Tasted by barryjkeller@gmail.com on 2/25/2024: Fabulous. So young but so drinkable. Incredibly fine tannins - dont even get that silky element they are so fine. Structure and acidity is great. This is going to be something special, bt I think it will take quite a while fully show itself (4198 views)
Tasted by acyso on 2/18/2024 & rated 95 points: One last round at Jade Court (Chicago, IL): From magnum. Great showing of a wine that I've loved for quite a while. It's a lot more approachable right now than the dark and intense 2015, with an effusive nose of smoke, slight saline olive notes, and plenty of black fruit. The palate isn't overbearingly tannic, and there's more of a lightness thanks to the acidity here. The fruit is mostly black with a hint of red, but this is surprisingly drinkable (even out of large-format) right now, though there is of course still plenty of potential. (4473 views)
Tasted by Irish_Wine on 11/20/2023 & rated 93 points: From 375ml. Beautiful crimson in the glass. Expressive, layered nose. Core of red and black cherry together with blackberry. Peppered meat, bacon fat and leather. A note of hot, wet stone. Medium to full bodied with lovely freshness and high but fine tannins. Long, bright, peppered fruit finish. Delicious now but the best is yet to come.

WSET notes:

Deep garnet.

Pronounced on the nose with violet, blackberry, black cherry, red cherry, wet stone, black pepper, meat, bacon fat, leather. Developing.

Pronounced and dry on the palate. Medium plus body, medium alcohol, high acidity, high tannins, long finish.

Can drink now but has potential for aging. (4746 views)
Tasted by yohancastaing on 10/30/2023: Drinking beautifully today despite being youthful, the 2016 Côte Rôtie from Jamet reveals a deep, smoky bouquet with aromas of violets, blackberries, licorice, thyme, and sage, followed by a full-bodied, seamless and concentrated with bright acids and a long, penetrating finish. (5206 views)
Tasted by palfr2 on 8/24/2023: At Conrad, Tokyo. Very early in the life of this wine clearly and picked off the list in the name of science as I have several laying for long-term aging. Assessed against memories of the 2010 which is a benchmark for this Cuvee. Marginally leaner and more red fruited. The nose is already quite expressive but the palate is comparatively more muted. This can and will probably find a smidgen of additional midpalate depth to be truly great (5476 views)
Tasted by BCJ99 on 8/5/2023 & rated 94 points: Tasted from half bottle (0.375l)
Pepper, earthy, blueberry, dried orange peel, very powerful and complex, drinking very well at this point

