Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 60 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 4/27/2024 & rated 93 points: Still deep ruby in color, this medium-bodied Pinot remains effusive of black and red fruits that are accented with mulling spices, smoke, cocoa and leather. The oak and tannins have fully integrated and the alcohol (14.9%) continues to fly under the radar. Solid in the middle and long on the finish, this has aged very little since last being tasted 12/8/2021; it will last longer than previously projected. Popped and poured, only thirty minutes of air was required for this bottle to fully strut its stuff. Drink now-2030. (180 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 12/7/2023 & rated 93 points: Ruby red in color. 14.9% ABV. Pretty nose of red fruits, cloves and flowers. Medium body with nice acidity. Light, elegant and incredibly refined. Cherry, cranberry, pomegranate and earth on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Soft, supple Pinot Noir that is absolutely delicious. Best over the next 2-4 years. (402 views)
Tasted by Dine&Vine on 5/25/2023 & rated 93 points: Just too good to not drink another bottle. Just phenomenal wine making here. Finesse to create such a flavorful Pinot with cola, spice and dark berries but with a sexy balanced body to match.

So good. Drink or hold. (398 views)
Tasted by Josch48 on 5/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Opaque black cherry color with scarlet at the rim, giving way to blood orange. The nose is a deep tunnel of black and red fruits, that are concentrated, almost candied.
The velvety and viscous mouthfeel conveys vivid, dense fruit, with supportive acidity, tannin, and the hefty 14.9% alcohol by volume. The brilliant yet opulent flavors persist throughout the stages of palate appreciation, and linger on the long finish.
Tom Dehlinger manages to create, through expert farming and winemaking skills, a California Pinot Noir that combines the finesse of a grand cru Burgundy with the depth of warm climate grown grapes.
A true Master of Vinification. (468 views)
Tasted by Dine&Vine on 4/17/2023 & rated 92 points: Smooth and flavorful RR valley Pinot drinking spot on right now. Cola, strawberry and spice. (384 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 4/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Fresh and lively, with that elegant ripe blackberry/strawberry / sea foamy element... Minerally and nice caressing fruit. Exotoc spices on the nose. (550 views)
Tasted by 6831 on 4/2/2023 & rated 92 points: This took quite some time to open up but after 3hr started showing some nice aromas of earth and forest berry. Blackberry, spice, cranberry and sweet herb carry a full mid-palate through to a deep finish with good length. Toasted oak notes on the close. Ready to go (335 views)
Tasted by 6831 on 8/20/2022 & rated 92 points: Beautifully and generously fragrant. Supple mid-palate showing dark cherry, plum, spice,
forest and pepper notes. Glides into a rich finish with tart berry and hints of toasted oak.
In a good place now but no hurry on this one (437 views)
Tasted by ocwineo on 7/31/2022 & rated 92 points: From magnum-well balanced and aging well (372 views)
Tasted by Sperls on 7/12/2022 & rated 91 points: Everything in nice balance in terms of the red cherry and cola fruit, tannin and acidity. The below notes do a nice job. Should have a number of years of life left in it. (368 views)
Tasted by mazik on 3/14/2022 & rated 87 points: Love the fruit, raspberry and snozzberry, and the baking spice and leather is now in evidence, quite oaky too, but the bitter finish is less than pleasant, is it only me that notices this. (479 views)
Tasted by jweedin on 12/11/2021 & rated 92 points: Great wine. Lost some fruit but more complex and very tasty. Very typical dehlinger goldridge (500 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 12/8/2021 & rated 93 points: Despite all bottles in my cellar being sourced from the winery upon release, this particular specimen is definitely darker in color than those previously described. That said, the tasting experience is otherwise not materially different from that of 6/16/2020. Deep ruby in color and medium-bodied, it continues to ooze black and red fruit that is flanked with mulling spices, smoke, cocoa and leather. The tannins are plentiful and silky-textured, the oak well-proportioned and the alcohol (listed as 14.9%) surprisingly tame. Solid in the middle and lengthy on the back end, this is yet another Dehlinger Pinot that will have substantial longevity. Drink now-2027. (679 views)
Tasted by yeti575rider on 11/21/2021 & rated 92 points: Just a fun wine. Not too big, not complex, but good flavor without being heavy. I’ve moved away from this style but can still appreciate when done right. (450 views)
Tasted by Cmainardi on 9/26/2021 & rated 92 points: Big Pinot. With friends who thought it was Syrah. Fundamentally sounds, however. Crowd pleaser (511 views)
Tasted by winejnky on 4/6/2021 & rated 91 points: Fruity yet savory, with a bright, inviting nose and rich, crushed berry flavors. Has a nice mineral edge and spice box notes in the background. (698 views)
Tasted by SeaSmoke on 2/1/2021 & rated 91 points: Notes unchanged from January. (726 views)
Tasted by SeaSmoke on 1/12/2021 & rated 91 points: Dark cherries, cocoa, red licorice, and cedar on the nose and palate. Medium tannins with just the right amount of spice. Medium finish. (743 views)
Tasted by mazik on 12/18/2020 & rated 87 points: Fruity on the nose and palate, marionberry leads the dance. Not wildly impressed and certainly glad I paid ~25 rather than ~55. Possibly this will improve with a bit more air. (603 views)
Tasted by SeaSmoke on 11/11/2020 & rated 91 points: Notes are unchanged to earlier this month. (600 views)
Tasted by SeaSmoke on 11/1/2020 & rated 91 points: Dark cherries, cocoa, red licorice, and cedar on the nose and palate. Medium tannins with just the right amount of spice. Medium finish. (575 views)
Tasted by SeaSmoke on 10/25/2020 & rated 91 points: Similar notes to October 2020. (463 views)
Tasted by SeaSmoke on 10/9/2020 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 45 minutes. Dark cherries, cocoa, red licorice, and cedar on the nose and palate. Medium tannins with just the right amount of spice. Medium finish. (527 views)
Tasted by ewsds on 8/4/2020 & rated 93 points: Over two years ago I said I thought this was ready to drink with a brief decant, but now over two years later, I would have to say the same thing. This has held up remarkably well (at 55 degrees) and still has good structure and balance and an excellent darker-fruit profile and a lengthy finish. Bravo Dehlinger. (781 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 6/16/2020 & rated 93 points: Medium ruby and teeming with black and red fruit, this Pinot remains a youthful expression of the Goldridge section of Dehlinger's Estate Vineyard. Medium-bodied, freshly acidic and with silky-textured tannins, it adds notes of mulling spices, smoke, cocoa and leather. Despite being listed as a lofty 14.9%, the alcohol is well-woven (which can also be said for the wine's oak). Solid in the middle and lengthy on the back end, this is still quite early in its drinking window. Well-cellared bottles will last longer than previously projected. Drink now-2027. (921 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
