Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 95.7 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 8 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 5/4/2024: Near perfect Syrah for mine. So engaging and ethereal. Stony and cool, with briary fruits. Has some graphite and menthol and a hint of black olive. Structural elements are buried, and tannins simply occupy a space. Fantastic energy and freshness and each sip invites another. (996 views)
Tasted by SARED on 11/29/2023 & rated 95 points: Relatively tight after an hour decant. Pure fruited. 95/96 potential. Try again in 5 years? (2426 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 2/25/2023: Paired with Persian lamb shank and lentils. This was quite closed and seemed in a dumb phase, unlike the ‘17 I had a year ago. Some dark fruit and green stem. And that was about it. My wife rated it 94 but I am withholding the score, whereas the ‘17 was ethereal and singing. Shame. (3754 views)
Tasted by zachb1125 on 2/9/2023 & rated 95 points: Dinner with Salil and Nick -2/2

Took a few hours to open after decanting. Intense fruit and floral notes and earth at first. It's spread out into olive, brighter fruit, a little salinity, meatiness but not overly funky. Cooked blackberry and blueberry. The tiniest bit of epazote. Intense tannins and bright fruit, so very young still but fantastic already. (3509 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 5/16/2021: Enjoyed over 4-5 hours. I was shocked at how open and giving this was from the start. Bright, pure and balanced. Berries, olive and floral notes. Despite being open for business, there is certainly underlying structure and this will age beautifully. (6583 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 5/12/2021: Deep dark and penetrating, with perfectly ripe fruit and beautiful balance. There’s a hint of menthol and some black olive too. With air you get the scent of violets. It is youthful and compact, with so much more to give. (5304 views)
Tasted by beatles on 5/10/2021 & rated 97 points: Absolutely stunning. An iron fist, yet ekstremely elegant, almost Burgundian in style with plenty of free running juice. Plenty of smoke here, dark berries, olives, but its the unfirced character of this wine, that really rings through. If only life was like this ...
#Palægade #PB (5662 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 2/7/2021: Still open with complex aromatics of menthol, blood plum, violets, raspberries and black olive. It has depth and flesh and great presence in the mouth. There's savoury nuance and ample structure just below the surface. Great balance, proportion and length. Will live for a very long time but utterly delicious now. (5203 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
