Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 66 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by lozatron on 4/7/2024: Kentish Feast (Petts Wood): I struggle with notes for sweet wines but here goes...gold colour (in real life not quite as deep as the pic) lovely richness and mouthfeel. A hint of apple pie with raisins in. Great length. Went very well with blood orange tart. (529 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/13/2023: Very pretty in the glass, glowing gold and amber, apricot, wow, so pure, maple, apricot and white pepper. Really lovely. (1959 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 1/14/2023 & rated 95 points: A blend of Sémillon (90%) and Sauvignon Blanc (10%). Aged for 18-24 months in French oak barriques (approx. 1/3 new, 1/3 once used and 1/3 older). 13,5% alcohol. Tasted blind in a 1996-themed tasting.

Deep, luminous and quite intense golden-yellow color. Very intense nose with a pronounced streak of saffron, followed by quite unctuous aromas of acacia honey and Sultana raisins, some tinned pineapple tones, a little bit of fruit cocktail syrup, light lifted nuances of minty greenness, a hint of dried peach and a touch of vanilla custard. Very classically styled Suduiraut bouquet. The wine feels broad, very rich and slightly oily on the palate with a full body and sweet flavors of saffron and dried pineapple, some overripe peach tones, a little bit of Sultana raisin, light oaky nuances of caramel and vanilla custard, a hint of spicy bitterness and a touch of honey. Despite its richness and somewhat viscous mouthfeel, the medium-to-moderately high acidity manages to lend good sense of freshness to the wine and keeps it from coming across as too sticky. The finish is rich, juicy and wonderfully complex with a very long and intensely flavored aftertaste of pineapple and saffron, some evolved caramel tones, a little bit of vanilla custard, light Sultana nuances, a hint of overripe peach and a touch of browned butter.