@ Restaurant L'Atlantide 1874 (*), Nantes, France (5275 views)
Tasted by jhw425 on 7/9/2023 & rated 93 points: This needed an hour but was excellent from 750ml. Old school, savory, with enough fruit to make it excellent (5159 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 7/7/2023 & rated 95 points: Lovely nose with slightly backwards flavors of dark fruit, black pepper, and violets. Quite high acidity and very tannic on the palate with notes of dark fruit, cherries, brine, and meat. Long finish. This is really promising and clearly not showing everything right now. It evolved nicely with air but I feel like there was quite a bit held back. I'd wait another 10 years. 95++ (4974 views)
Tasted by ThijsV on 5/26/2023 & rated 93 points: Avalon restaurant (and Oocker) (Amsterdam, NL): [Restaurant purchase] No detailed notes, tasted blind. Not difficult to get to Northern Rhone. What a delight, albeit just on the edge of being too young. Still utterly enjoyable, a phenomenal wine. Bacon, olives, a green note. Black pudding, rust, black fruit. Deep and beautiful. Very long. Ex aequo with Mugnier on 3 (4819 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 5/4/2023 & rated 95 points: A private dinner (Restaurant Spectrum **, Amsterdam, NL): Tasted blind. Clearly Northern Rhone, Gonon? No, more classical. Jamet? Yes. Côte Rôtie - 2016? Check. I love the interaction with Cas Kratz, the excellent sommelier and maître - and what a fantastic wine it is. Consistent with my previous notes. (5313 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 3/10/2023 & rated 95 points: Meaty base with black olives, dried herbs and mineral notes of graphite presenting a ripe and well-defined dark berry fruit. The palate benefited from fresh acidity. Full bodied and unsurprisingly for such a young Côte Rôtie not fully integrated yet with an imbalanced finish. Give it another decade and this could be fabulous. Didn’t have the proper time to follow this, but felt a notch or so below the 2015. (5760 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 3/10/2023 & rated 96 points: Blind tasting dinner. Very complex nose. Dark fruit, vegetable, pepper. Elegant palate. This will be grand after 2030. 96+ (5511 views)
Tasted by SARED on 2/11/2023 & rated 94 points: 3 hour decant. Paired better with olives than the charcuterie. Lovely wine, but I don’t see this at level of 2010 and 2012. I am admittedly unable to predict the future as well as other CT though. 94+ (4834 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 12/24/2022 & rated 95 points: Christmas Eve Dinner (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): Not decanted. Marries primordial minerally energy with seamless, silky finesse. Dense and subtle, pure and precise. Creamy red berries, flowers and a hint of smoke, velvety tannins. Effortless elegance and harmony. Outstanding resonance and length. Combines gravitas with a playful lightness of touch like a late Mozart symphony. Not shut down at all, great future. (5754 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/13/2022 & rated 95 points: Jamet Côte-Rôtie and Other Northern Rhône with Steak (Jordan's Place): Alongside the 2013, these are two brilliant wines. Open 8 hours, half in a decanter. Enchanting aromas demand your attention, then a real powerhouse on the palate that tells you where this is heading. Not close to its peak, even though great already now. (6320 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 10/8/2022 & rated 95 points: Full-bodied, spicy, floral, rich, deep, and vibrant, the lifted wine delivers loads of fresh, sweet, red berries, pepper, cocoa, and a touch of salt that carry through from the mid-palate until the finish. Drink from 2026-2047. (6683 views)
Tasted by jviz on 8/9/2022 & rated 97 points: Holy cow this was fantastic on the pop and pour. Wild, candied blue fruits with hints of lavender, maybe a little mint. Some peach in the background, I wondered if there is a viogner coferment but the Domaine site says no. It has a sauvage meatiness, awesome texture and perfume; and then after a few hours open shut down pretty firmly. Still I think this wine is a legend in the making. (7151 views)
Tasted by acyso on 7/25/2022 & rated 95 points: From half-bottle, from the same source as another half bottle that I opened a week ago. This bottle isn't quite as aromatically convincing as that last bottle. It certainly has most of the same characteristics, but the perfume is more subdued and there's more of a burliness to this half-bottle. Nonetheless, the classic syrah characteristics are present in multitudes on the palate; this feels a little riper and more closed off and is more reminiscent of the wine in 750 mL. (7444 views)
Tasted by acyso on 7/18/2022 & rated 98 points: "Jimmy Suckles; elbow deep": From half-bottle. This bottle, perhaps being a little more advanced due to its size, and from having been sitting on a store shelf until a few months ago, is showing outrageously well. This feels like a time machine as to how this wine will evolve, and I really, really like what I see here. Beautiful aromatics with lots of fruit and plenty of olive brine -- absolutely textbook for what this wine should be. The fruit is pretty and more red than black, with a silky texture on the palate and some smoky elements and olive brine notes as well. Good acidity to freshen it up, along with some very youthful tannins. A legend in the making. (7756 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 6/20/2022: Wines during Provence trip; 6/18/2022-6/21/2022: At Le Bistrot de l'Oustalet since the restaurant was closed during the days that we were there. Similar stewed qualities to the Rayas, and surprisingly soft without structure for a young Jamet. Again, not bad but not what I expected probably because of poor provenance. (6092 views)
Tasted by gbejjani on 4/25/2022 & rated 94 points: A great exemplar of the appellation and the domaine. Memorable, a textbook blend of fullness and fineness, immensely satisfying in a way only the truly great can achieve.

Tasted by Nanda on 3/29/2022 & rated 93 points: Jamet Day (Ada St.): 16/15 pair. Attractive nose of floral, stemmy, intense, black fruit. Super refined, delineated and bright palate. Classic meat, pepper and olive is precise though the fruit has a polished veneer in this vintage / at this stage. Surprisingly approachable already. May not be the longest lived vintage. Much more interesting and fun than the 15 at this stage though. (6334 views)
Tasted by acyso on 3/29/2022 & rated 95 points: Jamet Day (Chicago, IL): This wine still has it going on. It's pretty much everything I remember it being from tasting it during the first covid summer. Crazy aromatics that are on the red fruit side of the spectrum. Very clean (lacking some of the wilder Jamet aromatics -- not necessarily a bad thing) and precise; beautiful acidity and midweight in the context of the wines tonight. Very much better than the somewhat suspect bottle of 2015, and probably among my favourites tonight, though it gets dinged for the simple fact that it's just too young. (6713 views)
Tasted by Povilas on 2/25/2022 & rated 95 points: Wine was very monolithic, but whispering endless quality - such a great balance of freshness, shy concentration and long finish. Impeccably balanced wine - not too much of a flowers of fruit, just initial hints of stemmy spice, subtle Burgundian quality and lots of 'je ne sais pas quoi' - the feeling I get often with top quality producers - I can't express clearly with my words, why they blow my way and hold my breath. No significant changes on a 2nd night. Looking forward to open 2nd bottle after 10 years at least. But if you can afford, it is very drinkable now and might never to shut down seriously. (5786 views)
Tasted by Povilas on 2/25/2022 flawed bottle: Sadly - corked. But huge concentration and ripe cassis fruit was fighting back to TCA. Until, within few hours, wine palate and finish have died.
still could grasp impressive concentration, flirting with too much ripeness for my taste. Maybe fresh and elegant Cote Roties, tasted alongside, had made a sharper contrast. (5436 views)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Côte-Rôtie

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
