Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 71 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by murndog1 on 3/30/2024: - Medium/Full body with a medium finish - Drinking well after a short decant (497 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 2/15/2024 & rated 92 points: This developed really nicely with about 45 minutes of air and was a terrific pairing with our dinner (pecan crusted pork chop with a cherry demi-glace). To my palate, this is drinking at peak. Wish I had more! (889 views)
Tasted by Thebigbaby on 2/14/2024 & rated 90 points: Aging gracefully and beautifully. Light crimson in the glass with aromas of spice and berries. The wine has a nice balance of that spice and berries and carries a long finish that coaxes you into that next sip… (868 views)
Tasted by DavidWong168 on 2/2/2024 & rated 94 points: Inviting aromas of sweet clove, citrusy cardamom, dark berries and plum that make your mouth water. Wonderful depth and terrific energy on the palate. The first sip electrifies the senses and then the flavors taper slowly, showing earthy complexity on the finish. Acidity, alcohol and tannins are nicely balanced. (975 views)
Tasted by wiscgrad on 8/31/2023 & rated 92 points: Delicious new world cab. Missing the Rutherford dust. Big fruit and round tannins. Mostly dark fruit (1265 views)
Tasted by swade on 7/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Smoldering aromas and fruit. Pomegranate and black cherry flavors. Guests loved it. Better than earlier bottles. More open now. 92. (1608 views)
Tasted by Montesquieu on 3/24/2023 & rated 93 points: 100% New World style. A spicy version of Cabernet akin to Aussie Shiraz. Well done, complex, provocative. Solid quality for the $70 cost - fair, but not noteworthy, by Napa standards. I buy this because my daughter is named Scarlett. I think this is in the middle of its peak lasting at most another 5 years. It lacks the earth and structure to improve in its secondary thereafter. (1961 views)
Tasted by swade on 9/19/2022 & rated 92 points: Smoldering aromas. Pomegranate and black cherry flavors. Tightened up a bit on day two and showing some grip on the finish. Very good. A little young. Not as complex or quite as good as any of the prior three to four vintages. Still young and still hard to keep my hands off these. 92 (2362 views)
Tasted by Jay A on 8/23/2022 & rated 92 points: My wife thinks the label is one of the best she's seen (she's a graphic artist). I have to agree.

I love Mike Smith wines - Carter, Myriad, Becklyn - and this one while it has the Mike Smith stgnature style, it is not as extracted and opulent as the others. Strangely I like this subdued style. It has the typical sweet and ripe black fruit you get in all his wines. The body is lighter and not as concentrated. When you say "not as concentrates" that's usually a bad sign, but this wine still has the stuffing, ti just isn't as over the top as some of the other Mike Smith wines. For someone who likes lighter wines like Pinot Noir, this type of Cabernet is appealing. For the price, well under $100, I think it is great. (2341 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 8/17/2022 & rated 91 points: The first vintage I had of this wine was 2013 and I thought it was absolutely fantastic (especially for $50 which was the price then). Same went for '14 and '15 vintages. I feel like '16 - '18 have just not had the same "oomph" (yes, that is a wine term!) This is my 5th bottle from 2016 and although a good wine with a score above 90, I do not believe it warrants the $70 price... there are several wines I prefer to this at a much lower price point. Interestingly, I saw that I do not have the 2019 in my cellar or on order, perhaps I missed an email allocation? (3054 views)
Tasted by gquigs on 6/18/2022 & rated 92 points: Black cherry, blackberry. Fruit forward. Tasty. (2209 views)
Tasted by Montesquieu on 5/26/2022 & rated 91 points: Not the best showing of a Scarlett in my experience. Seemed a bit too typical Napa jam without a lot of elegance or complexity. Might appeal better to those who prefer Napa style, but that's not me. (2226 views)
Tasted by Mdubnik on 5/7/2022 & rated 90 points: a little flat. needs more time in the bottle. hasn't opened up much yet. notes of vanilla. (2024 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 1/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Good wine but nothing like previous vintages (day 1), showing thin on the palate now. Let's see where this one goes. 91/92 Points. Day 2, still thin and tight, I would wait on this one but there is no guarantee where this wine will go unfortunately. (3345 views)
Tasted by air guitar & pinot noir on 10/2/2021 & rated 93 points: Extremely nice Cab with sandalwood and beautiful dark fruit notes. Smooth and sexy on the palate. Opened up almost immediately on the second glass. Some caramel flavors as well as a touch of spice box. Very enjoyable. (2238 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 7/9/2021: Solid fruit forward cab and true to form (2512 views)
Tasted by mpsocal on 4/24/2021 & rated 95 points: Top notch wine and a bargain. Love the fruit and wood integration. The finish goes on forever. Just amazing. (2936 views)
Tasted by greg@newsomehh.com on 3/26/2021 & rated 93 points: One of the best values and great tasting in my cellar (3054 views)
Tasted by greg@newsomehh.com on 2/20/2021 & rated 93 points: One of the best valued wines in the cellar, Mike Smith is remarkable, (3041 views)
Tasted by gquigs on 1/23/2021 & rated 93 points: Very good. Black cherry and spices. Drinking beautifully (2871 views)
Tasted by RockyII on 1/23/2021 & rated 92 points: I think this is drinking really nice right now. Great balance of sweeter black fruits with tart red berries. Some sandalwood and maple flavors m. Tangy acidity but a little light on tannins. Enjoying this much more than a recent 2017 vintage I had. Medium plus body. About 92z (2834 views)
Tasted by wineguy1968 on 1/22/2021: Better than a year ago. Had trouble putting the glass down. Very rich red fruit driven through the mid pallet with bit of acid bite on the finish. Alcohol on the finish but not off putting. (2634 views)
Tasted by Thebigbaby on 12/12/2020 & rated 90 points: Good but still needs time. Not much of a nose to speak of and drinks fine as a PNP but much better with 3-4 hours of air. Slightly sweet on PNP, then gets more chocolate notes and acidity creeps in. I will wait at least another year on the others in my cellar. (2725 views)
Tasted by Franken Berry on 12/9/2020 & rated 90 points: straight from the bottle, this wine is likely in its ideal drinking window. the alcohol and pie like fruit has settled, there is a bit more spice and cedar, but the lack of acidity seems to keep it off balance. Based on very limited experience (I started with Mike Smith wines in 2014), many of the Napa valley designates age like an awkward teenager in their early life. In dog years, this one is about 23 and in its prime. (3192 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 10/31/2020 & rated 93 points: Sweet red fruit centric with edges of vanilla and baking spice. All up front with a medium bodied mid section and light finish. Very juicy and refreshing almost Zinfandel like frame. No brainer for an easy pop and pour. Don’t see a reason to cellar these. (3005 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
