Tasted by roasted hill on 11/24/2023: Decanted an hour. garnet with minimal bricking and moderate legs. Black cherry nose with garrigue. Dark fruit with leather, fennel, a hint of prune, and dusty herbs in the long finish. Proved to be a great QPR.... (165 views)
Tasted by KL1975 on 8/5/2023 flawed bottle: Corked. Second bottle from this producer, both flawed… (334 views)
Tasted by MBannon on 10/15/2022 & rated 95 points: Popped and poured. Delicious. Good fruit, mellow tannins, very smooth. Wish I had more! (714 views)
Tasted by KL1975 on 11/27/2021 & rated 89 points: Not really convincing, alcohol very dominant, bad bottle? Better at cellar temperature (1019 views)
Tasted by gordoyflaca on 10/30/2021 & rated 93 points: Yum! (1060 views)
Tasted by roasted hill on 10/22/2021: decanted an hour. garnet with moderate legs. red berry and violet nose with garrigue. juniper and red berry as well as leather and spice with a long finish that complements the fruit. (970 views)
Tasted by thalver on 3/6/2021 flawed bottle: corked....this wine has really showed well in the past, and I pulled my last bottle as a treat this not. Alas.....CORKED (1214 views)
Tasted by roasted hill on 6/28/2020: well, i don't know about the last bottle. this one is far more consistent with the january 2019 notes. this wine is simply singing right now--all the way through a long, light finish. (1349 views)
Tasted by roasted hill on 5/17/2020: decanted an hour. garnet with minimal bricking and moderate legs. black cherry nose with garrigue. darker fruit than prior notes suggest with leather, fennel, and dusty herbs in the finish. still evolving, perfectly stored.... (1246 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 12/22/2019: Limited notes.... last bottle. (1364 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 4/8/2019 & rated 94 points: Big, powerful dark fruits w hints of chocolate and licorice. Drink over next 3-5 years. (1670 views)
Tasted by roasted hill on 1/1/2019: decanted an hour. garnet with minimal bricking and moderate legs. red berry and violet nose with garrigue. red fruit and red berry as well as leather and spice through an ethereal finish. drinking really will, with years left, i suspect. (1523 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 5/19/2018: Ruby without development. Strong black cherry scents. Firm, medium weight, dark red fruit, pine, solid tannins. Bold but not overbearing. This just feels like old time Chateauneuf. Not yet completely unwound. Love the classic structure and discretion of the 2005's. (2090 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 5/1/2018 & rated 92 points: White pepper, hint of licorice, drinking nicely but has another several years left. (1746 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/19/2018: Ruby with slight fading. A bit of brett and blue more than dark red fruit. Medium weight, chewy feel, excellent fruit, spice, a whiff of garrigue, and pliant tannins at this point. The flavor profile speaks of a good dose of Mourvedre in the blend. Really delicious, traditional Chateauneuf that has been a model of consistency for the past 3+ years. I don't see any reason that it shouldn't continue to please for another 5 years or so. Based on my recent experience, if you are inclined to hold your southern Rhônes, these 2005 Chateauneufs may be the best structured wines of the decade for reasonably long aging. (1909 views)
Tasted by pablopilot on 1/29/2018 & rated 93 points: I wasn't expecting much, but this is a really friendly, loving bottle of CDP! Drank with roast chicken. All red wines should be tasted, at least once, with roast chicken; it is the perfect baseline flavor profile. Very soft mouthfeel, tannins have melted away, little hints of raspberry and saddle leather, slight menthol/eucolyptus, like a california cab without the bombast. In fact, this wine as in such nice balance, with so little need to call attention to itself, that it would be easy to underrate. But I don't. Probably at its peak now, and maybe for another decade or so. (1912 views)
Tasted by roasted hill on 1/2/2018: decanted an hour. orangish red with moderate legs. nose of garrique, and red cherry. red fruit, black tea, pepper, and red berry run through to the moderate finish. tannins are integrated. (1523 views)
Tasted by ctjared on 8/24/2017: less prune. classic (1583 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 7/28/2017 & rated 92 points: White pepper, cherries, slight garrique. Drink now or over 5 yrs, serve at cellar temp not room temp. (1716 views)
Tasted by ljl203 on 3/25/2017 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. Baby powder, garlic, soy, bitter almonds, plum, pepper. Lots going on, but finish is shorter. Better with food. (2022 views)
Tasted by thalver on 5/1/2016: Another great bottle of this. Upon opening the nose was immediately expressive. Perhaps a bit thin on the mid palate, but with a sneaky, subtle finish that creeps in and lasts forever. After about 3 hours open, the tannins came to the fore, and it was less friendly (2715 views)
Tasted by ljl203 on 4/16/2016 & rated 92 points: Fantastic! Red-orange color, honey-eyed blend of strawberry cherry, powdery gum, well integrated tannins, lemon drop acid. Multi-dimensional, long finish. (2596 views)
Tasted by prism on 4/11/2016 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured; served with appetizers and eventually lamb meatballs. Lovely CnP; solidly in its drinking window. No formal notes, but all found this delicious. (1378 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 9/1/2015: Garnet color. Wonderful mix of tobacco leaf, blueberry, and herb. Medium weight. Dry, savory flavors of blue and black fruit and bark. Some welcome austerity and reserve at the back end thanks to excellent acidity and minerality. Very satisfying traditionally made Chateauneuf-neither overripe nor encumbered by wood. Potential to improve for several years, but I liked it right where it was tonight. (2790 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 1/23/2015: For the true Chateauneuf du Pape lover. Traditional with spice, garrique, black pepper, dark fruit, and plenty of tannins. (2700 views)

Producer website - Read more about Domaine Monpertuis Paul Jeune

The Domaine de Monpertuis has been in the hands of the Jeune family for several generations. Paul Jeune is now the proprietor of the 5 hectares of vines that are spread amongst 32 separate parcels throughout the confines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
