| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Nevels on 9/26/2020 & rated 86 points: Smooth, strong tannins, blackberries (1832 views) | | Tasted by AGELVIS on 9/19/2020 & rated 92 points: Three hour decant. Deep dark magenta color. Blackberry, blueberry, and French toast on the pleasant nose. Smooth, dry palate, with tongue coating acidity. Firm, full, medium intensity tannins on the longish. This is an impressive drinker for its price point. I plan to buy more. (1896 views) | | Tasted by jviz on 5/22/2020 & rated 90 points: Classic cabernet with textbook flavors of cassis and blackcurrant, some pencil shavings and supportive acidity. Medium in body, somewhat understated, but built in the frame of those classic CA cabs from the 70s and 80s. Nice now, but likely a lot better in 15-20 years (2026 views) | | Tasted by mbfrancis on 5/17/2020 & rated 83 points: Fruit forward, bouquet of cherry and bell pepper. Lack of tannin. Great cab drinkable now. (1668 views) | | Tasted by Alpton on 2/21/2020 & rated 91 points: Blueberry, blackberry, grape stalk, oak. Fresh entry with juicy blackberry, black cherry and a spicy element. Silky tannin with more blackberry and some oak and vanilla following throughout a long finish. (1879 views) | | Tasted by FGS on 5/4/2019 & rated 91 points: Improving, and I think will be at it's best 2020-2025. Drank after a 2007 Spottswoode and 2012 N&N Hayne (100pts/94pts respectively) and stood tall in that company, with guests sipping, then nodding in appreciation. Or maybe we were just all drunk by then...either way, it drank well and impressed along side some heavy hitters. (1188 views) | | Tasted by Blackwa on 2/17/2019 & rated 91 points: Very concentrated plum initially with well integrated fine oak and some aromatics from the yeast. Great tannic structure which grips the palate but isn’t astrigent and good acidity to balance. Finishes with some nice tobacco notes after you let it open up for a while. Very good potential for aging on this over the next 7-10 years. (1406 views) | | Tasted by meaka123 on 5/10/2018: Drink by 2030. (1863 views) | | Tasted by FGS on 5/9/2018 & rated 90 points: Really like this vintage from Hawkes, and believe the scores will improve as this wine ages. Notes of mocha on the nose, and cherry, plumb and dark fruit on the attack. Gentle, mouthwatering finish. Showing good balance, which again, should improve with some time in the cellar. High expectations for this vintage. (1590 views) |
| Hawkes Producer websiteCabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountyAlexander Valley Alexander Valley Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia
