Tasted by Beeck10 on 10/5/2023 & rated 95 points: The bottle suffered from traveling , I bought it 5 years ago and it was on a auction , god knows where the bottle came from , but it was almost perfect except the structure in the glass , a little bit cloudy , the nose was great nothing “terretiare “ or really old , but still some sweet and leather also Tabacco , also the pallet had still some power ! But I drunk a better bottle 6 years ago and was one of my best Rhône moments ever ! So a little disappointed because great expectations but more then ok ! The other glass was a mouline 1988 and that bottle was real razor sharp in nose and mouth , also the color was near to perfect and still young , it came out of the cellar from who bought it 35 years ago and it will last another 20 years , what a bottle ! 99/100 Probably in the beginning a less better bottle the landonne 85 , but much better conservation and to drink now ! But still happy to drink both of those wines :) (596 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 11/19/2022 & rated 98 points: blind, together with Monte Bello 85 and La Landonne 85
I guessed the common ground was the grape variety namely Syrah but I was only one third was correct. For me by far the best wine in this flight. I had no idea of the vintage but one in the group guessed right. Spicy, powerful but still closed so no rush to empty the bottles. Some earthy and black cherry notes. 97-98 (1507 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 10/25/2022 flawed bottle: Sadly the condition is not good. (1348 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 10/20/2021 & rated 98 points: Rustic bloody amazing wine. (1926 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 10/15/2021 & rated 100 points: Holy Moly! What a wine!!! La Landonne takes the longest to come around of the three La La wines, but it is worth the wait. Loaded with iron, earth, smoke, crushed stone, pepper, dark cherry, blackberry and red plum liqueur, this is one of those compelling wines. Full-bodied and intense, the wine coats your palate with waves of smoky fruit, freshness and power. The seamless finish hangs with you for well over 60 seconds. Not all of the pricey wines are worth the price of the ticket. This one is! (3862 views)
Tasted by vetty on 7/16/2021 & rated 96 points: Drinking with the other two LAs from 85.
I like La Landonne the most b/c La Mouline for me is too soft and smooth, and La Turque (which should be right in the middle) is even more rough compare to La Landonne. Maybe b/c of the bottle difference. I think this time La Landonne is right in the middle and has a little bit of everything.
------
Slightly lighter in color compare to La Mouline
On nose: purple fruit, leather, animal.
I can feel the granular sensation of tannin. At the beginning, not enough acidity and it's flat. But after aeration, the sharpness and acidity were coming out. It has great intensity, and very broad. (1657 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 7/15/2021 & rated 98 points: Rhone & Champagne x BBQ Meats: Perfect fill. Most structured and robust of the trio, at least on the nose, which actually softened so much with time. Heavy but soft tannin, high acidity, purple and blue fruit, smoke, undertonned minerality, animalistic, a sweet core of meatiness, mild balanced white pepper, sharp spice, lingering cherry acidity. Amazing harmony with all these flavors, so youthful, on the darker side of the trio, but still so fresh. On the palate mind-blowing energy, so lifted, not heavy at all on its own, with sweet-sour acidity, mellow, balanced, graceful, sooooooo long and sooooo backwards. 98-100 (1732 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 3/20/2021 & rated 97 points: Tasted blind, this wine had a red/purple center and red rims. The high intensity nose offered up mocha, minerals, roasted meat, plums, and black spices.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with rounded tannin, solid acidity, and great length. It was beautifully integrated and balanced.

