Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by 1961Vintage on 3/17/2024 & rated 93 points: From magnum. Wonderfully aged and well made zin. Everything you'd expect from the quality cellars of Elyse. Hits all the classic notes. At peak and would suggest drinking now or over the next year or two. (128 views)
Tasted by TwoSmoochies on 8/10/2014 & rated 91 points: Very good after it was opened for about an hour (2069 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 6/16/2013 & rated 93 points: The wine is a medium ruby red color showing just a touch of brick, mainly at the edge. The very appealing nose reminded me more of a Claret than a zinfandel. There was some brambly berries and pepper, but they were joined with tobacco, cedar, dried herbs, cassis, and warm baking spices. This has a medium body, soft integrated tannins, and good acidity. On the palate this has lost most of its early "baby fat" and is a smooth, nuanced Zinfandel that again could be easily mistaken for a quality Claret. The finish is fairly long with nice fruit, spice, and a touch of earthiness. To some people, this may be over the hill, to me it is in a wonderful spot. This was from a 375ml bottle. (2457 views)
Tasted by Tarpon222 on 8/19/2012 & rated 89 points: Proves the value of age. This was enjoyable, rich, peppery. Opened for 2 hours (2812 views)
Tasted by spidersva on 9/1/2011 & rated 88 points: Good not great - rich deep flavors up front, but left me hanging from there. At $18 I would really like this; at $30ish it is just good. (3352 views)
Tasted by Tarpon222 on 8/19/2011 & rated 88 points: Not impressed. Finish was off/disappointing. Actually finished it the second night and there was modest improvement. (3333 views)
Tasted by PASimon on 8/12/2011 & rated 85 points: Mentholic and Disjointed. Started tasting at 30 minutes of air exposure...took 2 1/2 hours to consume the bottle and it didn't change. Disappointing. (1910 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 4/20/2011 & rated 92 points: Very similar to bottle from December. This wine is its prime time right now. Spicy, peppery, brambly berries. (1874 views)
Tasted by radman1 on 4/17/2011 & rated 88 points: Velvety texture, with cherry and blueberry and smoke on nose. In its prime now, some tannins remain. (1886 views)
Tasted by gnr on 2/25/2011 & rated 62 points: Teasers and smelled like shower curtain (1771 views)
Tasted by Barnaby33 on 12/23/2010: Blueberry and plum, a touch of oak and alcohol on the nose. Beautiful fruity zin. Full bodied without being heavy. Definitely in its prime drinking window. (1960 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 12/1/2010 & rated 92 points: From a 375ml, pop and pour. Deep, dark ruby color. Peppery, briary berries, chocolate, and a touch or licorice on the nose. Full body with ripe, integrated tannins and good acidity. The pepper and brambly berries dominates the palate with some dried herbs coming in on the long finish. I've had several bottles of this wine and this is one of the best showings. Definitely in prime drinking window and should hold for at least a couple years. (1940 views)
Tasted by DougSamuel on 2/14/2010 & rated 91 points: Dark berry and bramble fruit. More earthy and 'french' than a typical zin. Restrained, not syrupy. Soft, pleasant tannins and cherry and vanilla notes on the finish. (2449 views)
Tasted by mmurry on 3/28/2009 & rated 92 points: Zinfandel, The Other Red Wine! (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had meat, bramble, floral notes, smoke, raspberry, and cherry. The palate was smooth, and had bramble, earth, cherry, raspberry, smoke, and earth. (3226 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 3/9/2009 & rated 92 points: 375 ml bottle, decanted for an hour. Deep, dark ruby color. Brambly zin berries, licorice, pepper, chocolate, and just a hint of alcohol on the nose. Full body with good acidity and solid, ripe tannins. Spicy, peppery berries, chocolate, and dried herbs on the palate. A fairly long finish with the peppery berries leading the way with just a hint of nice, toasty oak. Drinking very nicely, but a few more months of cellar time will help. (2737 views)
Tasted by bound4er on 10/18/2008 & rated 87 points: This wine needs some time - I knew it was a bit young to open but I could not resist. Typical dark ruby "Elyse" color. Lots of alcohol on the nose - it actually feels prickly. Nicer on the palate - the alcohol warmth blends in with some dark fruits and a full bodied mouth feel to produce a nice sipper. Revisit in a few months - I suspect my score will climb. (3107 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
