 Tasted by RobbieD68 on 1/27/2024 & rated 97 points: Wow. Ridiculous amounts of black and blue fruits....bacon lard...mineral, chalk...this wine is in a great place right now. Probably peaking, but who knows? This was decanted for 2+ hours. - The Black Wine Guy (991 views)
 Tasted by cubswinws on 11/22/2023 & rated 95 points: Syrah dominated wine with dark color and nice long finish with a touch of bacon. (1311 views)

 Tasted by CThaker on 10/27/2023: 96 pts (1449 views)
 Tasted by cubswinws on 10/27/2023 & rated 96 points: Deep dark in color and black fruited with nice spice and touch of leather on the finish. (1532 views)
 Tasted by sonodoc on 8/4/2023 & rated 97 points: Fabulous! Plenty of black and blue fruits, with firm but supple tannins. Smooth, with a long finish. A wonderful accompaniment to a prime rib steak. Booker has always been my favorite Saxum! (1859 views)
 Tasted by pocchia on 4/16/2023 & rated 91 points: PnP 2016 Saxum Booker Vineyard of 73% Syrah & 27% Mararo. Deep, dark inky matte color; light doesn’t escape it’s opaqueness. Brooding, dark berries on the nose with an ABV of 15.6%. Very fruit forward on the front of my palate then a bit of bright freshness mid palate followed by a relaxed full flavor and plenty of tannins. Decent finish, not a lot of complexity; kinda flat. I’m getting more dark fruit than any spiciness. I may have opened it during a closed phase, yet still tasty juice. Stems up! (2007 views)
 Tasted by D'Yquembe Mutumbo on 4/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Fun, new world bottle with plenty of life and perhaps a touch too much alcohol, but for fans of this style this is ready to go and will give pleasure for the next 5-7 years or so. (1879 views)
 Tasted by viper_city on 7/18/2022: In a very good spot right now. Only needed 30 min in the glass to open up Gorgeously. Very good juice. Open ‘em up! (2567 views)
 Tasted by royalscam on 6/8/2022 & rated 94 points: An outstanding Booker, syrah with mataro in the blend. Took a few hours to open up; has an outstanding taste and buccal profile and better than average finish. It is at a bargain now with places like Benchmark when compared to auction prices. Maybe they haven't caught up yet? (2394 views)
 Tasted by pakabear on 1/18/2022: Too young, needs to sit 5 years (3079 views)
 Tasted by t_moderne on 11/25/2021 & rated 95 points: Opened, poured into a decanter and enjoyed with food (Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc.) Tasted a sip and then let it sit for about 2 hours before dinner.
Dark purple color.
Nose offers ripe dark fruits with a hint of charred wood and clay.
Delicious and inviting with the mixed dark berry fruit, balanced by acidity that keeps this inviting.
Long finish.
This benefitted from the decanting as it opened up and softened with exposure to air.
Outstanding. (2492 views)
 Tasted by Mike Dildine on 10/6/2021 & rated 95 points: 15.6 abv. Dark ruby, very aromatic. Palate features ripe plum, sweet cherries, coffee grounds, leather, black olive and black pepper. Very rich, complex, deep and long. Should hold well for several more years. (2353 views)
 Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 9/11/2021 & rated 95 points: Drank from a magnum over two nights and was pretty much lights out the entire time. Charred earth, super ripe blackberry/raspberry/strawberry (almost like preserves), Asian spice and smoked meat. Liqueur like but with enough acidity and brightness to lift it. Still likely 5 years until peak drinking. Nobody does Paso better than Justin Smith. (2068 views)
 Tasted by Mike Dildine on 7/16/2021 & rated 97 points: 15.6% abv. Dark Ruby, very aromatic. Boysenberry, cassis, blue fruit and heaps os luscious blue fruit. Layered, very deep, extremely intense, very long. Teriffic wine. (2096 views)
 Tasted by leadpencil on 3/19/2021 & rated 94 points: Full bodied, dark in color. Black raspberry, pepper, tar, clove. Great acidity. (1813 views)
 Tasted by pakabear on 1/22/2021 & rated 96 points: Dark cherry, strawberry, raspberry, cassis, white pepper, clove, cedar, roasted meats, medium + tannins but they balance well with the fruit at this stage, even as a PnP. It drank better after 2 hours in bottle, but is very approachable now. Probably will be best with another 5 years in bottle. (2052 views)
 Tasted by The Wine Sherpa on 4/19/2020 & rated 93 points: A bold Syrah. (1743 views)
 Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 5/13/2019 & rated 93 points: Opened in the bottle for 3 hours plus. Smoother and more integrated than any young Saxum I’ve had but does start to close near the end . An almost volcanic element going on here. Black fruit offset by cigar ash, bitter char, and a stemy quality all over the nose and palate. A restrained intensity remains even with extraction/ripeness reduced. Drink now to the next 10 years but really needs time for more fruit to come through. (2881 views)

Saxum

Producer website

Justin Smith of Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Syrah, Grenache, and Mataro based blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles, California. We let our rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, and cooling ocean breezes speak through our wines by keeping our yields extremely low, picking fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. We respect our land and farm everything sustainably without chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Because our vine’s roots penetrate deep through the fissures in the calcareous soil irrigation is rarely needed. Production is kept at 5000-6000 cases per year divided between 12 different cuvees, Broken Stones, Heart Stone Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard White, Booker Vineyards, Rocket Block, Bone Rock, Paderewski Vineyard, G2 Vineyard, Terry Hoage Vineyard, 4hearts Vineyard, and The Hexe.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Booker Vineyard

Vineyard website

We are active members in the Central Coast Vineyard Team and are a fully sustainable vineyard, using no chemicals or pesticides in our daily farming. Our entire vineyard is on hillsides that are made up of pure calcareous shale, allowing for very little vine vigor. Other than large projects such as pruning and fruit thinning, Eric Jensen farms the entire vineyard alone, allowing total visual and physical control. Most of the Vineyard is on 7x3 spacing, averaging about 2.5 tons to the acre which is just over two pounds per plant. Below is a list of the wineries that purchase our fruit; all of whom we are very proud.

* Jacob Toft Wines
* Linne Calodo
* Lone Madrone (owner/winemaker Neal Collins also is the winemaker at Tablas Creek)
* Saxum
* Villa Creek Cellars
* Summerwood Winery
* Sashi Moorman (Sashi makes wines for Stolpman Vineyards and Piedra Sassi)
* L'Aventure

Booker Vineyard is located on Paso Robles' Westside, immediately joining the famous Stephan Vineyards that produce L'Aventure Wines. The high-density vineyard is mostly Rhone varietals planted on steep hillsides of calcareous shale.

The name Booker comes from the two orphan brothers Claude and Dick Booker who had owned the land, as well as hundreds more acres on Paso's Westside. The Booker brothers were Paso's favorite sons, dedicating their lives to being great farmers and humanitarians. Aside from lending their farming knowledge and manual labor to neighbors and those in need, they were the area's biggest philanthropists, leaving 100% of their estate to charity when they passed.

After making wine with Justin Smith for five years and Stephan Asseo for two years the Jensens decided it was time to create their own expression with Booker Vineyard. The 2005 Vintage was Booker Vineyards first release with the wines being made by owner Eric Jensen. The wine making style is extremely soft and hands-off, attempting to let the fruit finish what it started seven months earlier. We rarely use a pump, never rack or filter, and use minimal sulphur.
We bottle 50% of our wines after 18 months, with the rest going roughly 30 months in oak prior to bottling. The two exceptions are Grenache, which gets bottled after 18 months and the white which is bottled after a year of aging.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