Wow, this was an impressive bottle. It should last at this level for 10+ years. (1533 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 2/2/2019: La Tablee: Celebratory Dinner (BYO) (26 Bridge Street, Brooklyn): Young and tight. Lots of pepper and dried fruits and a bit more tannin. There was something that seemed not quite right compared to some other bottles that we've had, but it was still tasty. (2818 views)
Tasted by Vinomnivore on 3/21/2018 & rated 98 points: Still quite youthful with primary fruit flavors present and layers of tertiary notes emerging. A fantastic experience now, but this should still have many good years of interesting development ahead. Would love to find more. (2748 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 3/20/2018 & rated 94 points: Guigal LaLa Dinner II (Chef's Club NYC): Beautiful too, comparable to the ‘88 Turque, but a few gears behind in terms of aromatic expression. Dense earth-influenced palate. Last wine of the night and notes obviously falling apart. (3342 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/20/2018: Acker Guigal La La dinner (Chef's Club - 275 Mulberry Street): This is again really something. The last wine of a flight that was just crazy good. Spice and herbal and fruit and again a wine that I put into consideration for WOTN. Not a bad end to a pretty fantastic meal. (2951 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 2/10/2018 & rated 96 points: Alvin Blind. Serious stuff with long life ahead. Absolutely no rush. (2748 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 4/15/2017 & rated 95 points: A classic La La. Big, bold yet nuanced and full of awesomeness. As a comp to the 85 Chave in the next glass this is the tale of two very different styles. Both wines are amazing but this La La is far bigger and a lot more in your face. Would appear this will go forever. Although after some air this is showing a little more complexity and is becoming more delicate and feminine. Really good juice. (2562 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 4/13/2017 & rated 94 points: Mixed 1985 Dinner (Amali): Very pretty and floral nose. This is a very intricate and complex nose, but it is subtle and harder to read in the context of a larger dinner / tasting. Delivers big and powerful flavour on the palate. Juicy, meaty, savoury, delicious. Came back to a glass of this after two hours and it was much better. Robust and complete. Far darker and more intense than the Chave. (2508 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 1/30/2017 & rated 93 points: Good for the first hour but started to display frayed edges. More of a two-dimensional bottle than three-dimensional. 93-94 - (1898 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 11/9/2016 & rated 92 points: SLDS November 2016: Ash, tobacco, raspberry, musk, bacon and a meaty brett character that doesn't distract at first. Still plenty of fruit on the palate that is tinged by sweetness, tannins are fine and still doing a good job to provide structure. Lovely texture. With more time in the glass the brett starts to show more, so I quickly finished my glass while it remained under control. Probably not up to the very best bottles of this wine, but still great. (2694 views)
Tasted by DrinkBordeaux on 11/5/2016 & rated 96 points: First dinner of the L.A. wine trip (The Bazaar at SLS, Beverly Hills, California): Drinking extremely well right now, this was one of the more interesting wines of the evening. But I have to say that this wine was holding back a bit, and may still need more evolution. Blackberry, black cherry, brown spices, roasted meat, smoke, and pepper. Beautifully textured on the palate, with a warm spiciness that just enhanced the experience. Still has a solid tannic structure. but nothing obtrusive. A long, memorable finish. While it wouldn’t be criminal to drink this now, you may be rewarded if you wait a few more years on this one. (2668 views)
Tasted by EhrlichDY on 12/18/2015 & rated 97 points: Holiday Lunch including Vogue Musigny, Guigal La Landonne, and an Incredible Arnoux Suchots (Charlie Palmer Steak): Pop and pour. This is a legendary wine that delivers in spades. The wine is fruit driven with notes of blackberry but also carries some savory meaty elements along with some spice. Tannin and oak have completely integrated providing a joyous experience. I often find that young Northern Rhone wines can be heavy but this wine has shed its fat leaving behind a beautiful package. (2958 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 12/10/2015 & rated 93 points: Ripe red fruit, light savory spices including white pepper, and dusty soil. Light tannins on the backpalate. 30 minute decant, needed more. A somewhat muted bottle versus what this wine can be. 93-94 (2281 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 11/3/2015 & rated 95 points: Soft nose at first giving off tart cranberry and other sharper red berries. Some smoke, bacon, and cured meats emerge as well. Tertiary and earth-driven on the palate with nice underbrush, and thin, dry soil. The wine improves immensely with time and begins to show intriguing notes of iron, red soil, and rust intermittent with ripe red cherry and blueberry. The closing sips were the best. (2513 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 8/31/2015 & rated 100 points: Few wines reach this level of quality. This mind blowing cornucopia of flavor, aromatics, fruits, and rich, exotic textures is impossible to ignore. At 30 years of age, this is really coming on strong. It's scary to think, but it will probably be even better in a decade, or longer! The older I get, or is it the older Guigal La Landonne gets, I continue to gain a greater appreciation of this vineyard from Guigal, placing it above La Turque and even La Mouline in certain vintages. (4541 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 5/31/2015 & rated 96 points: Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red center and some orange at the rim. The medium+ intensity nose offered up mocha, black cherries, violets, and brown spices.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with great richness, lovely balance, and fantastic length.

These wines never cease to amaze. While this is great now it may well even pick up points with additional age. I hope to find out! (2481 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 5/20/2015 & rated 99 points: wow an epic wine. Clear laser focused flavors. Rustic iron yet just elegant and well delineated. The Jaboulet Chapelle of same vintage didn't even come close. This was so much more cleaner and nice. (1712 views)
Tasted by Lord Rayas on 3/24/2015 & rated 96 points: decanted for 3hrs. definitely the most masculine among the LaLaLa's and somewhat surprisingly bettered the other two tonight. rich and complex with plenty of life ahead. (2173 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

La Landonne

COTE ROTIE
"The Landone"
Côte-Rôtie “La Landonne” completes this famous trilogy. An immense and pure wine with intense flavors and deep colour, this is the perfect wine for ageing.

“The treasures are born in the very heart of the most legendary of the illustrious plots of the Maison Guigal. These precious bottles are as coveted as they are rare and have benefited from extreme care at every stage of the process, from the vine to the cellars. They are the sole embodiment of the inspiration and inheritance of centuries of viticulture in an exceptional terroir”

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
