Community Tasting Notes (average 92.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 35 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Barsacpinci on 4/20/2024 & rated 92 points: PnP. This one didn't last too long. THe table drank this one up in a hurry. Pencil shavings very evident to me. With plenty of dark fruits (402 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 11/26/2023 & rated 91 points: Decanted for almost two hours. Aromas of blackberry, currant, black cherry, iron and mesquite. Flavors of cherry, iron, mineral and cranberry. Ends with a 20+ second finish with iron notes. Smooth tannins and lots of cab franc character. (1212 views)
Tasted by ElAzul on 9/14/2023 & rated 93 points: Have you ever made a mistake that turned out well? I opened this by mistake and glad I did. I meant to open the 2018 but here we are with the still delicious 2016. Love this wine. Nose bursts from the glass with black and red fruit. Even after 48 hours open it is still beautifully aromatic. Dark brooding fruit, ripe acidity and a luscious yet delicate finish. Lovely with both red meat and chocolate maybe thanks to the 15% cab franc? Just a wonderful St. Emilion with the merlot supplying cherry and raspberry fruit and the cab franc additional structure. You can wait 5 years before it fully matures but if you decant and pour back and forth a few times you can enjoy today. (1431 views)
Tasted by epokal on 8/4/2023 & rated 92 points: Color is deep red with slight bricking on the rim. Some sediment in the bottle. Nose has oak spice, dark chocolate and some earthy aromas. The palate is muscular, full bodied and well oaked with aromas of leather, spices, dark berries and dark chocolate. Wine manages to stay balanced despite being quite powerful. (1500 views)
Tasted by ElAzul on 5/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Beautiful cork with zero run, in my cellar since issue. My favorite St Emilion for quality and value, never disappoints. The mostly merlot fruit supplies wonderful dark fruit and cassis fragrant notes and the palate is rich and complex. The oaky tannins are evident but well integrated with the fruit which to me is mostly blackberry but with some faint red plum notes. Love it and especially tasty after 24 hours open and decanted. Lovely wine now and has much more and development in bottle in its future. (1891 views)
Tasted by JGinMO on 3/23/2023 & rated 91 points: Still young obviously but already drinking very well, like the backbone and dark fruit the 15% cab franc provides. (2108 views)
Tasted by Jaber on 3/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Belle bouteille, tout en fruit, tannins assouplis, futur prometteur! (1688 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 1/15/2023 & rated 92 points: Dark garnet in color. Full, fragrant & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & cassis with overtones of earthy/dusty/gravel & floral notes, spices, tobacco, cocoa, herbs & a hint of cedar in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, plush, ripe fruit flavors of sweet cherries, mulberries & dark cassis with spices, herbs, minerals, cocoa & a hint of oak/vanilla. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present but has the fruit & structure to develop further with additional aging at which time, it may merit a higher score (93+). (1916 views)
Tasted by SirJ on 11/20/2022 & rated 93 points: Tonight a favorite from the right bank, Chateau Grand Mayne 2016. Wonderful aroma from Merlot, dark plump blackberries, available with dry fine tannins. A wonderful wine that will be even better in 3 - 5 years. Drink or hold. (2086 views)
Tasted by FamousWine on 11/13/2022: The 2016 Grand Mayne is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc which were picked from October the 10th to October the 25th. It was matured in 60% new oak for 18 months. I gave it two hours' decant. The fresh nose expresses gourmet scents of blackberries and crushed raspberries associated with a discreet floral touch as well as powerful vanilla and cedar. The empty glass reveals a dash of balsamic and some delicately truffled notes. The palate is medium to full-bodied with wonderful velvety tannins. I'm impressed by the perfect balance between concentration, freshness and purity of the fruit. It's a beautiful work with plenty of fleshy blackberries and strawberries, pencil lead and spice. It finishes very very long, almost endless, on captivating and elegant notes of tobacco, vanilla and earth. Focused and so harmonious: such a brilliant wine from the right bank! Still under the influence of oak, it's going to need a long time of bottle age. I'm already looking forward to revisit it in 2030.

