Community Tasting Notes (average 93 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jumbo-Jet on 3/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Heavy aromas of raisins and dates in the nose and on the palate. Elegant body with good residual sweetness. Alas the raisins and the elegance are not perfectly in tune. Clean and enjoyable to drink nonetheless. (631 views)
Tasted by lesliecarolgriffith@gmail.com on 12/31/2020 & rated 96 points: Just wonderful. Inky, dark and complex. Loved it. (1195 views)
Tasted by CHINACAT on 6/27/2020 flawed bottle: Oxidized. May have been a storage issue. (1165 views)
Tasted by DannyB1991 on 10/4/2019: Lively and well balanced. Drank with steak after a three hour decant, probably doesn't need so much time in the decanter, but certainly made for a great companion to the meal. (1443 views)
Tasted by mhudes on 9/29/2019 & rated 94 points: Erev Rosh Hashana dinner with family and friends at Saul's in Berkeley. Two hour decant. Very similar notes to the ones I wrote in June. Went nicely with my beef brisket. My last bottle of this delicious wine. (1386 views)
Tasted by mhudes on 6/12/2019 & rated 95 points: At Joan and Marsh's house for dinner. Excellent CdP! (Even better than the bottle of this I had last year). Deep ruby in color., with herbs and sweet spices on the nose. In the mouth, I get dark cherries, plums, red licorice and a bit of smoked meat. Lots of CdP garrigue in the background.Very complex (this wine definitely has character). Full bodied, yet elegant. Good finish. (1168 views)
Tasted by PLKMTK on 10/8/2018: 5/18 Drinking well; lot's of life left (1109 views)
Tasted by mhudes on 6/18/2017 & rated 93 points: Fathers Day dinner at Zaytoon. Decanted for 2 hours. Nice nosse of "Garrigue" type spices. Initially a bit chalky on the palate, but this blew off quickly. Some dark fruit (plums and cherries), licorice, melba toast, and more spice. Definitely has complexity. Good finish. Should be good for 5 more years. Went well with my lamb & beef kebabs with couscous. (1703 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 5/25/2016 & rated 95 points: CDP All-Star Tasting (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of smoke, sweet vanilla bean, dark red cherries, meat, bitter grilled herb. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (16%), grippy high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red velvet fruit cake, confected dark red cherries, black cherries, licorice, smoke, meat, vanilla bean, bitter grilled herb. Long finish.
Outstanding quality. Highly complex CDP with very serious concentration.
100% Grenache. Vines between 60-80 years' old. Destemmed. Fermentation in closed concrete tanks. Matured in tanks for 14-16 months.
Very intriguing how the smokiness and apparent vanilla ?oak comes about if this was produced as it is.
Probably just entered into drinking window. Nice with a decant. Will continue to open up more over the next 5+ years. (3079 views)
 Tasted by k H i L o on 12/6/2015 & rated 90 points: A ouvrir 2 heures avant consommation. (2332 views)
Tasted by BordeauxBuff on 1/6/2014 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 3 hours. Still very backwards and tannic. Not as complex as other Chapoutier CDP's I've encountered.

I will not be touching my next bottle for at least 3 more years. Has a very long life ahead of it. (3586 views)
 Tasted by Bordeauxman on 8/25/2013 & rated 93 points: * (3231 views)
Tasted by Wine_lvr on 6/10/2013 & rated 92 points: Blind: Pop and pour. Intensive clear red. Berry nose with hints of minerals. Elegant but still deep and long in the finish. Great wine (2781 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 3/2/2013 & rated 93 points: No formal note, great acidity and mouthfeel, medium red fruits, spices and very solid wine. (1900 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 12/12/2008 & rated 93 points: Decanted in bottle from 8am til 6pm. First opened it was tight and frankly not that great. However after the decant it was extremely well balanced with classic CDP flavors, however the nose was still somewhat closed. The silky texture after 10 hours tells me that this will be drinking well after 10 years. Really good for the initial value. (3546 views)
Tasted by Jozefs on 4/11/2008 & rated 93 points: Phew... this is tight... but promising. Good balance, good material, a bit wild, enough oak certainly, but the fruit is also there, as is the refreshing acidity, plus a hint of the stable. It remained fairly closed in the course of several days, without no loss of focus or material. In need of several years of bottle age. (2868 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/23/2008: Fairly light color. Vegetal, tobacco, tapenade, violet aromatics. Elegant feel, grows in sweetness and volume over time. All about complexity rather than power. This is lovely and will be early maturing. (2960 views)

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
