| Community Tasting Notes (average 88.8 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 15 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Weinberg Falls on 3/29/2020 & rated 88 points: Heavy barnyard on the nose laced with cassis and vanilla. Rustic, medium body. Stewed plums and bell pepper on the cool palate. Short mushroomy finish. Pleasant, uncomplicated and nearing the end of its lifespan. (839 views) | | Tasted by StewartWent on 3/28/2016 & rated 86 points: In line with the previous tasting. Certainly quite traditional and perhaps less attractive than prior tastings. Still, 11yrs for Crozes is more than reasonable so can't complain too much. Retains a stern structure and good tannin grip. (1502 views) | | Tasted by StewartWent on 12/28/2015 & rated 86 points: Less inviting than the previous tasting and perhaps a return to more traditional Crozes. Some musty notes and daggy fruits points to a potential corked wine, albeit a fairly mild dose. Good enough to keep drinking. (1523 views) | | Tasted by StewartWent on 6/28/2015 & rated 89 points: A classic example of the house TL style - deeply fruited, dry, long gravelly tannin - very recognisable even for a nufty like me. Finishes a touch short but it is 12 years old. And, considering the appelation, a great showing. The one criticism is that the house style does drown out any typical Crozes trait (perhaps a +ve?). (1579 views) | | Tasted by Rich S on 3/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Served blind. Medium dark purple color. Nose of smoke, tar, some blackberry and some rocky, mineral notes. Black and blue fruits on the palate but not ripe or sweet, with more smoky, meaty peppered beef jerky type flavors on the back end. Medium+ acid, medium tannins, dry finish. Compared to the bottle I had a few years ago, this was much better so perhaps the additional age helped it come together. (1979 views) | | Tasted by tooch on 9/9/2011: Friday Night Dinner (Medium Rare - Cleveland Park, Washington, DC): Nice perfumed nose of purple florals, subtle meat, sous bois and dark fruits. Palate wasn't as seductive as the nose, and will need time to even out. Thought it was a bit primary, but did show some nice substance - bacon, lilac and some charcoal. Wasn't as modern as other TL's I've had. (2292 views) | | Tasted by rwatkin on 5/25/2010 & rated 91 points: I found this wine now elegant. clean syrah. Lean profile with slight tinges of green pepper, wet earth, baryard, capped by distint iron notes on the finish. The iron on the finish subsided in 30 minutes. Notthe Chapoutier les Varonnieres...but really good! (1536 views) | | Tasted by Rich S on 4/7/2009 & rated 87 points: Part of syrah blind tasting (bottle 2 of 3). Decanted 1.5 hours. Dark purple color. Very closed on the nose with hints of black pepper coming through. Dark fruit on the palate, although somewhat muted. Tight tannins, thin mouthfeel and pleasant but not lingering finish. Overall, I was disappointed with this wine but I do think that it was drank too young and will get better with age. (1608 views) | | Tasted by rwatkin on 11/9/2008 & rated 92 points: Medium syrah nose but laser-like intense, focused flavor on the palate. Beautifully balanced, this blends fruit, acidity and tannins seamlessly. Tasted like a Northern Rhone syrah from a higher priced neighborhood. However, NOT a fruit forward, hedonistic wine. Elegant and structured. Great value... (1580 views) | | Tasted by Russell Faulkner on 10/26/2006: Tardieu-Laurent 2005 Tasting - London (Commonwealth Club - London): 100% Syrah Reductive nose, very bright sweet and sour fruit with big smooth tannin, vanilla and burnt coffee. Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)
Regional History: Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
