Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 46 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wabi47 on 6/25/2022: light gold; faded pear and quince, slate, and a trace of oxidative nuttiness (889 views)
Tasted by srh on 8/31/2018: Friday Tasting Group; LOOKS Unthemed, but... (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Planted to 53% S.B., 32% Semillon, & 15% Muscadelle; Typically, vinified in s/s vats of varying sizes, malolactic fermentation taking place in a combination of 30% FR oak barrels & 70% tanks. "Aged 12-15 mos in an average of 70% new, FR oak barrels."

N: Oxidation**, though being inexperienced in dry Bordeaux whites (& NEVER having had one with > than a couple of yrs of age on it), I was tolerant of the oxidation, even finding a certain attractiveness to it

P: LM body; RNDISH entry with ALMOST swtish oak/"frt" adequately balanced by an acidity which morphs into a LONG, tangy/swt finish with either an earthiness or (likely) the oxidation coming through. UNDOUBTEDLY "better" SOMETIME in the past, though I enjoyed it for what it was. My VG+. 91 pts RJonWine (2x), 15/20 Jancis Robinson (who questioned its ageability), and 15.5/20 Gault & Millau.

Tasted by guillaume.bacuvier@gmail.com on 6/8/2016 flawed bottle: Caution, all my bottles of this wine which I have opened over the last 3 months were oxidized and definitely past their drinking date (4477 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/27/2016: This way exceeded my expectations, as I've rarely been an LB blanc fan. Apple, grapefruit and lemon peel, with nice flavors and textural interest. I might have to give this wine another try or two. (4938 views)
Tasted by mike l. on 2/2/2015 & rated 90 points: this was too young and primary. the oak and structure were prevalent. the fruit was awkward.

hold for 2-5 years. (5864 views)
Tasted by megropolis on 10/8/2014: Badly oxidized. (5713 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 3/9/2014 & rated 88 points: Similar to the last bottle, but less noticeable lemon note. (5675 views)
Tasted by BOWAround on 2/19/2014 & rated 92 points: Drank at Sepia Restaurant, Chicago, Il. Tasted twice (2/12/14 & 2/19/14) with consistent notes.

