Tasted by KingSlacker999 on 4/26/2024: Very perfume driven nose, somewhat in an odd place though, the fruit seemed riper than expected. Probably needs several more years at minimum. (787 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 4/21/2024 & rated 94 points: We tasted this late in the evening after many wines and my taste buds were already dull, which is a shame, as this showed still very promising. Weightless, very cool, very fresh with lots of minerality, black tea and rose petals at the core and the fruit only in the background. While it was quite enjoyable and was drinking already on a 93/94pts level, it certainly has more upside in the future. (959 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 3/24/2024 & rated 95 points: Another beautiful bottle of this after the 2011 was flawed (again!). Pure, lifted, full of elegance, not much to add to my last tasting notes. This could use another 2-3 years to open up some more, but already amazing. (1445 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 3/23/2024 & rated 94 points: Tasted at a social event. Clearly very early days here. Nice red berry fruit, sublime mineral note of coal, fleshy and meaty and signature rose water form a classic profile. Precise and delineated. Rather grainy tannins on the palate, but well integrated. Incredibly fresh with a cooler fruit profile. This probably needs another 15 years or so but should be fantastic then. (1260 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 1/23/2024: Makan til elegant Barolo skal du lete lenge etter.
Lysende fruktkvalitet.
Dog denne flasken var hakket for tight.
Trenger et par år til for å folde ut vingene. (2126 views)
Tasted by lovanc@outlook.com on 12/24/2023: Beautiful wine that is rich and silky smooth. Red fruit and hints of tar. Unfortunately was edged out by the much more inexpensive Barbaresco that was also on the table (1725 views)
Tasted by ShakinSwedens on 11/27/2023: Opened a couple of hours before serving and initially muted but with time and served in conterno sensory glasses with Tagliolini Ai Tartufi Bianchi it came into its own. That trademark silky mouthfeel, Barolo typical nose of roses and tar and terracotta, and a long heavenly finish. A little eucalyptus. This wine has plenty of development in store for those that choose to hold, but for me this vintage is one for drinking now and over the next 5 years. A pleasure as it should be to drink such exceptional Barolo ‘normale’. (2013 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 9/21/2023 & rated 95 points: Very similar tasting note to my last one. This was really opening up with 2 hours in the decanter. Beautifully pure red fruit, almost Burgundian, but also with some darker tones and graphite and tar adding some Barolo stature. Medium+ bodied, elegant, with so much energy and finesse, this is showing some medium+ tannin that is super silky, high acidity and very good length. What a beauty, especially in the context of the vintage. (2420 views)
Tasted by Klugi Wine on 5/10/2023 & rated 93 points: A CORAVIN glas today.
The wine needed 15-30 minutes to open up. Its a more refined, cooler bouquet with sour cherries, dark chocolate (85%), rose pedals and some mint.
The palate is refreshing with a very delicate and fine tannin structure. Its medium bodied and not in your face but beautifully balanced. A highlight in a complicated vintage. (2886 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 2/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 2014.
Begynner å åpne seg nå.
Elegant og forførende.
Bra frukt her.
Kan åpnes nå, eller helst ligge litt lenger.
Strålende vin. 93p (3138 views)
Tasted by carstenf on 2/17/2023 & rated 94 points: We loved it and for sure a Barolo with class. The nose and taste was wonderfull. Very fine now but a long life aheard. (2864 views)
Tasted by Robmcl920 on 7/5/2022 & rated 94 points: The '14 Bartolo is a gorgeous young wine that should age very nicely. While I don't have a crystal ball, it reminds me of the 1970, in that it seems on its way to be a bit of a lighter, sweet and caressing Barolo with a core of fresh, sweet red roses and pure red fruits.

The nose was nicely perfumed, although at times a bit closed off, with fresh red roses, sweet red to dark red berry fruits, blood orange, and mint. It's all about the sweet fruit and bursts of fresh red floral aromas. On the palate, the wine is very elegant, with similar pure red berry fruit and fresh red floral tones, not showing a ton of complexity at this point, but beautiful in its purity. The wine is medium in body with highly refined tannins and high acidity.

