Tasted by Dugis on 3/6/2023 & rated 81 points: Some fruity flavors, but not much happening here. Very soft. This may have been a bad bottle (513 views)
Tasted by RieslingFanatic on 1/29/2023 & rated 89 points: Lovely wine, if you like the style. Decaying rose petals, leather, strawberries and assorted other red berries. Acid prominent on the finish, tannins integrated. Easy drinking, but with a sneaky complexity. (606 views)
Tasted by ppandian on 9/26/2021 & rated 89 points: Cherry, baking spices on the nose. Integrated tannins, good grip on the palate, a hint of salinity and well balanced. Good QPR. (1669 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 10/28/2020 & rated 88 points: Still really good but a bit more tannic than my previous. (3210 views)
Tasted by cuffthis on 10/22/2020 & rated 88 points: Consistent with previous bottles. My go to everyday red. (1983 views)
Tasted by cuffthis on 10/12/2020 & rated 88 points: Consistent with previous bottles. My go to everyday red. (1678 views)
Tasted by Redback on 9/27/2020: Very easy drinking! (2401 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 9/10/2020 & rated 89 points: Very pretty wine here from Vajra. Pours light ruby. Could be mistaken for a Nebbiolo in the glass (maybe just a hair darker than a typiccal traditional nebbiolo). The nose wafts expressive mixed berry fruit, with lovely floral markers; violet and rose, with just a whip of orange zest. The palate is medium plus in acid and tannin, also fairly nebbiolo like. Generally I don't love barbera and dolcetto, but in this blend they work quite nicely for me. (2437 views)
Tasted by LaiJien on 8/7/2020 & rated 89 points: Medium ruby – plush nose of black plum, crushed rock, earth, spices, star anise, cinnamon, and sweet, ripe dark cherry. Medium+ acid, medium tannins, 13.5% ABV, medium body, medium finish. Delicious and well-paired with Frittata Affogata alle Lasagne with Marcella Hazan’s Tomato Sauce.

Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera, blended with small quantities of Albarossa, Freisa and Pinot Noir. (1454 views)
Tasted by cuffthis on 7/19/2020 & rated 88 points: Consistent with previous bottles. My go to everyday red. (1238 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 7/5/2020 & rated 91 points: This wine makes an incredibly strong case for blending Barbera and Dolcetto vs. bottling the single varietal. This has evolved into a very fun wine with plenty of depth and character for only $15. The fruit sparkled tonight. A superb value. Perhaps Piedmont's only version of Cote Du Rhone from one its best producers. A blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and the rare heirloom Freisa and Albarossa. Aged mostly in stainless and some neutral oak. Can't help but love this! label says 13.5% but feels and drinks more like 12% alc. 91+ (1728 views)
Tasted by KVM on 5/17/2020: Fruity, concentrated. Some nuance; it's a more than passable vino di tavola. (1682 views)
Tasted by Buff Tannen, USXFel Presidente on 5/14/2020 & rated 87 points: A little more roasted herbs, a little less exuberant sour cherry than the '16? Tasty, QPR, etc... Last 3rd of this bottle spent a few days in a decanter, and what it lost in respectable construction, it gained in pure cherry vanilla guzzling pleasure (1413 views)
Tasted by vlzat on 5/11/2020 & rated 89 points: Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, Albarossa, Freisa and Pinot Noir

Medium body, bright garnet red. Red and black fruits aroma combined with very charm smoky notes. Dominant sour cherry palate and juicy finish. Basic wine but not so simple, well balanced and silky, refreshing acidity and soft tannins. Food friendly, best match is cheese ravioli. Serve 16º - 20º. Drink now while young and next couple years. (1867 views)
Tasted by ran.shoham on 4/22/2020 & rated 88 points: Simple, light, but very tasty, fresh with high acidity.
Great value for money. (1777 views)
Tasted by Dave Canada on 4/17/2020 & rated 89 points: Field blend of Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Freisa, Pinot Noir and Albarossa

Palate is is super food friendly with great acid.

Tasted by lifeattable on 3/17/2020 & rated 89 points: Slightly medicinal, but otherwise nicely balanced, typical. Decent buy. (1226 views)
Tasted by Motz on 3/13/2020 & rated 88 points: High energy, fruity, and fun! Polished substance throughout. Concentrated, not particularly complex, very smooth. (1559 views)
Tasted by SiR on 3/10/2020 & rated 89 points: 13.5% - Clear, med to deep purple / clean, med+ intensity - black fruit, bramble, liquorice, spice box, fresh tobacco, floral lift, earthy notes (damp earth) / dry, med refreshing acidity, med tannin, med body, med+ intensity, med length. This remains a fantastic Q/P year after year. (1111 views)

G.D. Vajra

Producer Website

The Vajra family has quietly amassed a serious collection of vineyards that make them one of Piedmont’s larger, family-owned estates, something they have accomplished while maintaining the already high level of their entry-level wines. Every wine in the range is absolutely delicious and full of personality. I can’t recommend these new releases highly enough. Antonio Galloni

2017 G.D. Vajra Langhe Rosso

Our Langhe Rosso is a hug from Piedmont. It’s an invitation to explore its different varieties and to get to know its personality. From young vineyards, it is a fruity, delicately complex wine - an ideal companion at the table. It’s predominately Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, with smaller quantities of Freisa, Albarossa, Pinot Noir. Each vineyard is harvested when it reaches perfect ripeness. The varieties are vinified one by one, to express their personality and uniqueness. The wine is aged for 18-24 months partially in steel and then in first-, second- and third-use pièces. - Giuseppe Vaira

Varja's Langhe Rosso is a blend of younger vine nebbiolo, barbera, dolcetto, fresia, albarossa, and pinot noir, meant to give an overview of Piemonte's Langhe region. This is sourced from various vineyards, each variety vinified separately, fermented in stainless and then into French barrels from new to three years in age, for two years. Lovely earthy raspberry, wild blackberry, pure plum, ample dried florals, and dried tobacco on a medium-bodied palate, textured via finely grippy/nubby tannins and lofted with a rise of gentle acidity. The finish is striated with fine spices, graphite, and salty minerality. Tastes like Langhe, perfectly; mission accomplished.

Aldo and Milena Vaira established G.D. Vajra in 1972 with some of the best vineyards in the Langhe. In total they own 25 hectares of vines with a further 10 hectares contracted for their production. They produce on average 100,000 bottles a year.

Aldo Vajra is a quiet man of few words but he and his wife Milena share an outsize enthusiasm for everything they do. Speaking of his philosophy Aldo says
“I try to make wines that give people joy. In the past wine was a food, it was necessary for sustenance. Today that is not the case, we choose to drink for pleasure. I want to make wines that bring people happiness.”

Aldo Vajra and his children aim to make wines that express the terroirs of their vineyards, which are located in the Vergne zone of Barolo. The wines reflect their maker’s highly individual and personal style, they exhibit great nuance, elegance, and understatement, just like the man himself.

Warm Regards and enjoy this wine,
Anthony D'Anna
