Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by deschnoll on 11/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Wonderful salinity and notes of olives. Enjoyed with Thanksgiving dinner, paired beautifully with the dark meat, firm tannins. Drinking well, can continue to age for some time I'd bet. (417 views)
Tasted by DaddyNeedsPow on 7/27/2021 & rated 92 points: Enjoyable even in its youthful state! (934 views)
Tasted by Surf City Wine Guy on 10/18/2020 & rated 92 points: This Cornas exhibits a highly perfumed nose with gorgeous black and blue fruits, violets, white pepper notes and assorted meatiness in the background. This wine maintains a long continuous finish, which features blueberry, blackberry bramble and cracked pepper notes. (1084 views)
Tasted by erikdahlin on 4/25/2020: Deep, dark ruby color with a rich, inky nose. First sip was rather tight, but opened up nicely over the course of a few hours. Worth a repeat. (1130 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 9/29/2019: By the glass. Initially it gives me an artificial odour of pine disinfectant that is replaced by notes of white pepper and red berries. In the mouth the sharp acidity is mixed with firm tannins. Quite young enough to be enjoyed now. Overall modern stuff.

(1548 views)
Tasted by stenbergs on 9/12/2019 & rated 91 points: Behöver mycket luft och vinner helt säkert på att vila några år till. (1181 views)
Tasted by Blacksmith450 on 9/8/2019 & rated 92 points: Tout en jeunesse et en fruit. Robe framboise, bouche bien droite. Très beau potentiel. (1407 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 8/29/2019 & rated 92 points: This opaque crimson wine was Vinturi-decanted and serially tasted over the ensuing three hours. Loaded with boysenberries, blackberries and dark plums, it is a full-bodied "fruit bomb" that is beautifully balanced by fresh acidity, sweet tannins and a supporting cast of tapenade, baking spices, smoked meat, iron and lavender. The wine's oak and alcohol (listed as 13.5%) are quite tame, in contrast to many similar-priced offerings from the New World. Impressively dense on the middle palate and finishing long, this is a tremendous Syrah that is well-worthy of its sticker price. Enjoy it over the next decade. Drink now-2030. (794 views)
Tasted by srh on 8/10/2019: Winebar [1 Rosé, 3 Whts, & 8 Reds] from 08/09/19 + 4 Shared Bottles (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): 100% Syrah; "A blend from 2 different vyd sites: - 60% from vyds located on the hillside (16 yr old vines on the 'coteau') which are planted in sandy soils, decomposed granite with some rocks; - 40% from the bottom of the slope (40 yr old vines on the 'pied de coteau') which are planted in sandy soils. Yield: 33 hl/ha; Manual harvest, 100% destemming, fermentation in tanks for 3 wks, daily remontage & pigeage; Malolactic fermentation in oak barrels & aging on the lees for 12-18 mos in 2-4 yr old barrels;"

N: RIPE plums with an animal-like funk from time to time

P: Med, poss LM, body; RNDISH entry with very NICE, almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays in contact with the init frt as it fairly seamlessly transitions into a LONG, BALANCED finish with a subtle swtness to the unoffensive, yet firming, dusty tannins. For now with food, + may improve a bit for 6-12 mos, then drinking through '23, poss '24? VERY nicely done! 13.5% ABV; My EXC/EXC+. 95 pts Dunnuck, 89 WA (Czerwinski), & 3*(*)/5* drinkrhone.com . [This vendor's $41.95 puts it #3/4 current wine-searcher postings.]

Note: Had > air (≈2-1/2 hrs in a small tasting glass) than when I'd tasted it on JUST 7/13/2019, so MIGHT that explain WHY I found it > approachable/CLEARLY nicer than I did then? [I decided to split the difference on drinking window.] (864 views)
Tasted by srh on 7/13/2019: Rhone Reds (1-N, 5-S; 1-'15 & 5-'16s) (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): 100% Syrah; "A blend from 2 different vyd sites: - 60% from vyds located on the hillside (16 yr old vines on the 'coteau') which are planted in sandy soils, decomposed granite with some rocks; - 40% from the bottom of the slope (40 yr old vines on the 'pied de coteau') which are planted in sandy soils. N: CLOSED, but seemingly RIPE berries, poss with mineral undertones? Intensity lurking?

P: LM body; NICE, almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which, while staying within hailing distance of the init frt, morphs into a LONG, balanced finish with an elegant tanginess & HINTS of swtness to the dusty tannins. NEEDS through '22 to loosen its grip, then making its 10th. 13.5% ABV; My EXC-, *quite* poss MORE down the line. 95 pts Dunnuck, 89 WA (Czerwinski), & 3*(*)/5* drinkrhone.com . [This vendor's $41.95 puts it #3/4 current wine-searcher postings.] (574 views)
Excellent. 91 pts (1251 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
