Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 83 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Quarked on 4/25/2024 & rated 90 points: First night this was medium-to-full-bodied with muted fruits. Tasted blind, I would have guessed a more modern-style Bordeaux rather than a CA cab. Enjoyable, but not a strong QPR. Second night I found it had fallen apart, and gave me little enjoyment, except in the braising liquid for some short ribs. Score based on first night, obviously. (194 views)
Tasted by Carib on 2/28/2024 & rated 88 points: medium length finish; lovely fruit; well resolved tannins; very much enjoyed with a rack of lamb; a bit one dimensional, quite overpriced (577 views)
Tasted by Be.Lee on 1/26/2024 & rated 82 points: I can echo others on this review. Expected more for wine of this price range, especially with now 8 years of cellaring. light body. Not my style. Drank like cheap bordeaux. (748 views)
Tasted by golfhawk on 12/28/2023 & rated 88 points: Not sure about the critics reviews as I found it a bit tannic and herbal. Could be better with age but the fruit is light. Wait on the others and hope that it comes around. (790 views)
Tasted by ddingley on 12/12/2023 & rated 91 points: Decent wine but not memorable as a Mid priced Napa Cab. Moderate weight, fairly simple with pleasant red fruit and smooth tannins. (854 views)
Tasted by nrjessup on 12/12/2023 & rated 91 points: Bright and acidic with raspberry and cherry notes on nose and palette. Lingering moderate finish with a noticeable chalky undertone. (755 views)
Tasted by Z1nnfull on 11/16/2023 & rated 89 points: Disappointing given the price. Certainly a Napa Cab, but after 8 years & all day breathing, fell short on complexity and depth. For what it’s worth, this is robust and fruit forward with not much finesse.
I had a 1999 Niebaum Coppala upon retirement many years back which was one of the best Napa wines we ever had, but this fell way short of that. (770 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 8/8/2023 & rated 95 points: My last of these from a sixpack I got at a good price. Most seemed a bit off to me, but this one sang like a bird - the dryness was particularly classy, along with beautiful fruit. Wish I had more. Might need to try other vintages. (1344 views)
Tasted by nrjessup on 5/30/2023 & rated 90 points: Inkly purple in glass with cranberry and red fruited notes. Muted tobacco notes with a lush fruity mouthfeel and a lengthy chalky finish. Drinking and punching above its weigh class in my opinion. (1202 views)
Tasted by DannyM on 4/29/2023: Had with the Llanos at our house with apps. The wine lacked fruit, didn’t really open up even after decanting for two hours. (1094 views)
Tasted by SlapTheBag on 4/10/2023: After long decant wine was still a little muted on the nose, but lost of fruit, vanilla and oak. Palate was much better with a full bodied you would expect. (1265 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 3/23/2023 & rated 89 points: This was quite stifling. Got a six pack from GrandVin at the seemingly amazing price of about $44 after shipping (no sales tax, at the time), and I think the low price was because they were off. (1514 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 1/25/2023 & rated 87 points: Disappointing but can't detect a fault, just not nice. Flat on the palate. Medium to full weight. Dark fruits. Short finish and straightforward. Suggest selling rather than drinking. (1478 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 12/13/2022 & rated 93 points: Better than the last one 1.5 years ago. This is coming around more with edges getting evened out, more depth, more expressive, but still somewhat hollow and thin. Am guessing this is better in other vintages, though I normally enjoy the '15 Napa vintages (along with '14 and '16). (1728 views)
Tasted by azwino on 10/1/2022: Decanted for about an hour. Was initially still closed; but started expressing stronger aroma closer to the two hour mark. Dark fruit, with some mineral and earthiness; one taster mentioned green notes and tobacco. Notes of classic Rutherford dust, good finish. (1708 views)
Tasted by Jag76 on 9/25/2022 & rated 92 points: The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It tastes like blackberry, cherry and plum. The body is medium/full. The wine has polished texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. (1541 views)
Tasted by Pedroel on 7/28/2022 & rated 94 points: If this is classic Napa cab, I’m all for more of same. Great QPR. (1961 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 7/16/2022 & rated 95 points: Black fruit, cedar, cassis, chocolate, herbal notes, finishes smooth. A (1858 views)
Tasted by Joelene on 6/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Similar notes as last time (over a year ago), but now this has developed a bit more bouquet, maybe a touch more black fruit and this bottle displayed a healthy dose of Rutherford dustiness that wasn’t as noticeable on the last bottle. The verdict remains the same, that this is a very albeit slightly more classicly styled Napa Cab than what is typically produced nowadays; that is drinking nicely now but clearly promises to rise to another level after a few more years on its side. 92+ (1597 views)
Tasted by JCGuthrie on 6/25/2022 & rated 92 points: Out of 375. Right out of the bottle this smells fantastic, with savory black fruit - mostly black plums - with some mineral and rich dark earth. Shows a touch of heat. Still very tannic on the palate, with more plum and a slightly tart finish. Good now, I think this will be even better in 3 to 7 years. (1325 views)
Tasted by Romz on 5/26/2022 & rated 91 points: Wonderful value for money and awesome pop & pour. This bottle was a treat for my team for all the hard work they out in this month to cross the finishing line with a bang. Ruby core with purplish rims. Nose; blackcurrant, cassis, stewed red berries, mocha vanilla notes, baking spices and hint of green pickled olives. Palate; medium body and acidity with mouthwatering & juicy tannins. Initially firm, 30 mins in the decanter opened this wine up to layers of flavors & bouquet. Long & velvety finish (400 views)
Tasted by Ernestas on 4/1/2022 & rated 92 points: There is 88% of CS, 6% CF, 4.5 PV, 1% Merlot and 0.5% of Malbec. Wine is aged for 18 months in FR oak, 50% new. Medium+ intensity complex aroma of cassis, smoke, cherries, chocolate, liquorice, tobacco, baking spice, plum hints. Full body, well built structure with concentrated fresh black fruits which just starting to develop and blossom, promising future awaits. Mid palate shows medium+ acidity, firm and fleshy structured tannins, salty touch at the finish. (1881 views)
Tasted by DragonflyCellar on 1/14/2022 & rated 85 points: Tasted through a Coravin sampling. Very muted and far too young. Paired with a ribeye but it was very difficult to get any pallet notes. Nose was good full of early minerality and fresh cherry.
Definitely needs a multi hour decant to get into it's true nature (2111 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 1/1/2022 & rated 92 points: Decanted and enjoyed with a chargrilled ribeye steak, sautéed mushrooms and a spinach salad. Nicely aromatic and flavorful with purple flowers, black and red cassis, black and red berries, tobacco, and dusty earth. Fruits are ripe, but the structure provides balance. Developing, but lots of upside potential. Drink through 2035. Outstanding! (1971 views)
Tasted by tjin on 12/9/2021 & rated 91 points: A rich, fruity nose with hints of vanilla and bark. The palate is more subtle than a typical California cab, with a mix of black and red fruit as well as some earth and tobacco. Long, smooth finish. (2028 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
