Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by fitchbuck on 8/8/2022 & rated 90 points: Good but not anywhere near great. At $30, I paid well less than the CT average - but still feel I overspent. (798 views)
Tasted by Theamaronefan on 11/16/2020 & rated 91 points: Ruby red fruit bomb. Cherry jam, plum with some spice. A pleasant dessert wine. (1405 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 11/22/2019 & rated 91 points: consistent with notes of 7/29/2019 (1906 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 7/29/2019 & rated 91 points: spice cake, caramel and fig flavors. Nice port like desert wine. (1900 views)
Tasted by CharleneK on 4/6/2019 & rated 94 points: A real crowd pleaser (1931 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 10/19/2018 & rated 91 points: See previous notes. This is fun port like dessert wine. Went great with cherry pie. (1459 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 6/6/2018 & rated 91 points: A jammy, fruity ruby portlike dessert wine. Fruity yet interesting. A fun dessert wine to accompany rich desserts. Del Dotto never fails to deliver. (1002 views)
Tasted by JWH6 on 5/14/2017 & rated 91 points: Really nice dessert wine aka port. Big cherry up front, smooth on the finish, very nice. (1545 views)
Tasted by csimm on 6/18/2016 & rated 90 points: Del Dotto Barrels & Beasts 2016 (Del Dotto Winery): Typical Port with a stewed plum and brandy-like vanilla bean and chocolate note. Not too rich, sweet, or syrupy (which was a good thing). Paired well with the dessert.

Served with Raspberry Parfait; yogurt gelato, raspberry sorbet, house made granola. (4260 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 10/6/2015 & rated 92 points: Del Dotto Cave Barrel Tasting with India.
Appearance: Garnet and Brick red.
Nose: Smells like brandy (first port so that's probably why its all I smell).
Palate/Finish: Chocolate, dried fruit. FIG NEWTONS.
Opinion: Very silky, first port so for now I have nothing to compare it to. Was more pleasant than I thought a port would be. (Only portish wine I have had was from VA, so maybe that's why port is kind of off putting to me) (1797 views)
Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 8/19/2015: Del Dotto - Cave Tasting (Napa, CA): Sweet, decent acidity, fruity.
Moderate RS
High alcohol
Tastes like a very simple Port.
Not a lot of secondaries. No notable oxidation/aged character. (1692 views)

Port Blend

Over a hundred varieties of grapes (castas) are sanctioned for port production, although only five (Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional) are widely cultivated and used.
- Mayson (1999), Port and the Douro, p. 93

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
