Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 59 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by AFM87 on 8/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Classic aged Brunello. Opened one hour before serving and then decanted solely for sediment. In a great spot with several years left to go. Paired perfectly with Sunday dinner of paccheri, meatballs and sausage (347 views)
Tasted by Milos on 7/14/2022 & rated 92 points: This was a part of 1997 and 1999 Tuscan tasting including 3 Brunellos and 2 Super Tuscans, same producers from each year. Very enjoyable wine. This may be the only Brunello where I enjoyed the 1999 more than the 1997. The nose is forward with wild dark cherry and raspberry; Oak still notable but in balance. Very fine ripe tannins provide structure. Decent finish. (674 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 7/13/2021: I tried a bottle of this two months ago and was less than thrilled - unfortunately, this bottle will not change my opinion. I just had a glass of the '99 Caparzo BdM, and that is much livelier on the palate than this wine, which, like my last note in May, seems ponderous and slightly over the hill. There is even a raisined note on the nose - not quite maderized, but overripe fruit. I am getting towards the end of a case I bought on release, and this is one Brunello that I preferred when it was younger. (1434 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 5/12/2021: I haven't had a bottle of this in a while (last TN was 2018), and I'm not loving this right now. Feels a little heavy/ponderous on the palate for a Sangiovese. Ripe red & black fruit on the nose. I'll have to check out another bottle soon to see if this was just off somehow or if the wine is actually in decline. The cork here was pristine for a 20 year old bottle, so no apparent defect here in that regard. (1394 views)
Tasted by vagrantone on 6/6/2020 & rated 82 points: Ultimately a disappointing Brunello.
Magnum bottle in pristine condition, beautiful cork, decanted about 2 hours before dinner.
The hue was that of a young wine and the wine showed few signs of aging.
However, it largely lacked complexity and balance .
Noticeable heat, oak and overripe fruit. None of the beautiful aromas normally found in mature Brunello from quality producers.
Vintage considerations aside, this wine shows a strong stylistic change from the beautiful 1990 vintage.
This kind of non-descript heat, over-ripeness, low acidity monolithic wine you can find just about anywhere around the World; not worthy of a Brunello designation.
If this is new style, then I will pass. (1522 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 9/13/2018: A darker translucent ruby; earthy red & black fruits on the nose.

Fully mature, decent acidity, nice persistence - very likable right now, so if you have this in the cellar, no hurry, but it's worth checking out. (1948 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 8/2/2018: Ripe, earthy red and black fruit on the nose. A touch of menthol here as well - love the nose here.

Not as impressive on the palate as the bottle I drank last year - good, but seemingly losing a gear as it's gotten older. (1826 views)
Tasted by Rcapria on 5/17/2017 & rated 90 points: second one I had in about a year or so very juicy leathery notes done maturing i think.... (2040 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 2/9/2017: If CT is accurate, this is my first bottle in more than a year. Color is a dark translucent ruby; "intoxicating" and mature nose - a lot going on here.

More red-fruited on the palate, seamless, nice persistence - this is drinking now as a mature wine, probably best destined for consumption over the next 3-5 years, although it wouldn't shock me if it still drank well for another decade. (2195 views)
Tasted by mike410 on 11/24/2016 & rated 89 points: Slight bricking color. Nice fruit still around but overall it's past it's drinking date. It probably was much better a few years back. (2087 views)
Tasted by CHINACAT on 7/9/2016 & rated 89 points: Dark red. Some earthiness on the nose. Dark faded fruits, some secondary flavors, and a firm, somewhat harsh finish. This bottle seemed a bit past its prime, but still provide some enjoyment. (1986 views)
Tasted by Topper on 11/17/2015 & rated 92 points: Very pretty wine. Completely resolved and likely at its peak now with dark cherry and plum fruit and some secondary earth, tobacco and leather notes. A nice dinner wit. (2802 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 9/14/2015: Color is a dark translucent ruby; great nose on this popped & poured wine; definitely leans to red fruits, with a nice frutto di bosco accent.