Tasted by texaswinelover on 9/16/2022: Enjoyed. Modern styled, dark fruit, earthy notes, tobacco, tar, ash. Tannins significant but fine. Will last a long time. Opened too early but I needed something that would go with dinner and last a few days in the fridge, (1724 views)
Tasted by NickA on 8/13/2022 & rated 91 points: Is this a tiny bit corked, or is it just quite oaky on the nose? Sweet vanilla, plummy fruit, dark meat verging on graphite, very perfumed and spicy. Enjoyable structure and potential. (1910 views)
Tasted by jonboy74 on 2/11/2022 & rated 91 points: Amazing fruit and floral on the nose at PnP. Still super young. Will update after full decant (2451 views)
Tasted by SirJ on 1/14/2022 & rated 93 points: Had to try Grand Mayne 2016 from Saint-Émilion. What a fruit, classic Merlot dominated wine from the right bank. After 3 hours in a carafe, dark fruit, wonderful tannins, cigar box, pencil, this will be incredibly good in at least 5 years. So glad I bought myself more bottles of this wine. You who can, buy from this vintage. (2199 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 4/3/2021 & rated 94 points: Quite youthful as you would expect, still it is difficult not to be impressed by the concentration, ripeness, elegance, freshness and energy here. Parked on the corner of elegance, freshness and opulence, the fruit shows good purity, length and vibrance. Kuch of what the wine has to offer is held in reserve at the moment. The wine be best after 2026. (5485 views)
Tasted by jacobnheeter on 12/24/2020 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit jam, cassis, and anise on the nose. Good acidity, adequate tannins. Vanilla and smoke join the fruit on the palate. Medium + finish (3230 views)
Tasted by HorstPeak on 2/13/2020 & rated 93 points: Very nice, but to early, wait 5 years (4153 views)
92+ (3981 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 11/21/2019 & rated 93 points: This has balance, class, power, and legs to age. Very Pauillac like...HOLD for at least 5 years. This is good value! (4233 views)
Tasted by littlefoot on 11/1/2019 & rated 93 points: Smelled like a Spring Mtn cab so I immediately liked it. Kirsch, plum and violet nose that wears its oak like a Pashmina, and fine tannins that are also ripe in a very Califorina-like way. We drank the decanted bottle over several hours and didn't see the tannins emerge further. (2761 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/21/2019 & rated 94 points: With truffle notes to kick this off, the wine is plush, polished, pure and fresh. Medium/full bodied with sweet, fresh, dark cherries at its core, and soft, elegant textures on the palate, the wine needs a few years in the bottle for everything to fill out. (3310 views)
Tasted by FransS on 2/25/2019 & rated 95 points: The 2016 vintage UGCB tasting in Amsterdam 2/25/2019; 2/25/2019-2/27/2019 (Amsterdam): Not as exotic as the '15, more with its legs on the ground; lovely concentrated, smooth, very good fresh backbone. (2747 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 2/25/2019 & rated 91 points: Amsterdam UGCB Tasting and Winemakers' Dinner (Beurs van Berlage / Café De Klepel): Light touch of animale and evolution on the nose, nice palate, crushed red berries, firm but creamy tannins, good length. (2978 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 2/25/2019 & rated 91 points: UCGB tasting Bordeaux 2016 (Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam.): Creamy cherries, some sweetness, a firm dose of oak which is not integrated yet. For today 91+ (3071 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 2/11/2019 & rated 94 points: They have been on fire here lately and the 2016 continues that trend. Silky, plush, polished, pure and fresh, this finesse driven wine offers good concentration and lift, with ripe, sweet, dark red fruits and licorice from start to finish. (3060 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Saint Emilion Grat Classified Growth, Classified Growths, Grands Crus Classes, GCC

In 1954, while the "Graves" growths had just published their own classification, the wine syndicate of Saint-Emilion, composed by wine growers, brokers and wine traders with the approval of the INAO - Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (A.O.C), decided to work on a classification for the wines of Saint Emilion. Initially, four grades were defined. These were reduced to two - First Great Classified Growth (A and B) and Great Classified Growth - in 1984.

As of Medoc's 1855 historical grading, the Saint-Emilion Great Classified Growth classification is not only based on qualitative criteria by tasting the wines on a ten years period previous to the assessment, but also on commercial considerations such as:
- sales price levels
- national and international commercial distribution
- the estate's reputation on the market

Properties who don't manage to join the club of about sixty Classified Growths are given the denomination of Great Growth ("Grand Cru"), while the remaining wineries of the A.O.C are simply reported as "Saint-Emilion". It is to be noted that the owners must officially apply to appear in the official classification. Thus for example the famous Chateau Tertre-Roteboeuf, whose quality and reputation would easily justify to be listed among the First Great Classified Growths, does not appear here by the will of its owner, François Mitjaville.

The Saint-Emilion Great Growth classification was revised in 1969, 1985, 1996 and 2006. The only two guaranteed vintage (A.O.C) who can apply to the classification are the "Saint-Emilion Grand Cru" and "Saint-Emilion" areas.

By grading 61 properties, the 2006 revision confirmed many growths from the former classification, but also caused a number of surprises and a few inevitable disappointments. Many observers thought that the impressive progression of Perse's Chateau Pavie since 1998 would be rewarded by an upgrade into the First Great Classified Growths (A) category, but finally such was not the case.

Among the estates promoted to the First Great Classified Growths B category are Chateau Troplong-Mondot and Pavie-Macquin, whose efforts made since the Nineties fully justify their new grade. It should be noted that no First Great Classified Growth was relegated to the lower Great Classified Growth class.

Promoted growths from the status of Great Growth ("Grand Cru") to Great Classified Growth ("Grand Cru Classe") are: Chateaux Bellefont-Belcier, Destieux, Fleur Cardinale, Grand Corbin, Grand Corbin-Despagne and Monbousquet.

The demoted growths from the status of Great Classified Growth to Great Growth are: Chateaux Bellevue, Cadet Bon, Faurie de Souchard, Guadet Saint-Julien, La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Belivier), La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Moueix), Lamarzelle, Petite Faurie de Soutard, Tertre Daugay, Villemaurine and Yon-Figeac. If the recent samples of some of the above mentioned properties may justify their current downgrade, there are great chances that estates like Bellevue, Tertre Daugay or Yon-Figeac will be upgraded to their previous rankings by the next revision in 2016 as the progresses noted after 2000, but not entering in the range of vintages (1993 - 2002) appointed for the criteria of selection for the 2006 classification, are noticable.

The two following estates have completely disappeared from the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classification: Curé-Bon-la-Madeleine (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Canon) and La Clusière (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Pavie).

Finally, no estate considered as "garagiste" has integrated the classification. Valandraud, Mondotte, Le Dome, Bellevue-Mondotte or Magrez-Fombrauge have, for the least, the potential to be ranked as Great Classified Growths. In sight of the very fine quality reached by the above mentioned estates in recent vintages as well as all the innovative wine making methods used by the "garagistes", it remains to be seen whether the authorities will dare to cross the line in 2016..?
