Luminous and beautifully deep golden color with a vaguely coppery core. Very complex and wonderfully evolved nose with rich, layered aromas of wizened apricots, toasty nutty character, candied orange zest, some chamomile, a little bit of bruised apple, a little bit of smoke and a hint of exotic spice. Immensely attractive stuff. The wine is full-bodied, concentrated and very rich on the palate with off-dry flavors of baked apple, steely minerality, some dried peachy fruit, a little bit of beeswax, light pineapple tones, a toasty hint of roasted nuts and a mineral touch of wet stones. Typical of many Alsatian Pinot Gris wines, the wine is only medium in acidity with quite viscous, oily mouthfeel. The finish is sweet-yet-dry with rich, layered flavors of stony minerality, pineapples, some honeyed richness, a little bit of dried peach, light oxidative nuttiness, a hint of smoke and a touch of bruised apple.
As delicious as an aged Alsatian Pinot Gris can be. I can imagine these wines can be too sweet and unctuous for some people, but even though I prefer racy and delicate whites, I have a sweet spot for a good Alsatian Pinot Gris - and this wine fits the bill more than perfectly. This is just simply outstanding - and yet it feels like there's still a little bit of room for further development. Although not the easiest wine to pair with most dishes, this is just so good I could drink this stuff whenever wherever. Ridiculously lip-smacking stuff. (820 views) |

Domaine Weinbach received official designation as organic and biodynamic in 2010.Pinot GrisFrom Pinot Gris Wikipedia entry: Wines made from the Pinot gris vary greatly and are dependent on the region and wine making style they are from. Alsatian Pinot gris are medium to full bodied wines with a rich, somewhat floral bouquet. They tend to be spicy in comparisons with other Pinot gris. While most Pinot gris are meant to be consumed early, Alsatian Pinot gris can age well. German Pinot gris are more full-bodied with a balance of acidity and slight sweetness. In Oregon the wines are medium bodied with a yellow to copper-pink color and aromas of pear, apple, and/or melon. In California, the Pinot gris are more light bodied with a crisp, refreshing taste with some pepper and arugula notes. The Pinot grigio style of Italy is a light-bodied, often lean wine that is light in color with sometimes spritzy flavors that can be crisp and acidic. Although this wine can be very sweet, it will begin to lose its acidity when it is nearly ripe.
Pinot gris is considered an "early to market wine" that can be bottled and out on the market within 4–12 weeks after fermentation. Varietal character (Appellation America)

Its soils are marl-calcaro-sandstone, comparable to those of the Furstentum, with a higher proportion of sand and a slightly earlier maturation. The Altenburg promotes great ripeness, it produces very beautiful Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.
The deep, clay-limestone soils of this Kientzheim hill are recognized geologically and empirically as being very favorable to Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.
The lowest part of this hill gives birth to the Gewurztraminer Cuvée Laurence. ____________________________________________________________________________
