Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 2/12/2024: Salt and mineral and licorice on the nose. Very provocative. Salty and lively and very mineral. Kinda profound (1077 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 1/27/2024 & rated 94 points: Tasted at Fruits of the Vine 2024 at Edition Hotel Singapore. Not able to write down tasting notes, only rating score. (966 views)
Tasted by chatters on 9/18/2023: Troplong Mondot (Bottega Coco): Plums, a little red plum and red berries in support, again it has polished oak but slightly less obvious; chocolate. With time and agitation these aromas are joined by black and red currant. Juicy red and black fruits, silky tannins here, a little burr and tug is slightly drying, chocolate joins on the finish accompanied by some non-intrusive alcohol warmth. Okay. (1852 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 7/31/2023 & rated 92 points: Riper forward profile and dark fruits and baking spices mixed in. Shows some glossy oak influence on the finish. Fine somewhat austere tannins—we’ll managed in this challenging year. Quite good. (2081 views)
Tasted by Jason Wu on 7/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Lovely aroma of blueberry, black tea, star anise, cinnamon, roasted meat, black olives, licorice.
On the palate, first boil of black tea(英红9号头啖汤的味道), red plum. Impressive flavor intensity with medium plus finish. The alcohol is not shy but still well balanced by high acidity and fruits. (1952 views)
Tasted by houstonjeff@hotmail.com on 6/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Very young and should wait a few years to drink this wine. Powerful and silky so it should age well. (1990 views)
Tasted by remyworldpeace on 2/21/2023 & rated 89 points: Vertical and Lunch with Chateau Troplong Mondot - Singapore 2023: Strawberry and cream on nose. Weaker and less fruity; some under ripe strawberry with some spices. Lacks balance and is quite alcoholic and hot. This is also rather up front with a short finish. (2910 views)
 Tasted by levicn on 12/13/2022 & rated 91 points: (2483 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 11/23/2022 & rated 92 points: 20 Vintages of Troplong Mondot: This was a trainwreck of a vertical tasting. An average of meager 86.8 pts, only 6 wines with a rating of more than 90pts. Almost all wines pre 2017 and a winemaker/style change have dried out. Too much extraction and heavy oak treatment produced wines that did not age well, have no fruit and charm left. I don’t have group ratings but the sentiment in the room was similar (this was the fastest tasting ever with this group). It was a root day but that can’t explain everything. Also, the provenance or storage of the bottles was no issue (all bought En Primeur, stored perfectly since). Troplong Mondot seems to be a victim of a series of bad choices, mainly the wrong consultant. Luckily, the future looks brighter.

TN: Slightly truffly nose with dark red fruit, quite ripe to complement. A bit hollow mid palate but its not too ripe, not too drying. But not too interesting either. (3254 views)
Tasted by Brendel on 6/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Drank in a vertical lineup of Troplong Mondot in celebration of our anniversary and upcoming trip to St Emilion: 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019. Decanted and drank over 3 hours.

Garnet in color; not super dark, more brick.

The nose is strong in alcohol, dark cherries, dark berries, some light funk. Not really a complex nose. With some air, the cherries subside and violets emerge, fresh cut grass, fresh cut flowers.

On the palate, a lot of barely ripe cherries, a tartness, green, vibrant, good acidity. The mouthfeel is very elegant, surprisingly light; not as mouth-coating and opulent as the 2015 and 2018, not as perfectly balanced as the 2019. Fruit forward but not remotely flabby. I would say this is the “thinnest” of the four in terms of mouthfeel, but very nice.

I believe this is the first wine with the new ownership Aymeric de Gironde and shows a move towards elegance, that improves in 2018 and achieves near perfection in 2019. We are big fans of TM and this is excellent. $98. (2929 views)
Tasted by Lec617 on 3/11/2022 & rated 93 points: No frost damage to Troplong Mondot in 2017. Vibrant and energetic. Blackberry, mulberry, forest floor, earthy tone and a hint of floral. Well integrated, elegant yet powerful. The acidity is beautiful with some latte and light espresso finished. (2942 views)
Tasted by dream on 12/25/2021 & rated 93 points: Wow, is this good and it's drinking beautifully after a 3-hour decant. Classy and smooth with delicious flavors of dark fruits and bitter chocolate. Beautifully balanced and fine with perfect supple tannins. 93+ (2849 views)
Tasted by dclaggett on 10/25/2020: 14.5% abv. Dark crimson color, clear. On pnp, alcohol evident then blew off in 30min, black and red fruit, soft green notes, wood. Med plus weight in mouth, plenty of mouth drying tannins, decent acidity. Plenty of fruit on palate, a bit one dimensional today in structure and flavor, but this screams ripe St Emilion merlot, with lots of spicy oak that lingers on a very long finish. 92-94 today with upside. (4626 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 6/13/2020: Expected to like this more than I did. The backing off from the prior blockbustery style is already evident, but unfortunately the plummy fruit never managed a chance to come up for air from under the raw wood. Perhaps will show better with a few more months to come together or perhaps I am spoiled by so many recent 2016s. (6956 views)
Tasted by Alexander Smith on 1/18/2020 & rated 92 points: Bordeaux 2017 En Primeur - In Bottle Tasting (Montreal): A very elegant wine with quite a floral profile along with cassis plush and rich black fruit along with a chalky texture, crushed stones, fresh herbs, violets and a rich finish (4910 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 11/4/2019 & rated 92 points: Arvi 2017 in the bottle tasting at the Dolder Grand in Zurich. Main conclusions: 1) Less concentration and complexity than 2015 and 2016; 2) generally soft tannins and light structures; 3) often well approachable already. Not a vintage to store for future generations, but one where you probably won't have to wait for a decade or more to pop a bottle and is likely to offer drinking pleasure early on. Of the 20 wines tasted, my top picks would be Smith-Haut-Lafitte, Clinet, Chevalier Blanc, Pichon Lalande (all 96) followed by Leoville Barton, de Fargues and Valandrau (all 95). See the tasting story for some number crunching.

