Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Battersea James on 6/24/2023 & rated 90 points: Still getting the nutty, reductive characteristics that I got a year or so ago. However, I think some of the freshness and citrus has diminished. Still enjoyable but for me this is now on the decline so I would drink up! (265 views)
Tasted by fcf3 on 10/8/2022 & rated 92 points: Nicely balanced Chardonnay with just a hint of oak and a crisp clean finish. Really good for the price point . One of my go to Central Coast producers. (456 views)
Tasted by FunnyAboutWine on 7/2/2022 flawed bottle: Required several hours of decanting and then it opened up to orange blossoms and nice acid (457 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 6/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Prior bottle was 14 months ago and my notes were again consistent. Apple, light oak/vanilla/creaminess and some spice notes on the nose. Medium bodied with a mix of white orchard fruits upfront that start off cool and then gains density through the mid-body, such that the fruits then feel more warm, richer and more open. Overall, the fruit through the middle felt a bit more open than in prior bottles and perhaps in slightly better integration with the citrus notes, acidity and oak/vanilla on the backside. This wine is in a very good spot for current drinking. (567 views)
Tasted by Battersea James on 5/1/2022 & rated 92 points: Nutty, caramel on the nose. Quite reductive on the palate with good minerality. Citrus. Good acidity. Well balanced given the oak. Very enjoyable. (591 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 4/17/2021 & rated 92 points: Prior bottle was seven months ago and my notes were quite consistent. Citrus notes, white orchard fruits and some oak/vanilla creaminess on the nose. Medium bodied with a blend of white orchard fruit banded with citrus. The oak/vanilla actually serves to bring the two elements together so the white fruit feels defined and set off by the citrus qualities. This wine retains very good overall structure and continue to positively integrate as well as gain in balance. I'm considering getting more and if so, will open my next bottle in November 2021.  Tasted by la turque on 11/28/2020 & rated 91 points: Delicious. Buttery, oaky, deep, reasonably structured with decent complexity. What one would expect from a well made California Chardonnay. (1145 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 9/11/2020 & rated 92 points: Prior bottle was almost 10 months ago and this wine has developed quite positively in that time. Lemon, white orchard fruits and balanced vanilla notes on the nose. Medium bodied and felt very reminiscent of White Burgundy. especially on the cooler side. The combination of well defined white orchard fruit, lemon and other citrus notes bound together with the creaminess and vanilla from the oak worked better than I'd hoped. The wine showed good density, especially through the middle along with excellent contrast between the richer and more tart notes. Generally, I'm not a fan of oak, but its use here contributed positively to overall balance; it felt like a positive component rather than an overpowering quality. This wine might not have the depth of some of Chanin's other chardonnay's, but it more than makes up for that with precision and balance. I was tempted to move it up a point (given how well it has developed), but I'll reserve judgement until my next bottle in June/July 2021 and decide then if this trend continues. Will also probably pick up some more in the interim while it's still available. (984 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 11/24/2019 & rated 92 points: All white orchard on the nose with some earthy creaminess in the background. Medium bodied with white orchard fruit upfront, deepening through the middle noticeably and adding hints of richer tropical qualities behind. The depth of fruit here is impressive and hinting at additional future complexity. Citrus notes and acidity come in on the backside and provide the hallmark of this wine; balance. There's excellent tartness on the finish, but never out of balance with the upfront fruit. All the various elements (fruit depth, complexity, structural notes) all seemed to be working well together and the result was better than the sum of its parts. Showing quite well at present and should continue to improve with time. Next bottle for me no sooner than June/July 2020. (1272 views)
Tasted by srh on 9/21/2019: Winebar [1 Rosé, 3 Whites, 8 Reds, & 6 *shared* bottles] from 09/20/19 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): “Hand harvested early in the mornings of Aug 26th & Sept 1st at 22.4° Brix from this vyd of sandy soils, high elevation (900 ft), & cool, marine influence; Pressed & directly put into FR oak barrels (10% new) to ferment. The wine stayed there for 15 mos on its lees & was then racked & lightly fined before being bottled unfiltered in Feb of 2018. 700 cases produced @ $35 sugg retail.”

N: Closed; Butter atop lemons with notes of minerals?

P: Med body; Very RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish OAK/frt beautifully counterbalanced by an acidity which fairly subtly takes control into the LONG, tangy/swt finish with occasional glimpses of very, VERY slight bitterness. For now & the next 9-12 mos -- 'fore the (oaky?) bitterness wins out. My VG-/EXC-, the higher being arguable re QPR for this style™. 92 pts ea Dunnuck & Vinous (Galloni), and 91 WA. [Check with this vendor if interested in their *very* COMPETITIVE price!]

™While this has notably > oak/malolactic than *I* prefer, it DOES have the acidity for food, & @ least from THIS vendor, would seem VERY nicely priced for those who seek such a style! (1342 views)
Tasted by Filippospat on 2/3/2019 & rated 92 points: A usual New World oaked Chardonnay nose with ripe Melon, Pineapple, Mango. A hint of lemon and grapefruit. Hazelnut, Toast, Biscuit, and pastry cream. Some butter and fresh cream cheese.
Very rich with huge intensity of Candied Lemon, Grapefruit, Melon and Pineapple. Full bodied with refreshing acidity and a Buttery core. Long fruity and sour aftertaste. (959 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
