Tasted by SLOFred on 9/6/2022 & rated 93 points: An incredible BDX blend from Paso. Very well crafted and drinking nicely right now. (427 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 8/16/2022 & rated 93 points: This is great. We had a Calcareous Tres Violet before this, which is one of my "go to" wines as it is always exceptional. We had lots of time left to relax and drink, so I came up with this after the Tres Violet. It just made the Tres Violet taste ordinary! This was just plain exceptional. (326 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 1/10/2022 & rated 93 points: Just a delicious wine. As good as any Napa BDX blend, often better. Calcareous is by no means cheap, but their wines always deliver. (401 views)
Tasted by SLOman on 8/21/2021 & rated 92 points: Calcareous makes wonderful wines! I rated this a 92 because it is better than most here in SLO County. Frankly, I have no yardstick after about a 92 or 93. Like, what wine would you give a 97 and not a 98? I wish, and hope, that I could taste the difference. But, as an old friend says, "It's good if you like it". And I like this wine very much! (379 views)
Tasted by as4beatles on 8/8/2021 & rated 94 points: Great blend. Cherry, light pepper finish and a touch of dry. (385 views)
Tasted by kevrob822 on 8/6/2020 & rated 91 points: Nice deep aroma. Taste is rich with lots of dark fruit, oak and Smooth, nice tannins with medium acidity. I’d give this 91 Points, but @ the winery price, I can only give it a Good QPR. (481 views)
Tasted by oaxaca90049 on 6/22/2019: Absolutely delicious right out of the bottle. Really a pleasure to drink. Gone in a flash. (754 views)

Calcareous

Producer website

Pronounced kal-kâr'ē-Əs. WINE LABEL: The beautiful western hils of Paso Robles caught our eye. The exceptional Calcareous (limestone) sil, so rare to California, gained our attention. The ocean breezes caressed our souls as the southwestern exposure warmed our hearts. The terroir replicates some of the most famous vineyard regions of France.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
