidity and tannin, which remarkably hides the 15% alcohol somehow. Good ageing potential as well. I'm generally not a fan of Barbera wines that I have mostly found to heavy but this may be an exception. 91-92p (2043 views)
Tasted by nellie.ladouceur@videotron.ca on 4/22/2017 & rated 93 points: The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. (1669 views)

G.D. Vajra

Producer Website

The Vajra family has quietly amassed a serious collection of vineyards that make them one of Piedmont’s larger, family-owned estates, something they have accomplished while maintaining the already high level of their entry-level wines. Every wine in the range is absolutely delicious and full of personality. I can’t recommend these new releases highly enough. Antonio Galloni

Barbera

Varietal character (Appellation America)
Varietal character (Wikipedia German)
Varietal character (Wikipedia English)
Barbera is a red wine variety, originally from Italy, which is best known as the second-most important Piedmontese variety after Nebbiolo. The wines made of this grape are mainly the everyday drinking wines of the region. The main appellations producing Barbera are Asti and Alba.

Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia. The wines of Barbera were once simply "what you drank while waiting for the Barolo to be ready." With a new generation of wine makers, this is no longer the case. The wines are now meticulously vinified, aged Barbera gets the name "Barbera Superiore" (Superior Barbera), sometimes aged in French barrique becoming "Barbera Barricato", and intended for the international market. The wine has bright cherry fruit, a very dark color, and a food-friendly acidity.

Alba

Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Roero

Alba is a town and comune of Piedmont, Italy, in the province of Cuneo. It is considered the capital of the hilly area of Langhe, and is famous for the white truffle, peach and wine production. Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
