 Tasted by KerryKirkham on 4/14/2024: Beautifully composed of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot — aged 12 months in 40% new oak. A cornucopia of ripe fruit—juicy red cherries, sweet dark berries, and plums. So fresh and clean. Spice box, rose, and violet add touches of feminine intrigue and pure elegance. I absolutely love this wine and bought two bottles immediately after tasting it. Ready to drink now but will age gracefully over the next decade or so. (2615 views)

Beautiful bouquet. Needs more time to soften, but drinking well now. Solid value for a Left Bank Bordeaux. 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. (2291 views)

On the nose, there is a very prominent green, herbal note in the beginning from initial pop and pour - green peppers, forest floor, wet earth, tobacco, and vanilla. After half an hour in the glass, the fruits start singing - blackberries, cassis, black cherries, and plums.

Medium bodied and acidic on the palate with prominent green herbal notes mixed with earth and leather - green peppers, wet earth, leather, black tea, some oak and vanilla presence, blackberries and cassis. Tannins are somewhat grippy with a medium peppery finish.

Overall, this is quite enjoyable and delicious, and is quite approach at its young age. (2360 views)

The nose is fruit forward and really pops out of the glass with cherry, blackcurrant and plums. On the palate, blackcurrant, tobacco, spice, touch of menthol. Good acidity with smooth tannins. This can easily take more cellar time. If you can get some at a reasonable price it's great but I've seen some place abuse on prices after the Château got more popularity lately. (3018 views)

But very classical. On the palate the wine is dry with pronounced but fine tannins. The lively acidity is almost more prominent. Full-bodied, but lots of freshness. The pronounced intensity of the fruit is balanced by lovely grip and structure. The medium to long finish is dominated by secondary (cedar, smoke, chocolate) and tertiary (leather, tobacco, plum chutney) aromas. Drinking very well rigtht now. (4920 views)

Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & cassis with overtones of earthy/dusty & herbal notes, floral notes, herbs, anise, spices, minerals, & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blackberries & plums with herbs, minerals, spices & a hint of vanilla/oak. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but should develop further with additional aging at which time it may merit a higher score (92+). Very juicy/acidic on the palate but not overwhelmingly so. Notes of tarragon, cinnamon, licorice, cedar. Fine tannins making this a very complete package and enjoyable with the steak frites I had. (4360 views)

This wine seemed to have entered its drinking window.
Plenty of black fruit on the nose. On the palate there’s plenty of fruit with cherries and blackberry, some leather and cedar. The tannins are nicely resolved and it has a long finish.
Had intended to keep some for a second day but of the 5 wines we opened - including a highly rated Napa crowd pleaser - this was the most popular.

While it will undoubtedly improve with age with is arguably the best Cantemerle vintage and will be even better in a few years.

Full-bodied smooth wine with well-integrated oak and alcohol. Initial acidity blew off a bit with the decant. Deep rich plum fruit on the palate, light smoke notes and hints of dried cocoa and cedar. Finish was a bit short, but overall fit very much into the profile of a classic bordeaux. (3902 views)

For that, plus the need for an hour or two of air to open up the better qualities in this wine, best to decant. Translucent red in color, the nose is full of crisp, bright red berries and cherry cola. Ripe black raspberries and bright, lively red berry fruits marry nicely with the red cherry core on the palate. Tasty and fresh. Did I mention red fruits yet? This is not quite mature, but already very approachable. Really nice value in this bottle of wine. (4222 views)

Well-integrated fine tannins. Strong high notes and persistent and elegant fruity finish with a hint of truffle and blueberry. A lot of acid, like an Italian wine on first sip - will be opening the next one in ~2 years!

Missing the concentration and in your face "wow" factor that would warrant a higher score. But at this price, do get some. (4569 views)

Palate is very fresh, good length and strength from entry to the medium-bodied structure. Fine tannins providing good support to the phenolic elements. Finish is soft with lingering notes. This needs an hour of decanting for the wine to open and gain intensity on the nose and palate. 91-92 pts. (4483 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Haut-Médoc

Read more about Haut Medoc and its wines Long-standing fame The legally created division into Médoc and Haut-Médoc dates from 1935. But as long ago as 1815 a Chartrons broker, whose word carried weight, spoke of great red wines in the Haut-Médoc, so recognizing the high quality successfully achieved by this region's growers in the eighteenth century. The same Bordeaux broker revealed that the business world of the Chartrons and the great Bordeaux proprietors had established a sort of league-table of the parishes in which the vine-growing communes of today's Haut-Médoc appellation showed up well.

The Haut-Médoc appellation stretches over some thirty seven miles from north to south, from Saint-Seurin de Cadourne to Blanquefort. Within this area, certain zones produce wines exclusively with the Haut-Médoc appellation. It has terroirs of remarkable quality. And although we may note a certain predominance of layers of gravel (essentially Garonne gravel) from the Quaternary, all these sites are characterized by their wide diversity. Today in the southernmost communes of the appellation, the suburbs of Bordeaux, numerous vineyards which existed at the beginning of the twentieth century have disappeared, victims of urban expansion. But the vines live on... because man has retained his devotion to them.

The astonishing variety of different terroirs, the result of the very extent of the area, explains the diversity of Haut-Médoc wines, a fact which is rare within one and the same appellation.
But, over and above the differences, linked to this mosaic of climatic and geological influence, all these wines have the same family traits of character.
Alert and lively, full-bodied without being too powerful, and harmoniously balanced, they acquire a rare bouquet over the years.

In order to have the right to the Haut-Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Blanquefort, Le Taillan, Parempuyre, Le Pian, Ludon, Macau, Arsac, Labarde, Cantenac, Margaux, Avensan, Castelnau, Soussans, Arcins, Moulis, Listrac, Lamarque, Cussac, Saint-Laurent de Médoc, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac, Saint-Estèphe, Vertheuil, Saint-Seurin de Cadourne "excluding all the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (48 hectolitres per hectare).