In terms of ageworthiness, I see the characteristics for this to be a long-lived wine, in terms of the freshness of the flavor profile and acidity. It doesn't seem to be an early drinker. It is no crime to open a bottle, but I'm not sure the '14 is more open than the last bottles I've had of the '13 or '16. (4251 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 12/3/2021 & rated 95 points: This is still young but surprisingly open at this early stage.
Super bright, red fruited and lifted, there are notes of bright red cherries, some cranberries, raspberries, mint, also some minerality of graphite and a touch of tar, some crushed rose petals and violets. It‘s medium+ bodied, with excellent mid-palate persistence, it has high acidity and medium-high tannin that is incredibly silky. Very long finish with excellent tension, beautiful freshness and superb red fruit…
One of the great classics of Barolo in one of the most classic (cold) vintages and the result is absolutely stunning. This is not a fruitbomb or a „competition wine“ by any means. It‘s authentic, cool, old-school but with an extra level of silkiness from the just brilliant wine-making of Maria-Teresa Mascarello. I love this wine. (5193 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/29/2021: Return to Piemonte!; 11/25/2021-12/4/2021 (Castello di Sinio, Alba, other various locations): One of my favorite of the barolo producers perhaps in part because she isn still doing it the very classic method of blending across vineyards to make the very best wine possible for that year. This is all darker cherry and just a bit of spice. Decanted and we finished the bottle during the meal. Drinking nicely. (5205 views)
Tasted by rlove on 11/20/2021 & rated 93 points: Youthful but delicious with a perfumed Nebbiolo nose of sweet dark fruit, baking spice, and balsamic notes. Surprisingly open tonight with a velvety texture and fine tannins. Finishes with earth and cinnamon. Very good. (3849 views)
Tasted by Dionysos 1920 on 11/13/2021 & rated 93 points: Bartolo Mascarello e Bruno Giacosa (Restaurant du Théâtre, Monthey): Vin encore jeune, nez fermé, séduisant, épicé, bouche encore tannique, peu expressive, devrait s'ouvrir (4339 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 12/27/2020 & rated 95 points: Not surprisingly, this is still a little closed and tense at this early stage. But it‘s more than just an academic exercise, it‘s opening up a little with some air and providing ample pleasure if you are into cool vintage traditional Barolo.
Super bright and lifted, with notes of bright red cherries, some cranberries, raspberries, some mint, graphite, a touch of tar, some crushed rose petals and violets. It‘s medium+ bodied, with high acidity and incredibly silky medium-high tannin. Long finish with excellent tension an brightness. This seems like the cool-vintage Burgundy version of Bartolo Mascarello. It‘s bright, lifted, super silky and maybe not as structured and layered as the very best vintages but makes up for it with purity, precision and freshness. Love it.
The longer this wine is open, the more I love it. I absolutely adore the house style here... deeply moving wines. (5354 views)
Tasted by Dave Canada on 9/30/2020 & rated 94 points: This is so pretty but still needs some time....
Loads of red flowers, eucalyptus, menthol, spice, tar, cherry and raspberry...

Give it another few years before checking in again. (4663 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 9/21/2020: This one is so pretty and perfumed. There are complex aromatics of red current, raspberry, cherry, dried flowers and wild sage. The palate is lacy. It is engaging and ethereal with beautiful balance and proportion. The finish is quite earthy and it is light on its feet. (4455 views)
Tasted by clayfu on 4/16/2020: has that dark weighty fruit that bartolo exudes. The aromatics are 🔥 sweet baking spice laden fruit. Obviously still young but very delicious (6206 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 11/23/2019: Thanksgiving week in Piemonte; 11/22/2019-11/30/2019 (Milan, Barolo, Alba, Barbaresco): At the Barololand Tasting room. First in the line-up and the aromatics are very pretty here. The palate is not quite as open as the nose would imply, but the structure here is evident - needs time. Red fruited, minerals -tannins still got quite a hold here. (6655 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/23/2019: Piedmont II - better and learnings; 11/23/2019-11/29/2019 (Barolo, Alba, others): I had super unfair expectations for this wine. There was a big Piedmont event the weekend before and many said this was the producer that stood out. But this is the most recent release and those wines were many years old. So this is darker fruits, some mineral, there's a great vibrancy and brightness tot he wine. It's really made to age. There's just this background that maybe with some time you will pick up on elegance, but it's not there yet. So it was nice, but not really drinking right now. Hold for a long time. (6281 views)
Tasted by Marcyrillo on 10/24/2019 & rated 95 points: Swetness in the nose, cynamon, more roundstyle, elegant. Very long. Beautiful wine. Amazing. (4898 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 10/13/2019 & rated 96 points: Wow, this was on fire. Superb aromatics and palate complexity. So much for this being an 'off vintage'! (4769 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/10/2019: Heidi's Redux Group: Memorable Wines (Ciao Bella, Mpls): Same bottle as Chablis28 and BradE. As noted, it had been opened and splash double decanted the night before. Dried cherries, high tones spices, intnese palate with classic purity, red fruits, lots of dried woodsy notes and firm gripping tannins. As you'd expect, needs quite a bit of time. 92-93 range. Bartolo Mascarello

Ken Vastola's fabulous guide to Bartolo Mascarello labels

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