Very smooth and open/accessible; like the Caparzo I posted about earlier this week, this baby is open for business! If you have this in the cellar, definitely worth a look right now. (2154 views)
Tasted by meatman on 6/14/2014 & rated 91 points: Plenty of life left... (3295 views)
Tasted by Robert_Lyle on 4/2/2014: Garnet/brick at rim. Expressive, elegant nose of black cherry, leather, tar and something very mineral. Lovely secondary notes bring complexity, but the freshness, the acidity of Sangiovese endures. Excellent. (497 views)
Tasted by Villon on 12/22/2013 & rated 89 points: Un vin plus subtil, moins expressif que ses compagnons, au nez évolué et épicé, peu d'élevage, acidité marquée, notes d'évolution évidentes. Très bien. (3262 views)
Tasted by phil the agony on 12/20/2013 & rated 89 points: Bonbon...je me croyais en c9p...très bon mais courte final... (2859 views)
Tasted by Rcapria on 11/28/2013 & rated 90 points: needed a lot of decanting...long finish (2581 views)
Tasted by tkoby11 on 1/5/2013 & rated 97 points: The WOTN for me. Simply put this was perfect balanced and in a striking state of consumption at this time. Elegant, persistent, round, long, complete.
Color: A deep red core revealed red edge that showed little to its 13 years of age.
Nose & Palate: The nose was classic, redolent of cherries, earth, fresh leather, and with a touch more oak from the raising it sees in smaller barrique. The palate was elegant, yet powerful, light on its feet, yet persistently strong. This was the iron fist in the velvet glove, this I am sure of. A long and silky finish was framed by medium to fine grain tannin. (3123 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 9/18/2012 & rated 92 points: Drinking beautifully. Somewhat restrained nose, with deep burgundy color. Great body and length. Earth and cigar and cherry, with well integrated tannins. Really improved with a 2-hour decant. (3333 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 6/12/2012 & rated 91 points: Dark fruited Brunello without seeming overly modern or "manufactured" in any way. Was the runner up in a recent tasting of 4 well-reviewed Brunelli, overshadowed by an excellent '01 Silvio Nardi Manachiara. (3289 views)
Tasted by weiny on 3/11/2012 & rated 94 points: Sehr viel Druck und volle Tannine. Fein :) (3528 views)
Tasted by dclaeys on 2/15/2012 & rated 92 points: A bit of brown in the color indicates it might be close to declining, but had a full body, ripe cherry flavor that grew more complex with each sip. As the meal progressed, I could pick up hints of lilac, cinnamon and even nutmeg along with the full-throttle fruit. It made a great complement to a Valentine's Day dinner built around grilled veal chops topped with rosemary. Looking back, I could have decanted it sooner to smooth out some of the edges encountered at first, but it remains a memorable bottle. Just don't wait too much longer.... (3693 views)
Tasted by Ilkkaw on 11/14/2011 & rated 93 points: Just perfect at the moment. Drink it in the next 5 years. (3006 views)
Tasted by Brandtholdt on 8/13/2011 & rated 93 points: Very nice wine.
Very developed, and I will say, that the window for the wine is now and a couple of years, the sooner the better. (2952 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.

Altero

Altero was created back in 1983 with the intention of making a more modern style of Brunello. Altero is a proprietary wine that is distinguished by being aged in 500-liter French oak tonneaux for a period of two years rather than for three years in the large new Slavonian oak barrels used for the traditional Brunello. Altero completes its aging requirement by spending two years in the bottle before release.

In 2000, sixteen years after the first release of Altero, the new regulations for Brunello confirmed the validity of this innovative alternative. In effect the formula for Altero anticipated the new trend for Brunello, and at Poggio Antico today it is possible to choose between a new and a classic style of Brunello.

Since its introduction Altero has received very favorable reviews and enjoyed great commercial success, so every year an increasing part of the crop is set aside for it.

Altero is a deep and intense ruby red, which shows great concentration. The bouquet is wide, very fruity, persistent and elegant. The taste is full, warm, and round with a complex structure and fine ripe tannins. This wine is very smooth on the palate and suited for a long bottle aging.

In addition to the traditional 750 ml bottles, Poggio Antico produces a limited number of Magnums (1,500 ml) of Altero. In exceptional vintages, Double Magnums (3,000 ml) are also released. Both these special formats are packaged in beautiful wooden cases, which are also available - upon request - for the regular bottle format (750 ml.).