An utterly delicious, classically styled and so harmonious vintage of Suduiraut. Even if the wine is from the period before the Château started to invest in quality (2001 onward, I believe), it still shows the Suduiraut hallmarks of concentration and almost unctuous fruit yet being at the same time surprisingly fresh and balanced, not overdoing the sweetness, alcohol or just that general richness. There is great sense of balance and harmony here. And lots of those classic saffron notes of an aged Sauternes, intermingling with beautiful tertiary notes of caramel and dried exotic fruits. I immediately guessed Sauternes before even tasting the wine, and when asked for the producer after I had tasted the wine, I guessed 1996 Suduiraut. Right on spot with the first guess. An excellent wine. (1961 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 11/15/2021 & rated 90 points: Neil’s Langoa Barton @ Hawksmoor (Hawksmoor, Guildhall): 50cl. Mid to full gold. Some botrytis, but the clean fruity style rather than medicinal. Decent attack. Freshness rather than overt sweetness. ***1/2 (3193 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 10/25/2020 & rated 91 points: Having generally panned this and most 1996 Sauternes for having off-flavours and lack of richness, this bottle was clean and attractive if lacking the concentration, complexity and botrytis of a top vintage. (3698 views)
Tasted by Old Tasting Notes on 4/7/2020 & rated 90 points: Honey and mead on the nose. First hit in the mouth is dominated by the honey and honeydew, followed by a softer peach follow. It’s nice but a little one note, and slightly more sweet than my preference. (4001 views)
Tasted by prof b on 1/7/2020 & rated 92 points: From 375. Apricots, honeycomb, great balance and a long finish. This will only improve but was fun to drink now. (3425 views)
Tasted by jmoore431 on 12/2/2019 & rated 91 points: Deep amber color; Honey, apricot and spice cupboard on the nose; botrytis, melange of spices, brisk acidity peeks through the sweetness. Not the best Suduiraut but still quite good. (3424 views)
Tasted by stefad on 12/1/2018 & rated 92 points: Bel équilibre entre liqueur et acidité, très digeste. 92/100 (3242 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 9/5/2018 & rated 91 points: Honey, orange blossom, candied apples, and boytritis on the nose. Sweet notes of melon, honey, and orange. Good acidity and good finish. (2859 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 5/18/2018 & rated 90 points: Bring a Very Good Bottle (Kenwood Restaurant): This Sauternes was definitely no slouch. However, I felt that it didn't show significant complexity, and time has taken some of the sweetness. (3429 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 5/17/2018 & rated 94 points: An Interesting Mix (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Deep gold color. PNP, drank a glass over 30 minutes. I thought this drank just splendidly with a delightful mix of aged beauty and complexity this really resonated for me. Caramelized sugar, orange, very honeyed, a creamy texture, pineapple, more subtle peach, plenty of sweetness still, but a lovely balance with elegance this really permeates. Loved it. (3492 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 5/7/2018 & rated 87 points: Nose of butterscotch, chlorine and formic acid. Tasted better than it sounds. Medium sweet. Little evidence of botrytis. Holding up but not a great Suduiraut. (2891 views)
Tasted by OmiyaDrinker on 12/26/2017 & rated 88 points: Burnt butter, papaya, butterscotch. Nice mouthfeel and round flavors but lacking acidity and balance. Some bitterness on the finish. (2613 views)
Tasted by john_s on 9/22/2017 & rated 94 points: Half bottle well stored.
Attractive gold, no brown, touch of green on meniscus.
Voluptuous botrytis and age and a bit of something like petroleum, quite beautiful.
Lovely flavour, perfect balance, not the most intense but none the less for that. Some dryness on the finish which enhances the mouth feel. I was very pleased with it. No hurry for the other half bottle. (2540 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 8/24/2017 & rated 91 points: En magnum à la Paulée d'été.
Beau sauternes assez profond, abouti, précis, sans être des plus complexes. 91 pts (2379 views)
Tasted by martcouz on 1/16/2017 & rated 87 points: Somme toute agréable. Beau vin pour terminer la soirée, mais sans la puissance d'un grand Sauternes. (3448 views)
Tasted by sharonandroland on 12/3/2016 & rated 91 points: Not the most intense but classic Sauternes. (3091 views)
Tasted by CCarson on 7/30/2016 & rated 92 points: Half bottle purchased in 1999 at San Francisco's Wine House. Cork in good shape: firm, extracted with no problems. Fine crystals present on the underside--also a good sign. Flavors of honey, orange rind, toffee/coffee. Very nice. Surprisingly balanced acidity for a twenty-year-old wine. (3576 views)
Tasted by Osiris021 on 3/20/2016 & rated 92 points: No formal notes. (3811 views)
Tasted by thewiz on 1/22/2016 & rated 92 points: Gourmetklubbens tjugoåttonde middag hos P+H (Tema: Lättlagat); 1/21/2016-1/22/2016 (Södermalm): Golden yellow colour. Nose expressive as always showing saffron, honey and coffee. This was drinking very nicely right now, but could keep another decade for sure. (3697 views)
Tasted by Kris G on 11/29/2015 & rated 91 points: lovely balance (3466 views)
Tasted by Mathijs81 on 11/14/2015 & rated 92 points: Struggling a bit to remove the cork, but well worth the effort.
This clearly a well made wine, not much to fault on it actually.
Drink now or keep cellared for x-more years - it will keep. (3287 views)
Tasted by Blauweiss on 6/2/2015 & rated 92 points: Big and ripe nose, tropical fruits, saffron, botrytis. Taste is a little bitter from high level of botrytis, but also sweet, balanced. Perhaps lacking some freshness I find in other vintages. Still, a good wine! (3232 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 12/28/2014 & rated 90 points: SLDS Christmas with Gavin: Golden coloured. Marmalade, orange peel, ginger and honey. Round, sweet and long - even has an element of refreshment to it. In a really good spot for drinking now. (3666 views)

Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes Bordeaux France

Just down the road from Yquem, is the large, beautiful estate of Suduiraut, 40 km from Bordeaux. On the left bank of the Garonne, Comte Blaise de Suduiraut built the this noble and aesthetically brilliant Château that is replete with stunning gardens designed by the very famous Le Nôtre. Suduiraut is one of the great wines of Sauternes, reknowned for their aromatic complexity and wealth of exotic flavours. The Château’s privileged sandy soils are well-drained and layered with gravel. In September misty mornings are followed by warm afternoons that allow for the development of botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. This in turn delivers the rich and distinctive taste of sweet but balanced wines kissed by honey and marked by lively acidity and opulent textures.

Their experience of assemblages of Sémillon (90 %) and Sauvignon (10 %) offer a full-bodied wine of a beautiful gold colour with amber tinges. The wine lies in wooden barrels for 18-24 months. This Sauternes displays harmony, power and marked complexity.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Le Grand Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac 1855 (Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac) - Read more about Sauternes, Barsac and its wines
– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
