d'un beau fruit et d'une belle acidité.
Cerises, poivre, anis, herbes et
une pointe de menthol. Les tannins sont
charnus et la finale hyper longue montre un
peu de chauffe. (2093 views)
Tasted by Marvin77 on 3/13/2022 & rated 90 points: The 5 Stelle Sfursat is a really powerful and full bodied monster of a wine made from 100% Nebbiolo in Amarone Style. Like Amarone there are aromas of dark fruits like plum and raisins but also chocolate and tobacco. The wine is really nice sometimes but also a little overwhelming sometimes. (1412 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 12/31/2020: Crystal clear, deep, more garnet than ruby
Some over ripe raisiny aromas and sweet cherry flavors with some wood. Big and gutsy, almost a sweet feel, a bit hot (16%) and rather tannic, but unapologetic and fabulous if you like the style. Lots going on, but unclear if this will totally come together better with more time; it won’t be elegant. (2180 views)
Tasted by chatters on 11/28/2020: IWS Rest of Northern Italy tasting (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Polished oak, a little almost wood glue, concentrated dark fruits, plums, blackberry, plenty of sweet spice, a little plain chocolate on the nose. I'ts like a giant shouting in my mouth. Pronounced acid and tannins, pronounced flavours showing cocoa powder rather than plain chocolate, nutes, plums, a little residual sugar, medicinal herbs. This is a beast. (2381 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 6/14/2020: Good+. Not quite ready for my tastes, though I think I'm probably in the minority, i.e. there's plenty to enjoy now, too. Sappy strawberry, red and purple flowers, some resin, soil. Balanced, fleshy, with a good dose of structure. Finish is med/me+, and may well improve in the coming years. Huge step up from the base offering, but the kind of wine (specific to this producer's style) I really have to be in the mood to drink. I'd set the drink dates 2023-2032. recommended

Tasted by MS86 on 4/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Bottle 1 of 3 in my cellar -- in the first third of the drinking window and will lay the other two bottles down. Very closed out of the bottle but after 3 hour decant the wine is showing beautifully. Nose of plum, strawberry (strawberry jam), leather, chocolate, cardamom and subtle floral notes. High acidity, high alcohol, full bodied with medium+ tannins. Initial fruit flavours of strawberry and plum followed be a sweet and spicy combination of jam and cinnamon with a long, chocolate finish. (1568 views)
Tasted by CBRwineguy on 4/9/2020: Nebbiolo nights; 3/28/2020-4/17/2020: [From Coravin]

The appearance is clear and pale ruby in colour. Tears are visible.

The nose is clean. The aromas have a medium intensity and show notes of black fruit (black cherry jam), mineral (tar), red fruit (raspberry jam), oak (subtle resinous, spiced wood character), floral (dried roses), and bottle-age (subtle dirty leather). Swirling reveals additional notes of red fruit (strawberry). The wine is developing.

The palate is dry with high acidity, high alcohol, and full body. The high level tannins are ripe and suede in nature. The flavours have a pronounced intensity and show notes of red fruit (red cherry syrup, wild strawberry jam), black fruit (mulberry jam), oak (very subtle clove, subtle star anise), fruit development (dried fig), and floral characters (dried flowers, potpourri, dried roses, rose hip). The length is long and features additional notes of oxidation (subtle bitter almond), oak (subtle dark chocolate), and pungent spice (green peppercorn).

This is a very good quality wine. The flavours are very concentrated and have an amazing balance with the acidity and the alcohol. Slight warmth from the alcohol does show on the back palate, but the 16% alcohol (on the bottle) is largely held in check. The tannins provide a great structure to the wine and show great balance with the acidity. In its current state, the wine shows complexity with primary, secondary, and some tertiary characteristics (a wine of higher quality would show more complexity). The standout feature of this wine is the intense jammy and syrupy primary fruit core courtesy of the passito method. The secondary components (oak) are well-integrated; quite subtle and not awkwardly poking out. The finish has an amazing length that allows the flavours to linger and develop in a very interesting and enjoyable manner.

The wine drinks well now, but is suitable for ageing. The fruit shows great concentration, and the acid and tannin structure should support the wine as tertiary notes continue to develop. (1827 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 2/9/2020 & rated 88 points: Second Sunday Group: 2013 Barolo (Neil's): Cherry and red berry fruit aromas. The palate follows the bouquet; higher acid. Nice. 88-89 pts. (1445 views)
Tasted by rstark on 1/2/2020 & rated 93 points: This wine was so very interesting. The first impression was "light and elegant expression of Nebbiolo" with a nice layer of earthiness that appealed to my old-world sensibilities. But fortunately we had time to give it a couple hours to evolve and, it's a good thing we did ... that pushed my score up two or three points. The texture became richer (altho acid was still there), and the fruit profile went from reddish to dark-fruit, like one often finds with a complex Barolo. The leather became more pronounced, and this wine it even impressed our snobby dinner companions as it held it's own up against their high end Bordeaux. (1188 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/14/2019 & rated 90 points: Gordon's Festa d'Italia (Artists for Humanity Center - Boston MA): Walk around tasting. Huge step up. Red cherry and earth with complex layers already, even with its moderate concentration. Good length. (1854 views)
Tasted by Judgirlie162 on 7/15/2019 & rated 90 points: Bought for $72 at shop on Lake Como. Delicious! Full bodied. Dry. Nice balance between fruit, leather, a tad floral. (1171 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Valtellina

Valtellina is an alpine valley in the far north of Lombardy, bordering Switzerland, from the village of Berbenno to Tirano. It's been producing wine for over 2000 years. Today it is known for its bright, cherry-scented wines made from the Nebbiolo grape variety, known here as Chiavennasca (after the nearby town of Chiavenna). These come in two forms: the standard Rosso di Valtellina and its powerful, dried-grape Sfursat (Sforzato) form. With a few years of bottle age, gamey, leather-like notes will develop, and the crimson will turn to garnet with a brick-orange rim – the visual trademark of Nebbiolo-based wines. Situated in the Rhaetian Alps, about 60 miles NE of Milan, some of the steepest slopes in Europe with the most striking landscapes of the Alps. Requires mostly hand-harvesting. The soils here are typically alluvial: gravelly, well drained and rich in silica. They are littered with larger stones, which gather heat throughout the day and release it in the evening. Many producers here also make wines using the Alpi Retiche IGT designation.

The thin skin of the Nebbiolo grape, unlike the varieties used to make Amarone, and the practice of minimizing the amount of tannin extracted during vinification, unlike the traditional style of vinifying Barolo, creates a Nebbiolo wine unlike any other. The bright, cherry flavors and rose and violet aromas that are unmistakably Nebbiolo are still there, but the tannic backbone is much lighter, less obtrusive. This is alpine Nebbiolo. It has more in common with the Nebbiolo (locally called Spanna) grown in the Val D’Aosta or the Nebbiolo from Gattinara or Ghemme in the alpine hills of Alto Piemonte, than it does with Barolo or Barbaresco.