Tasting note:
Red and blue berries, had a whiff of sauerkraut initially, but disappeared over time. Fruity and pleasant palate, light but with tangible structure. Hope the initial off-note was an outlier. Would tread with caution here. (4183 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 7/14/2018 & rated 90 points: Barrel sample at BB&R 2017 en primeur tasting. Lovely nose, dark colour. Had that telltale 2011 excess acidity hence the score suffered but this is only a barrel sample and the final selection could be excellent. (6746 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 4/26/2018 & rated 95 points: Licorice, smoke, black cherry, plum and crushed rocks create the nose. On the palate, the wine is full bodied, sweetly authentic and luxuriously textured. There is more virtue in the fruit but less density and lower alcohol than in previous vintages. The wine shows more influence from the limestone, instead of the clay. This dramatic change in style is a matter of choice by the new director, Aymeric de Gironde who is seeking more aromatic complexity and balance over power and ripeness in the wine. The wine was produced from a blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.2% alcohol. The harvest took place September 18, finishing September 27. (4460 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Saint Emilion Grat Classified Growth, Classified Growths, Grands Crus Classes, GCC

In 1954, while the "Graves" growths had just published their own classification, the wine syndicate of Saint-Emilion, composed by wine growers, brokers and wine traders with the approval of the INAO - Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (A.O.C), decided to work on a classification for the wines of Saint Emilion. Initially, four grades were defined. These were reduced to two - First Great Classified Growth (A and B) and Great Classified Growth - in 1984.

As of Medoc's 1855 historical grading, the Saint-Emilion Great Classified Growth classification is not only based on qualitative criteria by tasting the wines on a ten years period previous to the assessment, but also on commercial considerations such as:
- sales price levels
- national and international commercial distribution
- the estate's reputation on the market

Properties who don't manage to join the club of about sixty Classified Growths are given the denomination of Great Growth ("Grand Cru"), while the remaining wineries of the A.O.C are simply reported as "Saint-Emilion". It is to be noted that the owners must officially apply to appear in the official classification. Thus for example the famous Chateau Tertre-Roteboeuf, whose quality and reputation would easily justify to be listed among the First Great Classified Growths, does not appear here by the will of its owner, François Mitjaville.

The Saint-Emilion Great Growth classification was revised in 1969, 1985, 1996 and 2006. The only two guaranteed vintage (A.O.C) who can apply to the classification are the "Saint-Emilion Grand Cru" and "Saint-Emilion" areas.

By grading 61 properties, the 2006 revision confirmed many growths from the former classification, but also caused a number of surprises and a few inevitable disappointments. Many observers thought that the impressive progression of Perse's Chateau Pavie since 1998 would be rewarded by an upgrade into the First Great Classified Growths (A) category, but finally such was not the case.

Among the estates promoted to the First Great Classified Growths B category are Chateau Troplong-Mondot and Pavie-Macquin, whose efforts made since the Nineties fully justify their new grade. It should be noted that no First Great Classified Growth was relegated to the lower Great Classified Growth class.

Promoted growths from the status of Great Growth ("Grand Cru") to Great Classified Growth ("Grand Cru Classe") are: Chateaux Bellefont-Belcier, Destieux, Fleur Cardinale, Grand Corbin, Grand Corbin-Despagne and Monbousquet.

The demoted growths from the status of Great Classified Growth to Great Growth are: Chateaux Bellevue, Cadet Bon, Faurie de Souchard, Guadet Saint-Julien, La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Belivier), La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Moueix), Lamarzelle, Petite Faurie de Soutard, Tertre Daugay, Villemaurine and Yon-Figeac. If the recent samples of some of the above mentioned properties may justify their current downgrade, there are great chances that estates like Bellevue, Tertre Daugay or Yon-Figeac will be upgraded to their previous rankings by the next revision in 2016 as the progresses noted after 2000, but not entering in the range of vintages (1993 - 2002) appointed for the criteria of selection for the 2006 classification, are noticable.

The two following estates have completely disappeared from the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classification: Curé-Bon-la-Madeleine (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Canon) and La Clusière (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Pavie).

Finally, no estate considered as "garagiste" has integrated the classification. Valandraud, Mondotte, Le Dome, Bellevue-Mondotte or Magrez-Fombrauge have, for the least, the potential to be ranked as Great Classified Growths. In sight of the very fine quality reached by the above mentioned estates in recent vintages as well as all the innovative wine making methods used by the "garagistes", it remains to be seen whether the authorities will dare to cross the line in 2016..?
