Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by hrazdiiv on 10/29/2017 & rated 93 points: I'm going to score this bottle quite a bit higher than most because I think it has a lot of complex elements that recall great wines from other parts of the world. Displaying a medium crimson in the glass, the nose offers something other than a Napa Cabernet: wobbly, even slightly fortified notes of stewed prunes, chocolate and burnt embers come at you, reminiscent of an Amarone or even a Barolo. The mouth is full bodied but muscular with notes of tar and cedar with medium but pleasant tannins to grip into the finish. Opened 2hours+ undecanted and didnt fade suggesting to me it's still got some life ahead. Very interesting, very well made, good to bring to a blind tasting. (1895 views)
Tasted by Pluecht on 9/10/2016 & rated 92 points: Drank quite well. Cork shot decanted and consumed. Jammy. Fruit still there Quite nice (2337 views)
Tasted by Tarpon222 on 11/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Excellent. Soft but with some backbone still, nice nose.... This has aged gracefully. One more to go! (3327 views)
Tasted by Pluecht on 11/29/2013 & rated 92 points: Really quite surprising how nice this wine has held up. Decanted and drank really nice. Medium bodied, fruit still there. Would expect this one to go a few more years. (3825 views)
Tasted by chris_3 on 11/7/2012 & rated 90 points: Delicious, beautifully aged and balanced. Lots of flavor, dried fruit medium tannins. (4365 views)
Tasted by Marshmallowman on 7/22/2011 & rated 89 points: Good wine but STEAK was great!!! last one, have one Moresoli left that is a little old. (3778 views)
Tasted by pickhardt on 6/26/2011 & rated 88 points: Nice, but on the downhill slope I think. Nice age flavors, but fruit is fading a bit. (3600 views)
Tasted by chris_3 on 1/4/2011 & rated 90 points: A real surprise at how well and deliciously it has aged. Did not taste in the least like a napa cab but lots of fruit with nicely balanced oak and tannins. Not sure what fruit at this point maybe plum but definitely not the usual dark fruit of a normal cab. (2581 views)
Tasted by BaltoWine on 9/20/2010: At least in our cellar, the 2001 is past its prime; by comparison, a recently-consumed 1998, surprisingly, has held up better and could still lay down a while. Still a great wine, just time to drink whatever's left... Napa Valley in a bottle. Wish we could still just swing by to pick up cases... or even get it shipped -- stupid MD liquor laws! (2393 views)
Tasted by RJandGB on 6/14/2010 & rated 95 points: Our last bottle. It is still drinking nicely. Nice oak, great fruit. Changed but stayed lovely over the course of dinner (ribeye). We opened 10 cab/blends from 2001 amnd this was in the top 4. As much as I have liked the Morisoli cab over the years, Preston vineyard has more staying power. (2134 views)
Tasted by Black Pearl on 10/6/2009 & rated 91 points: One bottle was "bad", very tannic, very acidic, no fruit. Second bottle was solid, nice fruit on the nose, but leaning towards a dark, mineralry base and finish. Drank up the last bottle, don't think it will get any better at this point. (2311 views)
Tasted by deltacop on 9/6/2008 & rated 91 points: Opened last night and really enjoyed. This has several years left but is drinking really nice now. This was a gift so I don't have any more. Disappointing. Nice nose, smooth taste. I'll have the other half tonight. (2420 views)
Tasted by jonwill on 5/31/2008 & rated 91 points: I was initially concerned because this bottle had not been stored properly throughout it's life, but opened today and it was still kicking. Nose was open upon popping the cork, ripe, darker fruit scents. Lots of fruit upfront with a nice concentration with oak and cigar box on the back end. Nice long lasting finish with cassis and a lingering oak. Probably drinking at peak or close to it. (2436 views)
Tasted by matthen on 6/4/2007 & rated 91 points: Closed at first, this wine opened up after 15 minutes in the glass. Aromas of spice, tobacco, and dark fruits lead to a rich and concentrated wine. The flavors of mint, spice, plum and currant have a very nice finish that lasts for 20 seconds. The tannins are still present, but are integrated and unobtrusive. The winery says that the optimum drinking window for this wine is 2007 to 2008. I tend to agree. Give it a year if you have bottles or call the winery and ask for their library wines. For $35 this is worth searching out. (2579 views)
Tasted by GolferChris on 8/11/2006 & rated 93 points: July Wine Tasting, 17 wines, Crystal Lake, IL (NW Suburbs Chicago, Crystal Lake, IL): Tied fo r WOTN with Joel Gott Dillian Ranch Zinfandel. Excellent example of the quality of California Cabs coming from Rutherford AVA. Beatuifully oaked with red fruit and cocoa on the nose. In the mouth, ample tannins balance out the fruit and the finish gives you the "Rutherford Dust" that the really good wines from this region always deliver. Available only through the winery, which is a shame for those who don't get to Napa. (4796 views)
Tasted by archer752000 on 3/19/2006 & rated 88 points: V. Sattui Cabernets: Fairly tannic and closed. Showing good fruits and nice finish, but lacking in complexity. (3768 views)
Tasted by Wine Apostle on 11/24/2005 & rated 91 points: Still has quite a biy left in the tank. Fairly tannic but opens up after about twenty minutes in the glass. (3216 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