Beautiful wine that is really peaking now (but many years left), carmel/honey/hint of minerality notes really accentuated the sweetness of the scallop, but enough crispiness/acidity to cut the richness/salinity of the blood sausage/scallop this wine was paired with. Light yellow w/ green hints on color, not concentrated. Stone fruit bouquet on the nose... hints of green apple/green papaya/pineapple/stone fruits/nuttiness (nuttiness likely from 10% Muscadelle) on the palate... overall an underrated white Bordeaux... (3938 views)
Tasted by mwanasheria on 12/14/2013 & rated 90 points: Very nice mine reality, tropical fruit, grapefruit, nice bitterness. (3827 views)
Tasted by paulst on 6/9/2013 & rated 90 points: Supple; nice structure; flowered; minerally with decent acidity. (3764 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 4/18/2013 & rated 93 points: I find this to be quite beautiful. SO elegant and refined. Not so much concentration, but then it wins with its finesse and its long finish. Creme brueel and honey notes. Light on its feet at first but with a surprising and welcome intensity on the finish. Really lovely - a welcome change from the big California Chardonnay's I'm used to. (3511 views)
Tasted by P&F on 4/17/2013 & rated 92 points: Nose of asparagus and Meyer lemon, really lovely. Minerally too. I agree with Rand: that's it's difficult to pin down a taste of specific fruits or flowers or anything like that - but it's crisp, clean, and fine. Reminds me a Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards white, and being from France, is almost twice the price of that. Finish is light but persistent. There are no rough edges on this, and despite others' notes, I fell like this still has a couple of years in it. (2727 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 12/4/2012 & rated 88 points: Drank over 3 hours. Nose of lemon, honey and a bit of mineral. Palate was nice but lacking acidity. This really tasted like lemon squares my mother used to make. Pleasant but drink soon. (3222 views)
Tasted by wickedwax on 11/12/2012: Aromas of lemon, beeswax and honey with a touch of vanilla. Decent acid left in it, but one could hope for more. Seems rather further on in development than would would expect. Good length. I'm not sure if this will improve much more or hold for awhile, but I would be inclined to drink this soon. (2925 views)
Tasted by vendange on 6/21/2012 & rated 88 points: Rich with beeswax, fig, and notes from oak. But lacking the rich fruit of its youth and low in acid. Drink now. (3244 views)
Tasted by paulst on 6/13/2012 & rated 87 points: Very mature; golden color; waxy, ripe and fruity; herbaceous. (3175 views)
Tasted by paulst on 3/30/2012 & rated 89 points: Waxy; slight vanilla with acidic earth; round and a bit unvibrant; but long lemon curd and light vanilla finish. (3456 views)
Tasted by paulst on 7/2/2011 & rated 89 points: Musty earthy herbaceous and with sweetness lemon-curd with round creamy backdrop and minerally texture. (4654 views)
Tasted by paulst on 6/3/2011 & rated 90 points: Textured oily composition; musky and honeyed; lemon and sweet lemon; silky; nice finish. (4736 views)
Tasted by EGunderson on 5/29/2011 flawed bottle: Horribly skunked, my track record w/white bordeaux continues to be about 50/50. (4649 views)
Tasted by Hazeo on 5/21/2011 & rated 92 points: This was quite a lovely surprise. Young with strong lemon and tropical scent but ready to go. Good medium-bodied weight, great mouthfeel without being overbearing, with a hint of oily/wax texture while remaining crisp. (4614 views)
Tasted by Kirk Grant on 5/20/2011 & rated 93 points: Color: Canary yellow
Smell: Floral, honey, pineapple, Asian pear, and other delicate scents that are hard to identify.
Taste: Asian pear, honey, white tea, mineral, kiwi, and hints of citrus
Overall: A delicate and elegant style that was just my style. It has transitioned into a medium bodied wine with med acid, med fruit, and a finish that lingers on the palate for a minute or more. I would gladly buy this again...and wish that I had more. (4707 views)
Tasted by CellarBord on 5/15/2011: The 45% Semillon added a light sweetness that went well with the Jonah crab and Upland cress salad. (4469 views)
Tasted by paulst on 5/10/2011 & rated 89 points: Petrol earthy nose; some apricot and lemony peach. (4339 views)
Tasted by vinole on 5/5/2011 & rated 91 points: S FL WS Group Welcomes wine + art (Himmarshee's - Ft. Lauderdale, FL): A creamy and oily texture at the entry made me think Semillon was the larger component, but w+a indicated that is usually only about 25% of the blend, with SB being a much larger component. Light pear and citrus fruit, plenty of minerality on the long finish. Others liked even more than I. (5105 views)

Vineyard map

BACKGROUND: The wine of Château Lynch-Bages is part of the lineage of the great Pauillac wines. Blended mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines structure and finesse, elegance and longevity. It is further distinguished by its opulence. Generous right from its youth, it develops more flavours and greater complexity as it matures.

The affirmation of the Lynch-Bages style came with the arrival of Jean-Charles Cazes to head the estate in 1934. An innovative winemaker, emblematic of a new generation of owners willing to break with tradition and taking risks to ensure truly ripe harvests, he was known for often being the last to harvest in Pauillac. From 1945 onwards, the fame of the château emerged thanks to a series of great vintages. Some, despite being considered difficult to grow in Bordeaux, are particularly successful at Lynch-Bages. His wines are characterized by their deep colour, their tannic structure, their controlled concentration and elegant sensuality. The vintages vinified by André Cazes, and after him Jean-Michel Cazes, confirm this trend.

The style of the wines has refined over the years, gaining suppleness and softness, whilst their consistency has been established over time. Then as now, Château Lynch-Bages has been characterised by its extraordinary qualitative homogeneity. Powerful, elegant and open, vintage after vintage, the wine has acquired greater accuracy, adding distinction to the hedonistic character that made its reputation.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
