| Community Tasting Notes (average 88.8 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 93 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by callmeacab22 on 11/13/2023 & rated 91 points: Needed time upon opening to bring out flavors. Nicely integrated flavors although a bit lighter than I was expecting. (433 views) | | Tasted by wineshlub on 5/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Opened 90 minutes in advance. Aroma of garden herbs and black fruit. Rich flavors of cassis with hints of lemon, blackcurrants and licorice in the finish. Robust, hearty, firm backbone, some complexity. Plenty of room for development. Excellent wine at an outstanding price. (695 views) | | Tasted by larseman on 1/5/2023 & rated 91 points: Sval, slank men med karaktär. Syrlig och matvänlig med bra längd. (860 views) | | Tasted by Brockster303 on 11/20/2022 & rated 88 points: Meh. Zinfandel notes but everything was much too muted (865 views) | | Tasted by Hover low 64 on 11/6/2022 & rated 90 points: Very tasty but still a bit on the young side. Some dark red fruits started to come alive as time passed - and the fine tannins added nice mouthfeel. Much better on the second night - I suggest another two years of cellaring for this to fully develop. (876 views) | | Tasted by joet626 on 7/14/2022 & rated 89 points: dark in color. Leather and meaty flavors. Better with food (949 views) | | Tasted by SadEdjo on 4/2/2022 & rated 91 points: dark, brooding, pine, forest floor, savoury dark fruit. well integrated but firm tannins; good lift (1364 views) | | Tasted by Merrit on 10/17/2021 & rated 92 points: Blackberry, cherry, cola, vanilla, licorice, black olive and pepper. This is powerful and enjoyably mouth-coating. (1679 views) | | Tasted by awever on 3/15/2021 & rated 90 points: Schon sehr gut trinkbar, wird nicht mehr besser, hervorragendes PLV (2104 views) | | Tasted by roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com on 12/20/2020 & rated 86 points: After a wait of about half a year, this wine is now much more ready to drink. It is not as ripe and soft as the 2015 was, and will never be. It has a bit of a green edge to it. Nevertheless, this is still a nice drink. I'll give the next bottle another 6-months wait to let it mellow some more. (1964 views) | | Tasted by Laz4wine on 12/17/2020 & rated 90 points: Darn good wine, plain and simple, heck of a value here and just all around great dry dark cherry-vanilla cola fruit with a kiss of spice and licorice on the smooth round finish. Definite re-buy any time if it delivers like this at mid-teens price. (2301 views) | | Tasted by Baron Slick on 12/15/2020 & rated 93 points: I can't say enough about this wine. It gushes with blackberries, violets, graphite, and a hint of black olives, all in beautiful poise and proportion. Polished, structured, and completely engaging, this delivers tons of pleasure, while youthful grip etches the long, succulent finish. Outstanding. (2077 views) | | Tasted by Levinsb on 11/24/2020: Dry tannic wall of tar. Some blackberry licorice, hint of vanilla and plum skin. Bigger wine lots of acid. Needs a charred steak on a cold night. (2042 views) | | Tasted by CWilliam on 8/6/2020: Not as good as last bottle tasted in 6/2019 - PNP. Paired with grilled swordfish. Didn't take notes. 89+/-
Maybe off bottle? (2295 views) | | Tasted by roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com on 5/30/2020 & rated 88 points: The first bottle of this was quite a chock after the very pleasant, easy-going 2015 vintage. It was a bit harsh, green, clearly less ripe. With a bit more bottle age, this is showing much better now. But the slightly under-ripe edge remains. Not good QPR at 15 €. (1743 views) | | Tasted by KaupCava on 5/10/2020 & rated 90 points: Medium oak vanilla dark fruit nose. Blackberry licorice and vanilla taste. Good fruit acid balance Lingering finish (2115 views) | | Tasted by cevans129 on 4/6/2020 & rated 91 points: Great full bodied red. Dark fruit, spice, hint if leather. Great value - sings with the right food pairing as well. (2332 views) | | Tasted by Levinsb on 4/5/2020: Big spicy dark fruits. A large wine for meat. Hefty but balanced tannins , acid and fruit. Will last a few more years. (2138 views) | | Tasted by Hans Rytterbrant on 3/21/2020 & rated 88 points: Good medium bodied wine. Red fruits. (1913 views) | | Tasted by jonathanknowles on 2/12/2020 & rated 89 points: I think I was very harsh on the previous bottles, or it really has come together in the last year.
Cool red berry smell, cherry, raspberry, a bit of earth. Crunchy and fresh in the mouth, light to medium bodied but with good fruit concentration and quite a bit of dusty tannin. Lovely. Like a cross between Beaujolais and Chianti. (2232 views) | | Tasted by richshoes on 1/8/2020 & rated 92 points: Amazing for the price and can compete with anything. Multi-layered complex medium bodied wine with nice fruit, spice and earth accents. Can't wait to get more! (2243 views) | | Tasted by roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com on 12/28/2019 flawed bottle: Ever so slightly cork tainted, so not rated. Needs more time, tannins are pretty rough when you open the bottle. After two-three hours open, the wine softens a bit. Wait and see. (1650 views) | | Tasted by Pebben on 12/8/2019 & rated 89 points: Consistent with previous note. (2348 views) | | Tasted by JasonG on 10/8/2019 & rated 90 points: Medium dark ruby red. Clean and pure dark fruits, balanced finished, a touch of spice and forest on finish. Delicious. (2469 views) | | Tasted by robmatic on 9/27/2019 & rated 90 points: A wine of substantial value. Serious palate impression and presence. Unusual but very tasty, and plenty of structure. I'd buy again. (2293 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |

U.S. Importer (addt'l info)Descendientes de José Palacios Bierzo PétalosDescendientes de Jose Palacios’ first vintage was 1999. The men in charge are Ricardo Perez and legendary vigneron Alvaro Palacios. MencíaMencia is grown in the Northwestern region of Spain near the borders of Galicia, Leon, and Zamora. Mencia produces fruity wines of great color, acidity and aging potential. It is sweet and aromatic, with a good dose of alcohol. The vines produce medium-sized clusters and fruit.
The reds made from Mencia have a characteristic velvety palate. Traditional reds are pale, fragrant and light wines. Modern winemakers are creating bolder reds, of higher concentration, expressing Mencia’s aromas and freshness. Many wineries are taking advantage of the variety ability to aging.
Rose wines are aromatic and fruity, lively, light and soft.Spain Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia Wine Map on weinlagen-info
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net
Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.Castilla y León Castilla y León Wine (Turismo Castilla y León )Bierzo[[D.O.]] Bierzo is located on the western edge of the province of [[León]], next to the [[Galicia|Galician]] border. The region has a distinct microclimate, being at relatively low altitude and protected on both sides by mountains, marking a transition between the arid [[meseta]] and verdant Galicia.
The Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route passes directly through the region and the predominant red grape, [[Mencía]], was allegedly introduced by pilgrims. Mencía makes up 70% of planting and many wines are 100% Mencía. [[Garnacha Tintorera]] is the secondary red grape, although there are also experimental plantings of other varieties, including [[Merlot]] and [[Cabernet Sauvignon]]. Whites may contain [[Godello]], [[Doña Blanca]], [[Palomino]] and [[Malvasia]].
Bierzo produces much inexpensive bulk table wine but an influx of smaller bodegas around the turn of the millenium are producing modern-styled wines attracting international critical acclaim.
